As mentioned in my previous comment. The chief of staff basically portrays completed staff work. The chief of staff is a staff that anticipates and has everything ready for the president. Since the chief of staff is ready for everything it makes them indispensable and ready for everything ahead. Similar to ‘radar’ 'reilly or the get back coach, the chief of staff is able to manage the manager and help them make the best decisions that are needed. In this case the chief of staff is made up of multiple people which can be seen as a good thing because there are multiple ideas being thrown around until the best ideas are brought to the president in order to make a decision. Completed staff work is all about trust and making relationships, which is something that one can point out in completed staff work. During one point in the video we noticed a chief of staff walking with the president in the garden to be able to produce a better relationship and trust with one another. One can relate this to star trek, While nog is making relationships with everyone in order to make their boss look better. The chief of staff does all the work in order to make the president look better to the public.

This video helped me understand how completed staff work does not only get things done but also builds a stronger relationship between the manager and subordinate. The staff helps the manager know everything even if it is something that they would not like to hear. This builds trust between them because even if the staff member may say something that is not favorable, it is trusted because they are honest and know that they want what is best for the manager. With this relationship, the manager can trust their staff with more things even to reveal more of themselves, which is especially helpful within the communication. To be what is going on in one's life may help one understand why one behaves a certain way or if there are major life events. To have people you trust makes the work easier because you know that your team has your back. When your team needs to tell you difficult news, they will tell you, and you will listen because you know that they are doing it to keep you on track as a leader and manager.

This video did a great job at capturing the job of the chief of staff. One thing that really stuck out to me was the ability of the chief of staff to be so honest and blunt with the President. It is not easy to tell the leader of our country things they don't want to hear, but that is what makes the chief of staff so valuable as an individual. Not everyone has the ability to gain the trust of the president and guide him in making the right decisions. I also thought it was important how much time the chief of staff spends with the president. The chief of staff must be personable and get along with the president. They would go on walks and talk about the events that day presented, as well as what is to come tomorrow. Before watching this video, I did not realize the importance of the job of the chief of staff. Although, I now see how important having a right-hand man is. This person cannot just be anybody, rather someone who is trustworthy and honest, and who can can guide one in making the right decisions.

This video helped increase my knowledge about a person's role as a manager. It gave me an inside look at the presidency in specific. It showcased the importance and power of the Chief of Staff. It helped showcase why it is key for the president to give the Chief of Staff power and make him very relevant in his life. The role of manager goes far beyond decision making. It also is important that the manager is well versed in the skill of advisory. This is put on perfect display by The Chief of Staff. This is due to the fact that The Chief of Staff plays a critical role in advising the President of the United States. The Chief of Staff is in charge of telling the President the harsh reality's and other hard truths. That is why the President must hire a Chief of Staff that posses the ability to be open and fourth-coming with him, even in tough situations. In order for the President to hire the proper Chief or Staff, he must be self confident and level headed. I learned that in the video above. The ideal Chief of Staff must have the ability to make decisions without letting his ego affect his judgement. The relationship between the President and the Chief of Staff is applicable to all businesses. The manager should strive to have a similar relationship with his or her subordinates.

As said in the video, the president has to empower one person to be the chief of staff, the person appointed as the chief of staff makes them indispensable to the president. This is a foundation to a completed staff work because of the indispensability and anticipation that the chief of staff and completed staff work are able to have. Something that stood out was when they stated that the chief of staff has good temperament, this quality makes the chief of staff not afraid to be honest and speak out about issues. This relates to completed staff work because one must be able to be honest and not just be a yes-man. The role of the White House Chief of Staff epitomizes completed staff work. He or she is the voice of reason to the president. In completed staff work, a direct report has to manage their boss; the Chief of Staff is there to manage the president’s expectations and inform them of things that they may not want to hear but need to hear in order for them to make good decisions. In the video, they make it seem like the Chief of Staff simply brings the president problems, and while this is certainly a key part of the role, I am sure that whenever they bring a problem, they also bring alternative solutions for the president to consider. They also need to evaluate what is worth the president’s time. Being president of the United States is one of the busiest jobs a person can hold and your time is more valuable gold. The president does not have time to sit down and have a meeting about every little thing that comes up. As they said in the video, they need to act as a funnel to the president, making sure that the president’s time is managed effectively. This is another exercise in completed staff work because the Chief of Staff has to anticipate the president’s needs to help enable him to lead effectively.

