Brushy Bill Roberts attracted attention in the late 1940s and the 1950s by claiming to be Western outlaw Billy the Kid (who actually died in 1881). Roberts' claim was rejected by the governor of New Mexico, and subsequently his story has been repetitively debunked.
Despite the growing evidence that this man was a faker, the Hico, Texas Chamber of Commerce has capitalized on his claim by opening the "Billy the Kid Museum" in the historic Western section of their town.
Sadly, there will always be people that will try to rewrite history.

My husband’s grandfather briefly rode trail drive with Billy the Kid.. when he was just a young teenager..he asked to ride with them through Indian territory for safety.. he rode with them for about a week before he left them and rode on.. a few days later Pat Garrett came through asking about anyone coming through..it was about a month or so later they heard he’d been killed.. my husband found a record of this in the town he was born in .. as a kid he ( my husband)used to think his grandfather was making it up .. his grandfather was nearly 90 when he passed away in 1950.. he would have been 15-16 years old at the time..

@@theclown2393 My husband’s grandfather told him that Billy kept to himself, didn’t mingle with the rest of them and rode back .. he just up and left when they got out of the area where they were apt to have Indian troubles.. this was Texas and I believe they were driving them to New Mexico.. I’m in my 80’s now and my husband has passed away.. I might be wrong on that part, but, the rest is documented..My husband was born in Memphis,Texas.. he was 11- 12 when his grandfather died.. His grandparents weren’t able to have children but, when a doorstep baby was made available, they adopted him.. that was my husband’s father..they were in in their late 40’s when they adopted him..

Born and raised Texan here. I've never believed the Hico story as I'm sure most Texans don't either. Many years ago I visited a Billy the Kid Museum close to Ft. Sumner where they had some authentic funeral wagons and interesting stuff. The story I read then is what I truly believe and he is definitely buried at Ft. Sumner. Good story even though as a Texan it makes me mad too and never went to Hico for that reason. They do have a place there with good pie and chocolate. 😁

Hico, TX even has a Billy The Kid Festival and museum. Everything's bigger in Texas. Including the tale tells and tourist traps. Come to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, the birthplace of Pat Garret. His parents, siblings and their descendants, including a great-nephew who perished in World War II, are buried there.

I am still researching Brushy Bill's claims but I have seen enough lies from ''officials'' to make me NOT believe the record written by 'The House', ENEMIES of BTK and demostrable, pathological liars, word & oath-breakers. Example: “He is, in all, quite a handsome looking fellow.” That was the opinion of a newspaperman fortunate enough to obtain an interview with the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid inside a Las Vegas, New Mexico Territory, jail cell in late December 1880. The Kid, as described by the curious reporter, was five feet eight or nine inches tall, slightly built, and looked like a schoolboy. Instead of whiskers, the 21-year-old outlaw still had “silky fuzz” on his upper lip. And his eyes were a clear blue “with a roguish snap about them.” But Billy had a full beard six months later, when his skin was dyed brown?" Lol, add this to the litany of other 'official nonsense' and you have a situation where more research and(at this point) archeology is needed badly.

When you go to New Mexico... be sure to go to Lincoln... Then go see his 'real' grave! Lol.. I grew up with the Kid and all his stories... My mother was an educator and loved NM history... she had some great stories. Brushy Bill Roberts wasn't the only one who pretended to be The Kid. Very interesting! Great mysteries! You ought to do one about Herman Lehnman.He lived in Loyal Valley,Tx.He was kidnapped by native americans and spent much of his like with the Apaches and Commanches.He later did settle down in his home town.He used to give demenstrations of riding and other things.John Wesley Hardin and his family lived in RANCHO,Tx in Wilson County.Its a ghost town His wife Jane Asher is buried Mound Creek Cemetery.Hardin went later to eithet DelRio or El Paso where he died.

My family has a long history between Hamilton and Hico. I asked my Aunt Lois about this story in the 80's and was sternly told that he was not Billy the Kid. Aunt Lois was born in 1913 and Uncle Charly in 1903. They owned the property in Hico on the hill across from the park down to the Bosque and over to hwy. 281. I believe Aunt Lois. P.S. I am a Leeth.

