Indeed it was, and you have to believe it because there were so many witnesses with so many details. One of the few times you could probably take the story to the bank. And what a story it is. Now as far as his other amazing feats, those are probably inflated.

I live in Springfield Mo and yea everybody who is from here knows that story. And like you mentioned there are markers on the square as to where they were standing. The old court house of then was razed and Heers Dept store was there till 1994ish. Now it's Apartments but what most people don't know is that maple park wasn't the original cemetery. The Springfield cemetery was a few blocks north on campbell st between state st and mt vernon st and south st and the graves were relocated (not sure of the relocation year(s)) to maple park and others for city expansion and decades later bones would still be accidentally unearthed as late as 1930 because not all the graves were marked so they didn't get moved. Just a little more to the story. good job on telling the story I enjoy hearing the back stories of your videos so thank you.

Excellent job telling this story. My family was from around the Springfield area. I grew up on a little horse farm at the edge of Republic. As the family oral history goes, my great-grandfather supposedly witnessed the Tutt-Bill shooting. He was around 12-13 years old and was in town with his father that day picking up supplies. They were on the N.E. side of the square. My grandfather would tell us kids the story & especially loved the part about everyone hearing only one shot. It was later learned Tutt had one empty chamber along with one spent cap, which means they both fired at exactly the same time. This fact, along with the 75-yard shot with a .36 caliber cap & ball revolver impressed the heck out of me, even as a kid. I have visited the Springfield Square many, many times as a kid and stood on the marker in the street where Bill stood. Especially as a kid, it seemed like an unbelievable distance over to the Heer's Building (in the 50's) where Tutt was standing. Once again, great job telling this piece of history.
@FacesoftheForgotten3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great note. Many people don’t realize how hard it is to obtain accuracy, even with a long barreled revolver. Any handgun is very difficult for long range shooting. And at 75 yards -is off the planet; hitting some thing the size of a Dixie cup.

Wild Bill is buried in Deadwood, SD. I was fortunate to visit Deadwood and Hickock’s grave as a teenager on a family vacation in the ‘60s. Unfortunately I have no pictures other than what I can remember of the site. As I recall it was on a steep hill, trees all around, near a well worn dirt path and nothing like any modern cemetery. It would be cool to visit it again though I’m sure it has changed in the decades since. Thanks for the stories and history lessons! I enjoy your videos and the walks through these cemeteries. It is interesting to see the markers for those who were here before us.

It was 1967 when 2 friends and me rode our bicycles to the downtown square in Springfield. They showed the markers where Hickock and Tutt stood during the shooting. When the city of Springfield decided to revitalize the downtown area , new sidewalks were to be poured cement and over the markers. Local historians raised hell and the markers were raised to the level of the new walkways. Back in the 60s-70s', Tutts gravestone was simply a slab of limestone with the name D Tutt . With the exception of local historians, not many locals knew how to locate it. The details of the shooting varied greatly, depending on whose version one listened to or read. Some people said ,Hickock shot Tutt with a 36 caliber Remington army pistol. Others say the pistol was a 44 Colt . I have both and have gotten a deep appreciation of just how accurate the 36 caliber truly is . Some historians say, Hickock preferred the 36. Thanks for your video and research.
@alexandersupertramp10953 жыл бұрын
Great storytelling! I've always been fascinated with the Old West and outlaws and gunfighters. Another fact is the gunfight between Hickock and Tutt is the only recorded fast draw duel in the old west. Most gunfights back then were mostly ambushes and surprise attack. Hollywood and the legend of Wild Bill Hickock perpetrated the myth of the man to man, face to face quick draw gunfight that you see in a lot of Westerns.

Yeah and the wild thing is ..wild Bill was shooting a cap and ball… 36 navy pistol ..black powder …they had a bead front sight and a slot cut in the hammer for rear sight…. Thanks awesome video buddy…
@paulrickson97963 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I was surprised to learn how popular the 1850 Navy Colts were back in those days as well. Again, a black powder cap-and-ball pistol. Always intrigued me, those black powder pistols. The "in between" technology, post-flintlock and pre-cartridge. Loading the cylinder like six (well, five with an empty as a "safety") black powder rifle barrels and ramming the balls and powder home with the built-in ramrod on the piston barrel. And the smoke! So much fun! :)