This video is incredibly helpful in understanding the importance of the relationship between the boss and the staff member. The first example of this was when the men were discussing how important it was to understand the President that they are working with. The Chief of Staff must fully understand the thought process of the President that they work for, so that they can anticipate how the President will respond to any new information that they receive. Understanding the President also means that the Chief of Staff knows exactly what methods of communication are most effective for the President that they work with. Knowing this can help to speed up the process of effectively communicating important information. It is also important that the Chief of Staff is the sole person responsible for informing the President of important information. Having multiple people communicating different things allows for there to be gaps in communication. If the Chief of Staff is the go-to person, then it is ensured that all the necessary people are informed on important information. This also helps to ensure that the President makes important decisions within the timing that they are expected to. Having a Chief of Staff that is connected to the President allows the entire system to run smoothly.

After watching this video, I know understand the importance of anticipation, and what anticipation looks like in the workplace. As mentioned in the video, the Chief of Staff anticipates what the President needs, and uses his anticipation in order to construct how they communicate to him. For example, when delivering bad news, the Chief of Staff understands how to deliver this information and will often provide solutions to problems that they face. This is what Completed Staff Work looks like in the workplace. The main job of the President is to make decisions, so when the Chief of Staff is able to take care of smaller problems, it makes the job of the President a lot easier. Another takeaway that I had came from the daily walks that the Chief of Staff would take with the President. This was a perfect way for the Chief of Staff to recap the day for the President, as well as prepare him for the following day. This is a great way to make sure the President is never surprised, an important aspect of Completed Staff Work. If we can use some of these takeaways in our own professional life, we can make the job of our boss much easier.

It is often thought that the President is the ACTUAL chief of his staff, however, this segment clarifies why it is so essential to have a "check" underneath him. The Chief of Staff becomes one with the President because he is responsible for filtering the information that is meant for the President. The beauty of saying "No" comes from the fact that not every idea or solution presented is "the one." The staff actually has to go through many failed ideas. and propositions in order to present one that is most efficient. In Completed Staff Work, it is the job of the manager's subordinates to facilitate the the plan of action for the president. I think that the importance of Completed Staff Work is highlighted In this scenario rather than when looked at it from a business organization stand point. People must see their managers as their own "President." It is a common misconception that the manager has the answer to everything and that they act as the first point of contact whenever there is an issue. This video is very educational in terms of explaining the daily workings of the White House and how imfoirmation is transferred from advisors to the President. Specifically, it is interesting how the Chief of Staff’s role is very important. They are charged with being unbiased. Whats fascinating is that they are not supposed to cater to the President’s feelings/opinions. Instead, they are responsible for telling the president what he needs to hear and not what he wants. This allows for important and/or difficult information to be relayed to the Commander of Chief swiftly and efficiently. I also found it interesting how the Chief of Staff is considered the gatekeeper; meaning that he is the senior adviser in which all information goes through him. He is considered a linkage between all other cabinet members and the president. Therefore, this allows for all parties involved to report to one person without distorting/changing the information. It is understood that with multiple people being able to give orders or relaying information to the boss, there will be some kind of confusion of who is the leader or the messenger. Overall, the Chief of Staff seems to be a more difficult job in terms of anticipating what the president wants to know while also trying to keep him informed on the facts that he should know.

This video was very enlightening to me because it showed me how important the Chief of staff is. I was particularly struck by the idea that the chief of staff tells you a lot about a president. The chief of staff is such an important selection for the president that their choice can even make or break their presidency. They called the chief of staff the president's “reality therapist” which was interesting to me because this person doesn’t just help the president but they have to deliver bad news to the president or even keep the president in check. They need the ability to say no. They need to be cool calm and collected in times of great stress and they need to display great acts of temperance. This job is all about completed staff work, I would say that 95% of this job comes down to completed staff work and anticipation. The crazy thing about this job is that if you can manage your boss in this situation, you are one of the most powerful people in the world.

This video added to my perspective about a person’s job as manager. Looking specifically at the presidency, it is crucial for the manager to empower their Chief of Staff. The role of the manager goes beyond simply making decisions. It is also about enabling his staff to help the manager make the best decisions. In the presidency, the Chief of Staff is critical in telling the president the reality and truth of situations. They are not hired to just agree with everything the president has to say. If the president hires somebody without considering their willingness to be honest with them, they are setting themselves up for failure. To hire and empower a Chief of Staff in full effectiveness, the president must be level-headed and confident in themselves as mentioned in the video. This will allow them to actually consider what their Chief of Staff is saying to them and respond to it without their ego attached to that decision. While this video discusses this relationship in the situation of the presidency, this is also applicable to managers and their right-hand man in all organizations. Managers depend on their staff to keep them best informed and realistic in order to achieve the goals of the organization.

