Son of the State of Georgia, occupied “Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late… It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision… It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties.” Maj. General Patrick R. Cleburne, CSA, January 1864 Deo Vindice

Hey, BirdDogg, you came through for me. Many thanks, my friend! My G-G-Grandafather, John McCall enlisted as a private with Company H, 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Wilcox County Rifles, on 20 May, 1861. He was promoted to 4th Corporal on 15 June, 1861 and to First Lieutenant on 2 December, 1864. John W. McCall saw action in the following engagements: Seven Days Battle; Gettysburg; The Wilderness; Spotsylvania Court House; and the Shendandoah Valley Campaign. My other G-G-Grandfather, Private John Melton, Bowen served in Co. K, 5th Texas Infantry. After the Texas units were losing so many men, Pvt. John Melton Bowen, a Georgian, was assigned to the 5th Texas Infantry (the bloody 5th). My G-G-G-Grandfather, Ezekiel Scaff, aged 51, enlisted in E Company 5149th REGIMENT GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA C. S. A. Another good slideshow. Couple of big names in there, particularly McLaws. Thank you for your work as always.
@BirdDogg2 ай бұрын
McLaws had a wild history in these parts. I reckon him and Longstreet had a bit of a disagreement over in Russellville. If I remember right it ended with Longstreet unsuccessfully trying to court marshal him. McLaws was true to the end though, fought Sherman all the way to the sea, and was one of the last to give up the fight in April of 1865.

@@BirdDogg Pete admitted later that it was poor judgement and they reconciled post war. McLaws even defended him against the Lost Causers. Personality conflict really hampered the Cause at various points imo. I like to imagine what would have happened if He had been given a corps command after TJ died🧐

I would like to see these photos cleaned up and colorized. Topaz Labs has such programs.
@BirdDogg2 ай бұрын
I at times have attempted using those programs with varying results, some great, some awful. It’s not the best at recognizing which color things should be. I use photoshop when I do colorization as it allows me to select the colors but is still an extremely time consuming process. Alas, perhaps when time allows, been working 16 hr days just to try and keep my head above water these days…
@ralphpezda65232 ай бұрын
@@BirdDogg The newer programs don't tell you this but here is how they work-------- You pick a photo and load it into the program on your computer. You must be internet connected. The program sends your photos, movies, etc., to the program maker. Their computer does the work with the latest upgrades, then sends it back to you using the program on your computer, not via email. Yes, some items do come out better than others but you always get the latest and greatest. If you do a lot they have subscription services at a cost to you. Since that is their everyday job, they do it better than you or I can.

I know Arkansas isn't mentioned much in the war but the Arkansans did fought at Gettysburg . Can you make a video of the Arkansans in the war?
@BirdDogg2 ай бұрын
There’s precious few Arkansas soldier photos but I’m a workin on it! 🫡
@SouthernStorm_612 ай бұрын
Arkansans fourth bravely in every battle they were involved in especially the battle of Pea Ridge. Reason why Arkansas didn't field large units was because the state was still unsettled by pioneers in 1861. The Comanche Nation was your next door neighbor to the West.

Pat Cleburne, one of the best division commanders of the war, was from Arkansas. Died leading his troops at Franklin, he and his horse riddled with Minnie balls. Held against Sherman at Tunnel Hill. Called The Stonewall of the West. A great man and general.
