That purple star has a lock of hair from the person that is buried in that grave. This was actually a popular custom at the turn of the century to keep a lock of hair. I have a lock of hair from my great great grandma that was passed down to me. She passed in the 1880’s.

mine disasters are particularly sad and interesting as they never know if there are survivors. another interesting recent mine disaster story is Pike River in New Zealand. 29 men's bodies are still sealed into the mine it was a total safety disaster. very sad but worth a search

In the first cemetery there are a couple of rows where these victims were buried side by side by side. Wondered if you did not see that. Also, there is a little museum dedicated to those that passed. My cousin is the person who runs it and it would be quite interesting if you would chat with her. I grew up not far from there. Thank you for covering this disaster.

My great grandfather (Joseph Rodonis) was one of the miners killed in the Cherry Mine Disaster. He was a Lithuanian immigrant trying to make a better life for his wife and four young children - one was my grandma, who was 6 years old at the time. If you live in IL or are interested in mine history, I highly recommend a trip to Cherry. The people are friendly and keep the history of the mine disaster alive. There’s a museum/library filled with artifacts and a miniature replica of the mine. There are good books to read: “Trapped” by Karen Tintori, one by Jim Riddings and another by Steve Stout. I will do my best to make sure the memory of all who died in the mine that day don’t become a part of forgotten history. Thanks for this great video.

Idea!! Maybe in the future you could sell little pocket flashlights with the inscription "faces of the forgotten" written on the side to encourage people to use these lights instead of touching/scrapping these headstones. Just a thought due to your educational knowledge of the damage other factors can do to these stone's. made me think of my family they came here and settled in southern illinois and were coal miners. my grandfather was killed in a coal mine in bush illinois near herron il. crushed between 2 coal cars in 1923. hes buried somewhere in one of those small southern il. cemetaries. thanks for the tour.

I agree Susan, a very interesting yet at the same time a sad story. Id never heard of the tragedy before this. Hearing the details of the working conditions i can only imagine how brutal it was. So many young ppl, kids really, losing their lives is heartbreakimg. And to think, these working conditions didnt just apply to here, so many other mines were very similar in this regard. Ron did a great job telling the story too, as he always does ! :)

My grandfather went into the coal mines of Iowa in 1909 at the age of eleven. He was quite clear with me when I was little that the work was VERY dangerous. Gas leaks, cave-ins and coal dust just to name a few things. It was also miserable work. Picks, shovels, chilly air and dim lighting conditions. Pretty much a Worker's Hell. But, grandpa stuck with it and became a partner in a coal mine sometime in the early 1930's. And he would take coal--free of charge--to the poor families in his region so they wouldn't freeze to death in the Iowa Winters. To the families who lost loved ones and friends in this disaster, my heart goes out to you. Mining is noble work. It still provides a vital source of energy in this country and I trust that grandpa is having a bucket of beer or two with the boys from the Cherry Mine.

My dad was born in 1903 and went to work in the coal mines in 1914 age 11. He worked the mines until 1942 when he went to work in a defense plant in Cleveland Ohio. He died of black lung in 1974.

I so love your storytelling. I learn something every single time you take us on a walk….my great grandfather worked in the Pageton mine in McDowell WV. He was hearing impaired, totally deaf. He used to take care of the mules in the coal mine they used to pull the carts. They did away with the mules and used electric coal carts. He couldn’t hear it a coal cart speeding toward him and someone grabbed him quickly away. They then put him to work in the company barber shop out of harms way. This story makes me cry.

This is common practice. My grandfather was a miner in England. When he wasn't able to work any more, the family were kicked out. Parents and six kids. They needed the house for the next family.

Beautiful statue/memorial to all those who lost their lives in that mining disaster. My great grandfather on my Mom's side worked in a coal mine in Alabama (Leeds Coal Mine) and the cave-in sirens went off frequently and everyone in the surrounding areas could hear it and they all felt their hearts sink because they didn't know if their loved one(s) were coming home or not after it sounded. My great grandmother finally convinced him they could survive elsewhere not working in a mine shaft. So, he finally gave it up and they picked up and started their lives over in Mississippi. That is how my ancesters wound up in MS on my Mom's side. He suffered from black lung and lost a lot of lung capacity from the time he worked in the mine. Life was so hard in the olden days.

I think that is part of the reason that the coal mines on the eastern side of Wyoming are open pit mines. They pose less risk in that sense.

Just a horrible experience so many had to go through just to feed their families, so many left wives, and children. We can only imagine what they went through to identify the dead. The owners of that mine should have been lined up, and shot, they knew those poor people would work, no matter the conditions.

I respect and honor that Her father, and some his brothers joined the Army as soon as they was old enough My Greatgrandmother married at 13 had her first child my mothers father. He was the oldest there was 8 girls and 7 boys. That side of the family was large. There's 4 daughters still alive all in thier 90s. My last grear uncle passed this year He was the baby boy.in his 80s. I was blessed to know that side the other great grandfather my moms mothers father he was in his late 80s. My father came from a large family Most his brothers served in one branch or another. I was proud of my aunt sally she was the first female to join there she got her training to be a Rn. She's buried in Dayton ohio veterans cemetery. Her husband too .I've got cousins still joining the military. One Branch or another. I'm very proud. Here in Ga most Veterans get free burial, same with, fireman, police men.any one that has served or been killed in the line of Duty. That's a Beautiful thing to help the famlies. Espically if they died young and didn't have a lot of insurance. The funeral homes step.in provide service for free Reguardless They respect all races, religions I think more funeral.homes should do that There is a Goverment program going now that will help.with burial if you qualify . People who have no insurance, can apply now. That's for all seniors Just call your local social security office they can give you info That include people on SSI ssi and other programs Funerals are expensive. There is no shame asking for help. Hurry and apply now. Like with any other Goverment program. Once the funds are gone. The program will end That's for the lady who wanted to know. Yes that program is goi going on now. She can call Tuesday at her local Security office. Let them know her husband is terminally I'll They will be able to sign them up, before this program run out. God Bless all of you. Remember all that have served. Those that have passed and those still living Lot of our veterans are I'll need love and support. So I Honor memorial day for more than one reason For my mom who had a aneurysm. Passed in her sleep .they don't show up on scans. It can happen quick. My grandfather ended up with compensation for emphysema due to being a pit face worker from the National Coal Board, as it was known then in the UK. His lungs were just spent. He was so small in stature that the army turned him down for sign up in WWII and told him get in the mines. He actually wanted to go to war!! Where as my other grandfather, who was over 6ft wanted to go in the mines and he was made to go in RAF.

I lived in Cherry for the first eight years of my life. My Grandma lived there most of her life. I grew up with the knowledge of the Cherry mind disaster and Grandma had lots of postcard pics of that day. Some were donated to the library.

Very tragic but interesting history. I see child labor laws were not in effect yet as one of the mine victims was 14. I wonder if someone cold re-mount the one pic on the stone @ 20:00