I absolutely love the distinction given about how people can come into the oval office and become “tongue-tied” about telling the president what he wants to hear, but not what he needs to know. A good Chief of Staff is one who can make this distinction with flawless execution and only need to bother the president with things that he needs to know. This is the key behind perfection Completed Staff Work in the government. The president is a busy person whose quality of work must be uninhibited because he represents the entire country, so any extra work that doesn’t need to be passed by him shouldn’t be passed by him. As Kennie speaks more about this, he makes it apparent that a proper Chief of Staff who can fit these criteria is one who “knows the man, knows what his goals are.” This is the essence of Completed Staff Work. Knowing one’s own manager without any doubts allows for flawless execution of “managing your manager,” and the end product of this is mutual success. Ronald Reagan trusted Kenneth Duberstein to enact his duties without error, and the fact that Kenneth knew this resulted in a successful presidency in the end.

This video taught me a lot about what a Chief of Staff does and how they can produce Completed Staff Work. To start, a Chief of Staff does this by executing the President’s agenda and by anticipating what needs to be done. A Chief of Staff also does this by telling the President things that he might not want to hear. For example, McDonough told Obama that HealthCare.gov wasn’t going to work. This was tough for him because he knew Obama wouldn’t be happy. A Chief of Staff also must be willing to tell the President “No.” To conclude, telling a President “No” is probably the most challenging part of being a Chief of Staff. The biggest thing I took from the video is that a Chief of Staff needs to control their temper. A Chief of Staff must avoid getting into arguments with the President and other members of the White House. A Chief of Staff needs to realize that some plans will fall through, and they need to be able to move on. A Chief of Staff who can’t control their emotions should be fired immediately. To conclude, every employee needs to be able to maintain their temper.

As a Chief of Staff, one has to be virtuous in their decision making and be honest with the President in their recommendations. The Chief of Staff must display courage in his/her interactions and conversations with the President as sometimes they may need to convey brutally honest statements regarding the President's plans. The video expressed how choosing the White House chief of staff is significant because it says a lot about a president, which also can be related to Completed Staff Work. After watching this video, you really get an idea of what life was like for a Chief of Staff. You soon understand their goals are to execute daily tasks and telling the president things that they do not want to hear. This is one of the most important positions in the work world that we see, a subordinate managing his manager. In this video, we find out the Chief of Staff is with the president more then the First Lady herself. They referred to themselves as "Gatekeepers" or "reality therapists." Another cool piece of information that I learned from this video that applies to life in general came from the Chief of Staff during the Reagan administration. He said that their goals often were accomplished when they originally accomplish 80% of their goal on a daily basis. Not pushing for too much and settling for what they can accomplish in the future. These "wing mans" are left with the task of informing the president of vital information that he may not want to hear.

The role of the Chief of Staff is to assist the President in all aspects. What was interesting to me was hearing how important the role was, especially in an exciting agenda and speaking from different points of view. Their job is very necessary. As the gatekeeper, they are guarding the Oval Office. This job cannot be split among people. There needs to be a senior partner. They need to deliver messages that no one else would want to. They stand their ground. They are committed to this role wholeheartedly and the White House could not function without them. A President could not function without them. This reminds me a lot of what we learn in class regarding Completed Staff Work. As the staffer, our roles are very similar to that of the Chief of Staff. We have to share recommendations with the manager, even if it might not be what they want to hear. We have to anticipate what work will come next. We have to look and have a big-picture mindset to help the company function. We have to make ourselves indispensable. A manager cannot function without their staff, just as a President could not function without the Chief of Staff.

Chiefs must act as the funnel that all recommendations move through in order to keep the most mess off the President’s desk. The “spokes of a wheel” method in which case staffers share power is not a viable option. “The Gatekeepers” author Chris Whipple explains that, in addition to setting up this structure for business to unfold, the chief of staff must possess the right temperament to effectively complete the job. This reminds me of the Nog and Radar O’Reilly lectures from previous weeks in how both second-in-commands had established familiarity and trust with their supervisor. Chiefs of staff must have the trust of the President and the shorthanded relationship to be able to communicate quickly and effectively. Denis McDonough manufactured this relationship with President Obama on their daily walks. This familiarity is what affords them the ability to say no when the time comes. Tell POTUS what he needs to know instead of what he wants to hear. Only through this intimate knowledge of one's boss - in this case, the President - can an employee - the chief of staff - anticipate where they’re going.

