I’ve been taking upholstery classes since 2018. My main teacher is a master upholsterer. But the way classes are set up with students working on various projects, it’s not possible to get this kind of detailed overview instruction. (Instead it’s just happening in the moment step by step without a great deal of explanation which is ok except that my learning style requires this kind of overview) These videos are extremely helpful for me to review the steps of projects and to see the big picture. I'm hooked - can't wait to have a go. Is there a compressor and staple gun you'd recommend for a beginner? Which one do you use? What size staples?

I’m so sorry I missed your comment Gillian! I would go for the Bambi Silent compressor, it’s the one I use and it’s a good compressor. And I use Tacwise guns and they’re really reasonably priced and work great! For general upholstery I use 8mm-10mm staples and then for places like outside backs where you’ll be stapling into more than one fabric I use 12-14mm staples. Hope this helps 😊👍🏻

Hi Debbie! Thank you so much for watching, it’s really appreciated 😊👍🏻 I think you’ll struggle with an upholstery fabric with a standard machine - you could try but without a walking foot that helps to push the fabric through for you, it may be really difficult!

Hi Mika! Thank you for watching! Unless the springs are completely broken you should be able to tighten the springs with webbing. But this does depend on what kind of springs they are?

Hi Kathryn! Thank you so much for watching and for subscribing, it really means a lot! So a collar is a piece of fabric that you sew on (in the same fabric as you’re upholstering the chair in) to assist you around bends or corners and stops the fabrics gathering up. You usually put them on inside backs. Hi! So happy to find your channel!💙 Question: Ive a chair ‘similar’ to that, but 90s swivel ricker But much more plush on top & arms with the tufted buttons all on the ‘front’ backrest. Can I switch (remove) from extra plush pouffy stuff to something less plush, pouffy &/or leave out the tufted buttons? Just wondering if it’d be easier for me to handle with less poof around top & no buttons……it’s my first time doing a full piece-Never tried anything other than a simple seats on chairs & stools. Lastly, ☺️(sorry) - your ‘GRIPPER’…..was that the thing you sewed into fabric as a trim- piping!? I’ve seen rubber/plastic ones b4 but yours looked METAL & FLEXIBLE!? OR you referring to the long metal tool you used around same time, (looked like a metal file for filing chainsaws, As the ‘gripper’ mentioned? Thanks SO much If you’re actually able to respond; regardless, Great vid! 😍 please do more like this. A 90s button Tufted plush swivel rocker, perhaps! 😏

Sorry for the delayed reply, thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 😊 yes you can absolutely reupholster the inside back without buttons (and you’re right, it would be easier!) but you would need to replace the foam otherwise you’d see the holes in the foam once you put the new fabric on. If you're not removing the Staples but you're cutting through them, does it not leave sharp edges that would overtime perhaps damage the new fibres?

Hi there! No it cuts them clean at the wood so there’s no sharp edges when you run your hand over them. And if you do feel any, you can hammer them down. You also shouldn’t put fabric directly on to the wood, you’d have foam and dacron before the fabric.

I’ve never reupholstered anything in my life, but I’ve just claimed a beautiful wing backed chair for free. It needs reupholstering. Would you recommend I strip it first because I was planning to keep to old fabric underneath. Stripping it all away seems so brutal for a complete novice. Would doubling up on the fabric be awful?

Hi Julie - you can upholster over old fabric but I wouldn’t really recommend doing it. I find carefully stripping off the old fabric and using it as a template to copy on to the new fabric an easy way to make sure you have enough fabric and the right shapes for the furniture. My hands are sore from taking down 2 yes 2, I am Reupholstering 2 armchairs for my wife as a Christmas gift , she has hard it over many years from her grandma who left it to her . taking down is the worse I have done this before but this one is different , thank you for this.... the only thing I removed is the springs which I wont be putting back any ideas? again thanks for this

Hi there! Yea stripping down furniture is not easy - especially if it’s old furniture as they tend to be made with solid wood, which makes taking out staples a lot harder (but the furniture does last longer!!) Hi there! Sorry for the delayed reply. This fabric retails around £45 a metre and you’d need around 6 metres to cover. And then depending on whether you do it yourself or get an upholsterer to do the work will depend on their labour costs.

Does it matter if you do the inside arms or the seat first? Other videos show the seat first.

Hi there! 9 times out of 10 I do the seat last so you can staple off the inside arms and inside back without having any springs and foam etc in the way. However, it does depend on the design of the chair as sometimes you’re not able to do it this way.

Hi, just starting to reupholster a wing back chair. Did you use 4oz wadding for padding? When doing the back what do you sew the lining fabric onto? Lovely chair and fabric, does it come in dark navy? Although would it be a difficult design to do for a beginner?

Hi Sara! Yes I use 4oz wadding/ Dacron on this chair. So when you say the lining fabric, do you mean the inside back or the outside back? With the inside back, I used the lining to make a template to cut the collars to pull the inside back through without any puckering - the collars are made out of the fabric the chair is upholstered in. I don’t think I explained collars properly in this video but I have recently uploaded a video where I explain them more in-depth - I’ll leave the link to the video below if you wanted to have a look! This fabric does come in a navy and teal version - I wouldn’t say the fabric is an overly complicated design for a beginner...just try to keep the pattern central and straight.
