Good video, as always!! A funny thing about Conrad is I read Heart of Darkness by pure happenstance for a school project before I ever played Spec Ops: The Line. Not sure about Far Cry 3, but I think I had already played it prior. Anyway, I didn't like the book but loved both games (though I didn't love FC3 for its plot and I think very few people did). The build-up in the book was very interesting, if dogged by unnecessarily contrived sentences and a narrator who did more to take me out of the story than to get me into it (there was really no need to have Marlowe be this indirect narrator talking for in-book hours on end to some random guys who never interrupt him for whatever reason) but when it came to the pay-off of meeting Kurtz, I found that it just fell awfully flat. We only see him display brutality towards the Indigenous people he is lording over, implied by the impaled heads, and he barely says anything to Marlowe, yet Marlowe is somehow convinced that Kurtz is the greatest man to have ever lived. A similar issue plagues his other book, Lord Jim, in which the titular character abandons a literal boatload of unnamed innocent people to die, gets off scot-free, then gets to essentially be the patronising and semi-worshiped white guy in an Indigenous village. His tribal gf, the chieftain's daughter, doesn't even get a name. The two books have the same underlying issues: 1) they give no perspective or voice (and barely any basic respect) to the Indigenous people involved and only really uses them as plot devices for the story of the white invaders, and 2) it tells us quite explicitly to be baffled and amazed by men who, honestly, should be considered mediocre at absolute best by contemporary standards. I'm glad that later adaptations of his work go the extra mile(s) that Conrad wouldn't, in terms of criticising their main characters' actions. I don't know if you've heard of Edward Saïd. He was a pretty important figure in postcolonial analysis, especially of literature. He wrote his dissertation on Conrad and he describes Conrad well by saying he is anti-imperialist but imperialist at the same time, because on the one hand he exposes colonialism's monstrosity but on the other hand he only really seems to care about this monstrosity insofar as it affects the agents of colonialism and not the targets. (Here's a link on that if you're interested: culture.pl/en/article/edward-saids-reading-of-joseph-conrad) TL;DR My personal reading of Conrad is that he is essentially the precursor of the phenomenon that Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle summarised very well when he jokingly said that "not only will America come to your country and kill all your people, but (...) they'll come back, twenty years later, and make a movie about how killing your people made their soldiers feel sad," and that makes it very hard for me to appreciate him as an author. Also, his prose just bores me very often.
@FaceFullofEyes4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! On my first reading, I also though that the Themes river introduction with Marlow as a sitting Buddha was unnecessary, but later I grew to like it very much for the context and atmosphere it sets for the whole story. What I think he was trying to do with this is establish a more grounded framework of all of this being just a retold experience. And I think that if you return to the book and read those parts about Roman legions arriving at shores of Britannia, when it was itself a place of darkness, you'll find they are a great introduction to the tone and themes for the rest of the story. I believe that in the context of Conrad's times this story was deeply subversive to the whole legacy of imperialism. Naturally, to us modern humans this still leaves a lot of room for criticism because of all the progress in the meantime. I'm familiar with the work of Said but I can't say I've studied it to the point of feeling comfortable at making a comment on it. But I think that every examination of Conrad's work has to take into account his pessimism, borderline nihilism, in his perception of not just human nature, but the phenomenon of life itself. And critics should pay close attention not to misinterpret his moodiness with a political stance on something. I find his work to be far more philosophical than political in every sense. I personally never saw him or his work as something that's supporting that whole machine of colonialism. I believe everyone is entitled to write about their own experience (since Heart of Darkness has autobiographical elements) just as the rest of the wold is entitled to their opinion and criticism. If any truth arises between the too, that's great.

Thanks a lot! Fuck, Xen never came to my mind while writing the script - that temple sequence is pretty similar to it in the sense that it completely changes the style for the duration of the mission. Glad to hear that!

I think the best description of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is “Action Comedy, Parody (of everything from the 80’s)”

The beginning music made me think of the soundtrack from Escape from New York.

Might seem a out of nowhere, but in addition to your frankly astonishingly well produced videos, I absolutely love the name of your channel and your little logo.

I've got to thank you for making this video. FC3: Blood dragon is one of my favorite video games of all time and I almost changed my mind because my friends kept saying the original far cry 3 was better but they never tried this. This isn't better than far cry 3 but I do believe it is more fun. And because it is more fun see you analyze just what about it is so fun and clicks so well made my day. Thanks kind sir.