The Presidents Cheif of Staff demonstrates completed staff work in many ways. The most important from my perspective is being the President's right hand man and knowing everything about him. By understanding the President's family life, schedules, and many other personal details about the President, the Chief of Staff is able to get on top of the things that need to be done in a timely manner so that the President is always prepared. The strong relationship between the president and his cheif of staff is very important, becaue he needs to be able to trust him, that way he does not end up looking bad (getting set up with bad speeches, false reports). The video mentioned that the Cheif of staff was the person he talked to most other than his wife, which just proves the importance of having a strong relationship with your boss. Being able to anticipate his needs and assist him with speeches, press conferences, etc. the president will look good, which in his eyes make the cheif of staff look good. This was a good video to demonstrate completed staff work, as this is the ultimate job. It shows how even the president needs someone he can rely on, which tells us that our bosses will need someone to rely on, so we should be personable and prepared for the boss in our jobs.

It is very interesting to see just how committed the Chief of Staff was to be assisting the president. It was also interesting hearing the concept of how powerful the Chief of Staff really is and how it might intimidate the president. They truly serve their boss and look after their success. I can understand that when someone who works that close to their boss that is could certainly lead to a lot of tension and awkward conversations. In particular, when expressing bad news or difficult suggestions, it can lead to a lot of tension. This is a great example of how well-completed staff work can work. Even when things are hard to share or hard to express to their boss, the intention is to make sure they are performing the best that they can in their job. Without the help of the Chief of Staff using completed staff work to their advantage, there would be a lot more problems for the president in their duties. Decisions wouldn’t be completed or made using the best-known knowledge at the time. Providing areas for your boss to get promoted is one of the best things that can be done in a work environment for an employee because it means that values are taken seriously and integrity is giving to not only the staffer but also those they work with as well.

This video helped me understand the importance of a manager having a strong work relationship between himself or herself and their subordinates. If the manager develops a strong relationship with their subordinates then the employees will be able to anticipate what their boss needs. In order for a proper relationship to form the manager must be able to trust their subordinates and the employees must be deserving of the privilege. If employees can anticipate their boss they will be able to help the company as a whole run more efficiently and effectively. This directly relates to the video through the example of the Chief of Staff. It is important for the president to give the Chief of Staff power in order to expedite certain processes which would delay the President's important time if not taken care of.

The White House Chief of Staff is so important mainly because you have to tell the president what they don't want to hear. There are plenty of presidents in the past who did not understand how to appoint an equal within the oval office. These people have to be “grounded and comfortable within their own skin.” I had know idea the importance of a relationship between the President and the Chief of Staff until watching this video. They often bump heads and disagree with the President on a day to day basis. After a while I can see how that can become tiring and certainly stressful. Nonetheless, the job needs to get done and the staffer who fills that role must anticipate the maximum limit. I can only imagine the amount of tasks on the agenda for those working in the White House. The Chief of Staff is a very powerful position that comes with a workload like no other which is why it is so wildly considered to be one of the most important positions in terms of managing a staff. Completed staff work is at hand whenever there is an efficient team working for the best interest of each other and that is exactly what happens in the oval office. The Chief of Staff calls the shots and is the perfect boss to “manage your manager”, or president.

Many of the staffers emphasized the fact that they were the ones who told the President what he did not want to hear. These were the best staffers, opposed to the yes-men who told them everything he wanted to hear. The relationship formed between the staffers and the managers is paramount to a successful system of Completed Staff Work, as the staffer will be able to determine what the manager wants more easily with a clear understanding of the President, their personalities and their tendencies. It's imperative for the staffers to know the ins-and-outs of the President's daily tasks, as they eventually become responsible for completing so. From the video, the Chief of Staff is the ultimate boss's worker, because they sometimes complete the President's tasks, tell them the hard things the President does not want to hear, and they are responsible for developing skills that will allow them to adequately complete the President's job, if needed.

As a president's Chief of Staff, your role is crucial as you must anticipate the needs of the President and present them with information and tasks. The Chief of Staff presents the President with solutions to issues that arise and wait for their approval. The solutions presented must be in line with the President's thoughts and agenda as the Chief of Staff's duty is to serve the President. It is also important for the Chief of Staff to delegate and not overburden the President. Delegating tasks and duties to others in the White House will keep the operation running efficiently easing the President's job and still allowing everything to get done. The Chief of Staff must know what is of most importance to the President and assist them with that rather than presenting them with unnecessary information or items that don't need their attention. When you are doing Completed Staff Work with someone as busy and important as The President of the United States the most important thing is knowing what they need and presenting solutions for their issues. The last thing you want to do is be a burden or added stress as you are the "gatekeeper" holding the operation together.