I saw his real grave at fort Sumner in new Mexico museum that you have to go through to get into the walled cemetery, funny thing is a huge headstone (it has most of his gang buried there as well and has there names on the headstone) is now in a cage because it has been stolen several times and how anyone steals a one ton headstone is beyond me.

I did see a tin type pic on a news channel that a man had that did not have any province, however the detached ear lobes and facial recognition over laid the 2 photos and the nose was perfect and mouth and distance and slant of eyes all matched. It was not this brushy bill character but it seemed to be an older 30 ish picture tin type of Billy. The way he wore his hat slanted was even there. If you have not seen or heard of that maybe you could look into this. WYFF News 4 showed this and facial recognition said it was the same person when compared with original Billy the Kid tin type picture

Billy was born William Henry Roberts near Hico Texas. Brushy Bills name was William Henry Roberts and died in Hico Texas. Billy changed his last name to Bonney after his father (Henry Roberts) passed away. Bonney was his step mothers maiden name. William H Bonney is the name most people knew him by. Billy was an escape artist and I beleive Pat Garrett did not kill Billy. Brushy Bill knew too much to not be Billy. It is odd that there is a gap in the records of William Henry Roberts. Could it be because he changed his name to William H Bonney and then later changed back to William Roberts?

People never take the time to really investigate Brushy’s claim. When he lays it out there in the Alias Billy the Kid notes and book of Daniel Edwards it makes way more sense. Chano Silva, Jesus Silva’s grandson even says grandad said Billy went back to Indian territory to go after the men who killed his father. That was before the Lincoln county war and I believe right after he fled AZ because of the description of him being so young then by Silva.

LOL, I think it's funny that there's a noose on the monument. Even Billy Joel admitted that "The Ballad Of Billy The Kid" was all made-up because it fit musically: "To watch the hanging...of Billy The Kid..." Billy The Kid was shot. Billy Joel used that song as an allegory for his own life and took poetic license. It tickles me that people still take that stuff seriously.

Yes, normally I don’t do episodes that are worn out and done by other channels. But when I see that it’s been covered in a incomplete way - that’s why I wanted to do this one pretty bad. Set the record straight which no one else is really done on the cemetery front

100 percent agree. I have been to that gravesite as well as the New Mexico grave. Brushy Bill was not Billy the Kid in my humble opinion. I did a video on my channel about Brushy's account of his whole life. If true , he was the Forrest Gump of the old west. As always , great video

They say they have proof that the kid was born in 1861 and that they have a evidence that he was in old mexico after he was supposed to be killed for he was there that night but his friend billy was there with the kid and he is the one who got killed and the kid got shot in the shoulder and in my opinion billy the kid lived and got away and used some one else name what if brushy bill got killed some were and he used his name for i heard that they examination of brushy body he had all the scars that was said billy the kid was to have been shot just saying

@@FacesoftheForgotten Brushy Bill Roberts claimed he was born December 31, 1859, while the official date of Billy the Kid's birthday was Nov. 23, 1859. Not too far apart, but then has the official date really been proven to be his birthday? I don't know.

Billy the Kid was drawn into a life of crime by the events in his young, short life. Apparently, he had quite a personality as he was reportedly well liked by many, yet he gunned down at least three law enforcement personnel in his day. Regardless of some of the far-flung anecdotes, reasonable thinking historians are certain that he was shot dead by Pat Garrett in 1881. Billy the Kid was made famous by many novels and later movies over the years. I think that the fact that so many people believe that Billy the Kid laid low for nearly 70 years then suddenly emerged in Hico Texas looking more to be 70 than 90, stopping people on the street to tell them that he was Billy the Kid actually dishonors the memory of Billy the Kid. These same people that claim that Pat Garrett helped Billy the Kid to escape because he never got a photo made of Billy the Kid's body in 1881 claim that Brushy Bill Roberts' body had all of the scars that Billy the Kid supposedly had but there was no photo taken of them in 1950, even though cameras were much readily available by then. I wish that in 1948 a U.S. Marshal would have approached Brushy Bill when he was doddering around Hico claiming to be Billy the Kid and said: "Okay Bonney, you are under arrest, and I am taking you back to Lincoln County for execution of the Death Sentence for Murdering Sheriff Brady." and see if Brushy Bill would have changed his tune.