The chief of staff has such an integral role in the government and is a main cog for the president because they are the gatekeepers and these keepers they make sure the president is getting a dose of reality and are being told what they need to hear not what they want to hear. The chief of staff is so important because they predict and must know the president’s next moves. They get to understand and know the president’s goals, so they play their role in accordance with the plan that the president has laid out. Ken Duberstein said Reagan was one of the best presidents because he understood that you can never fully have everyone or everything supporting you but finding a way to get that 80% and then working on ways to reach that last 20% is so crucial. And to me this sounds like completed staff work. Making sure that there is an extremely solid plan in place to counteract or at least in some way deal with the issues which will arise from said plan. Reagan knew that neither left or right will ever be fully satisfied so just working to get a majority was the best and smartest thing for him.

Completed staff work is about managing the manager and being able to anticipate any situation. The chief of staff position is important because they are the ones that have the temperament to get the agenda done by controlling the staff. Something interesting about the interview is when the chief of staff mentions how he is not afraid to talk to the president. He is not afraid to say no to the president and saying what needs to be said. As a worker, you should never be afraid to say no to your boss. You need to have the courage to give your boss the news he has to her even if you are going to give him the bad news. That is something the chief of staff does, he is not afraid to tell the president and the staff what needs to be done to execute the agenda.

Therefore it is logical that the president’s chief of staff uses the most efficient methods possible to achieve the president’s goals. Oftentimes, this means that the chief of staff has to make recommendations that the president does not want to hear. This is important to completed staff work because many of the best decisions are made with collaboration. In many ways, the chief of staff is a direct link from the president to the rest of the staff. This is a very significant role in completed staff work because the chief of staff can communicate the president’s desires to the staff as well as make recommendations to the president regarding the organization. Ultimately without the chief of staff, the president would have no link to their staff and limited control over both the cabinet and the country.

The paper covered a lot of ground that I found to be quite interesting. The section about the staff of the late former president, George H.W. Bush, truly caught my attention. In the Philippines, there was a rising uprising against the presidential palace. When the United States learned of this, a strategy was needed. The Chief of Staff at the time was John Sununu. The plan that John and the National Security Advisor came up with was thought to be the best line of action. All that was required was the president's blessing. This is a flawless example of finished staff work and a wonderful display of what it should look like.

As Chris Whipple mentions early on in the video, most Presidents learn early on in their Presidency that they cannot govern effectively without empowering the right person to be the White House Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff effectively operates the President schedule and tells the President what they do and do not want to hear. This does not mean leaving the President in the dark, but only determining what Is valuable enough for the Presidents’ time. As said in the video the Chief of Staff is the reality therapist for the President. Additionally, the President has to be careful about who he wants to be his Chief of Staff because he will spend the most time with that person outside of his wife. “The Chief of Staff tells him what he needs to know” this parallels what we learn in this course for Completed Staff Work. President Reagan was big on the fact of getting his 80%. The idea to get what you can and to go back for the 20% later. This reminds us that we're not going to please everyone, but as the Chief of Staff, we will be able to effectively get done what we need to get done and handle the rest in the near future.

Its interesting how across party lines so many elements of the position of chief of staff remain the same even if there are differences in leadership styles. It goes to show how important the position is to each and every administration. The chief of staff often spends more time with the president then the first lady does. In the case of Denis McDonough, he often took long walks with Obama around the white house discussing the days affairs. The relationship between the president and the chief of staff is critical because the president must be able to trust that the chief of staff isn't turning away important proposals and projects. If the chief of staff is cutting of the president from seeing projects that he needs to it can result in a disaster. It can also be a disaster should the chief of staff not cut enough out of the presidents workload. If to many projects are reaching the president of subpar quality things can be missed resulting potentially disaster disasters or at the very least a convoluted and unfocused term for the sitting president. If the concepts of completed staff work are applied the chief of staff will not only receive higher quality work but will be able to more effetely determine what the president needs to see and what can wait.

In this video, each Chief of Staff has a very good understanding of Completed Staff Work. While they may not explicitly say what Completed Staff work is, their jobs are exactly that. Part of Completed Staff Work is managing your manager. Each of these men describes how they managed their manager. Managing your manager or managing up is using your traits and talents to help the manager make decisions and completing day to day executions. In this case, the manager is the President of the United States. By communicating with the President necessary information, they are allowing them to make efficient and effective decisions. The Chief of Staff always has to deliver the tough information. This becomes easier as the relationship between the President and the Chief of Staff develops. Relationships that are built on honesty and trust allow for an easy and effective means of communication. Other people on staff may have fears to tell the president the truth about what is happening. In order for things to be fixed or for action to be taken, the president must know the truth. The Chief of Staff has one of the most important jobs in the White House. There are not many people that the president trusts like that Cheif of Staff.

He needs to be able to tell him what he needs to hear and what he needs to know. When people get the chance to talk to the president, they often tell the president what they want to hear and what will get them on board. The Chief of Staff needs to be able to tell the president all the necessary information, even if he is not going to like it. The Chief of Staff is meant to anticipate the needs of the president and be able to deliver and fulfill those needs. Staying ahead of the game is key to the success of the Chief of Staff. In terms of what the president needs to do regarding the Chief of Staff position is that he needs to empower his Chief of Staff to take on a senior leadership role. The Chief of Staff is someone the president spends a lot of time with. You can’t have eight or nine people in the president’s ear trying to tell him what the best option is. Having this quality will allow this person to ensure that ideas and plans are well thought out in advance, information is thorough and complete, and decisions are well-informed. Additionally, being composed allows this person to thrive in a stressful environment where lots of important and consequential decisions are being made. The other concept that the video discusses refers to the storming process of team formation. During team evolution, teams will form and go through a storming process where they fight to perform certain roles. When a chief of staff is not given the clear role to manage the flow of information, then this storming process will only continue through the administration, and the team will not progress to the norming stage. The president’s Chief of Staff, his right-hand man aside from the Vice President, perfectly exemplifies the execution and achievement of Completed Staff Work in The White House. They are given the nickname, “The Gatekeeper,” because they manage all of the internal procedures that are conducted in the White House as well the day-to-day schedule of the President through an effective system. The Chief of Staff demonstrates leadership by communicating the President’s goals to the rest of his administration and empowering the other staffers to meet them by carrying out their assigned responsibilities and compiling the required information to provide the President with a recommendation to make the appropriate decisions. However, they also exemplify followership by acknowledging the propositions of the other staff members and trusting that they will assist the President in achieving his mission for the country. As stated in the video, the Chief of Staff must be someone who has a strong temperament or the confidence to talk with the President as well as to maintain steady control over the system they established in the White House. Additionally, even though the Chief of Staff may think the President only wants to hear what he “wants” to hear, they must also have the courage to tell him what he does not want to hear or in other words, what he “needs” to hear from his staff. This demonstrates the “managing your manager” aspect of Completed Staff Work because while the President is the one who executes the decisions, his Chief of Staff, with the help of his staffers, is the one that anticipates what must be done and then prepares a proposal with relevant facts to support that solution, which will ultimately advise the Commander in Chief on the best plan of action he should implement, even if he originally opposed it. The President must trust and empower his Chief of Staff, and the Chief of Staff must not only trust the President but also have faith in himself and act in the best interest of the President as well as the country.

The Chief of Staff produces Completed Staff work in a multitude of different ways. Let's start with the job description of the President's Chief of Staff. The job description for the President's Chief of Staff is literally to manage the presidential staff. Therefore, it is imperative for the Chief of Staff to produce completed staff work. For if he doesn't, the consequences could be catastrophic. One way that the Chief of Staff produces completed staff work is through anticipation. Like the two former Chief of Staff's say in the interview, besides the first lady the chief of staff is the closest person to the president. Therefore, since he is with the president the most it is imperative that he is able to efficiently anticipate what is most important to the president and his administration. Another way in which the Chief of Staff produces completed staff work is by telling the president what he needs to know; not what he wants to hear. There is a very distinct difference. When the president is speaking with people, they will most likely be somewhat star-struck and try and tell the president exactly what he wants to hear. There is no room for this as the Chief of Staff. The president needs to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. And it is the Chief of Staff's responsibility not to sugar coat anything and give it to the president straight.

As said in the video it is so important for the president to give a great deal of power to the Chief of Staff and be seen as an equal to execute agendas while also telling president's what they do not want to hear. To be a successful Chief of Staff you need to be honest with your president. You must be transparent in order to make sure that things run smoothly, and everyone is on the same page. It was interesting to also hear about the walks that Obama took with his Chief of Staff after every day to talk about what had happened on that particular day as well is what must be anticipated for the near future. The Chief of Staff should also be seen as a gatekeeper to the president. It has been somewhat unsuccessful when the president has many points of contact. This can create poor communication which can lead to failure. Throughout this video the one word that kept crossing my mind was communication. The Chief of Staff must be able to communicate effectively and be the one point of contact with the president. The Chief of Staff needs to be able to relay messages to the president even if they are not good conversations, The Chief must be transparent with the president.

This ties into Completed Staff Work because it is crucial for there to be an individual who fields any possible solutions, opportunities or decisions through research done with the staff, prior to this information making it to the president. If there are too many individuals who have the ability to communicate with the president for final approval or decision making, it is possible for information to get lost in communication or for unfinished solutions to make it to the president by mistake. In order to have the ability to be the top individual reporting to the president and ensuring you are making he life easier; you must understand the president and how he analyzes and makes decisions. As the video stated, the Chief of Staff must have the right temperament--with this characteristic, it is expected to be able to think clearly and conduct important research in times of crisis where important choices must be quickly passed to the President. The White House Chief of Staff is a critical position plays an important role in the success of the presidency. The job of chief of staff consist of various elements that need to be sought consistently, i.e. administration, emergence, evolution and performance of the supporting office. The chief of staff needs to perform four major roles to produce the completed staff work are the role of administrator, guardian, advisor and proxy. With the role of the administrator, the chief of staff monitors the flow of the information and advice, as a guard, the chief helps the president to save his time and to be concentrated on important decision making. The Chief of staff needs to coordinate with the president as well as the members of the office. He holds the challenge of getting the work done by maintaining equality among the members by implementing the principle of inclusion and multiple advocacies in the office. Therefore, maintaining a balance between the flow of information to make valuable decisions and to coordinate that decision to the office in order to assure to make them implemented by allotting tasks to relevant members and subordinates.

Completed Staff Work is the study of a problem and the proposal of a solution, by an employee or colleague, in a way that the only thing that remains is the approval or disapproval of the decision makers. The chief of staff is a leader among those in the oval office. They work to organize the president's schedule and recognize what is important for the president to hear. They kind of act as a mediator between the president and the other members. There would be so much work for the president to get through, if the chief of staff wasn’t there to help regulate it. At the end of the day, the chief of staff has the goal of getting the job done efficiently. They are working towards that end goal.

It was interesting to watch how the past American Presidents’ Chiefs of Staff handled the huge responsibilities handed to them. The President spends the most time with their appointed Chief of Staff, more than his own wife, as one past Chief of Staff pointed out. The Chief of Staff influences a lot of the decisions that the President makes by filtering what items are on his desk each day. It is his duty to inform the President of pressing matters, both good and bad (but usually bad). The Chiefs of Staff mentioned that they needed to have a grounded temperament and not be afraid to tell the President exactly what he needs to know. They delivered bad news to the President every day. The Chiefs of Staff also have to be aware of the temperament of the President that they’re working for such as how they handle bad news, how they would like to be updated on important matters, and when to meet him to give him a “run down.” The Chief of Staff to former President Obama said that he and President Obama did a “wrap walk” at the end of each day where they would just walk around the garden and discuss what happened during the day and what has to be done the next day. Overall, the Chief of Staff has one of the most important jobs in the White House because he is the President’s right hand man.

Being the COS is not an easy job to do. The COS has to be the gate keeper of information to the president. This person needs to make decisions so that the president is only getting the information that is absolutely critical to the country. It is important to mention that the COS must deliver the good and the bad news to the president. They need to have a strong relationship that is build on the foundation of trust. It is also important to note how every president and COS operates. Every guy in the video had the same job but they all worked for different presidents and had different experiences. The COS also has to be good at delegating tasks to the staff of the white house with out the ability to do this things would not run smoothly. I think that this has to be one of the most difficult jobs for a person to have because there is always an imense amount of pressure on the COS and the president.

Additionally, this person may succeed in a demanding situation where numerous important and crucial judgements are being made by remaining composed. The formation of teams through teamstorming is the other subject discussed in the movie. Teams develop throughout team evolution and go through a storming process when they battle for certain roles. The team will not go to the norming stage if a chief of staff is not given a clear role in controlling the flow of information. Instead, the storming process will only continue through administration. The White House's upkeep is also greatly influenced by the chief of staff. This video is very helpful because it provides differing, yet direct advice on how to be a good aid to someone in a top role. In this case, we get the perspective of two people, who held the same position, as Chief of Staff. Though there is a significant age gap, and they hold different political views, both McDonough and Duberstein agree on the duties every Chief of Staff has. The most important point is they deliver news that needs to be said. It is not their job to sweet talk the President. They provide the hold, hard facts. I do agree with McDonough that it was strange how Trump had several people hold this position at the beginning. The Chief of Staff should only be one person, who is speaking directly to the President. That one person oversees everything.

The Chief of Staff for the President of the United States is possibly one of the most important jobs available in our government. The bond between a president and his chief of staff must be unbreakable, as the video said that the chief of staff is with the president almost as much as his wife. As stated in previous assignments, I described the chief of staff as a filter. This filter must know the president’s priorities politically, economically, and militarily. The President is unable to do everything, so some delegation is required. It never really occurred to me that such delegation is required in the executive branch of our government.

Seems like the chief of staff works something like a get back coach in many ways, a person hardly recognized by the broader public, who has the unfortunate job of keeping their own boss in line. This does not mean that they have the authority to boss the president around, or that the president will always listen to them, but they appear to be among other things the man who can speak freely and honestly with the president without fear of repercussion. More interesting is how it was emphasized that the chief of staff position and its responsibilities must be handled by a singular person rather than multiple, being ‘the senior partner’, more of a right hand to the president then even the vice president. It is hard to understand why the ultimate bearer of bad news is so important, but the individual with the most power is perhaps the one who most needs to hear what he does not want to, and there are few in a greater position of power then the president of the United States of America.

Obama’s Chief of Staff would take a walk with him at the end of the day to review what was done that day and what needs to be done the next day. This walk allowed them to build a strong relationship and anticipate what could happen next. The Chief of Staff builds a relationship with the President to anticipate their next move and enable the President to make decisions to reach his goals.

This is a great, great book. The best White House Chief of Staffs were James A Baker III, Leon Panetta and Denis McDonnough. The worst, Hamilton Jordan and John Sununu

In the White House, completed staff work is critically important and a Chief of Staff is necessary because they ensure that the agenda is consistently worked on in favor of the country. The chief of staff is also the "gatekeeper" to the President, and pretty much takes everything first and then decides what to pass on to the President upstairs. The chief of staff needs to be strong and know what is right for the President because they are the first person to tell the leader of the country, no. They must remain in the presidents mind and assume what he/she might do next because the chief of staff must keep the president in control. Reagan was named one of the best presidents because he would not nothings to win over 100% of the people because he knew that was not realistic. Instead, he would target the majority(80%), and from there he would work to reclaim the remaining 20%. This plan and understanding of the people truly demonstrates completed staff work because it will take multiple people and ideas to attack that plan successfully.

I thought it was very important that the number one goal of a President should be to empower their Chief of Staff as an equal who can effectively execute their agenda and tell the president things that they do not want to hear. First off, executing one's agenda would be impossible without having the Chief of Staff being treated on equal footing as the President. This is because the two need to work in tandem, more like a "Joe Montana and Jerry Rice" duo, rather than working as a "Batman and Robin" type duo. In this way, they can truly provide one another recommendations and criticism to allow the both of them to understand the agenda and how it is to be executed. Second, telling the president things that they may not want to hear is pivotal and the difference between a failed and successful presidency. However, this does not only go for presidency, but for any leadership position in the history of mankind. If a leader cannot accept criticism from their peers or employees, they will never be able to attain complete success, or, for the case of this course, completed staff work. It is essential to be able to correct one's mistakes and not be stubborn in order to get things done.

Completed staff work is very important in the White House and needs a chief of staff because they execute the administrative agenda and to tell the most powerful man in the world “no.” Oftentimes the reality of a situation can get lost because everyone is trying to get the president to warm up to him, but the chief of staff has to tell him the reality so the boss can make the most informed decisions. The Chief has to anticipate the president’s goals and needs. When making a decision, there needs to be a realization that you cannot get everyone to like your decisions, but to get what you can. The control of information must be controlled by one person for the boss or president in this case. This is because nothing will get done due to much information and opinions on the matter. There needs to be just one trusted man by the president to control the information flow and get him what he needs. Completed Staff work cannot be done with half-made proposals getting through and wasting the time of the president. It seemed like Bill Clinton ran into this problem when he would have a long meeting and get nothing done.

While watching the video, it outlines the significance of the Chief of Staff position. The job is important due to the fact that they are able to help the President by controlling their staff in order to execute their agenda. It is also important due to the fact that they tell the President things they may not want to hear. I find this rather interesting because many people in different positions do not like to hear things that do not align with their agenda, so having the Chief of Staff allows for there to be a form of balance and control. I also found it interesting that the Chief of Staff reveals a lot of the President because of the fact that they spend so much time together. I also found it interesting that they referred to the Chief of Staff position as the “reality therapist.” I found this interest ing because the position keeps the President grounded, meaning that they will allow for the President to keep their agenda realistic. I find that this is interesting because it allows for the President to know what needs to be done, and keeps everything in line with the President’s agenda.
