It’s scary because opening your mouth in front of thousands of people (any amount of people) is one of the most personal/vulnerable things people do - people from ALL races, countries, and religions. Every single one uses singing - music - as a part of their culture as part of their identity. It’s universal. Why do you think all religions incorporate singing in their worship? Because it’s deeply moving and you’re making yourself vulnerable by sharing part of you with others. Don’t mean to get all sappy LOL, but its the truth. But it’s totally normal!

Strangely, stage fright was never a problem. From my very first gig to my last, I loved it all, even my f**kups. Best memory was the night I literally blew my voice out singing my mom’s favorite Travis Tritt song with her watching. The only time she ever came to hear me play and sing. We were NOT a country band and we rocked the Hell outta that song. I miss playing live. It’s been 20 years. I’d jump on any stage without even a rehearsal just to get back on a stage. Embrace every fear and learn to love it, Rhett.

I’ve heard you speak openly about your insecurities in your abilities a few times. Just want to say man think of it this way. You are doing what so many of us wish, and dream we could do for a living. You should know the reason you’re there is, because you belong there. The rest of the KZbin community saw how incredibly talented you were almost immediately. Believe in yourself, cause you’ve got potential to just keep growing your career. You have the gifts, and you’ve put in the work. You’re willing to learn from musicians who are older with more experience. Your ceiling is unlimited. Your voice is great! This is coming from a singer/songwriter who used to be terrified to sing for people period, but when I finally started to show everyone what I could do people loved it. I only grew and got better as a vocalist the more confident I became in myself. You should just go out there and wail, and you would kill it! I promise people will let you know if you don’t kill it, but I guarantee you will. I just think you have unlimited potential as an artist, and the platform to really show the endless talent you have. Embrace it to it’s fullest, and explore its depths. Take advantage of it, Bc it doesn’t last forever. Cease those opportunities to their maximum. Take care.

The respect is building. It takes balls to do what you do, in the venues in which you do it. You put it out there. In places where, if you were to flame out, it would be a big freaking deal. I've travelled and played; it's clearly no walk in the park. The shows are great, but sometimes you're just too cortisoled-out to really be able to appreciate it, or even be present, in the true sense of the word - and I've never come _close_ to the level at which you've had to do it. Thanks for letting us ride along, and experience the thing alongside you. That's why you are successful. On top of everything else you have to consider; you manage to keep the phone out and recording. It really hit me when you were on the people-mover at the airport. Whoa. I would have binned the phone at the first opportunity. Cheers, from Bangkok.

No need to be nervous. Best thing you can do is to get a multitrack recording of the show and solo up your voice with the lead singer. This really helps, and when you get used to hearing your own voice (note - some people don't actually like hearing the sound of their singing voice because it's different to how you hear it) you can learn what works and what doesn't and boost your confidence.
@TheSkooterbords5 жыл бұрын
Wow man. Haven't thought of that. I've playing for years now but my predicament is different. Thanks man. I'mma do this from now on. Cheers from the Philippines.

Even thought we all know its not true, its easy to think that everyone on stage is "in their element" 100% and didn't have to push through a bunch of things to get their. I am a rhythm guitar player - always wanted to sing backup. Our bass player who used to sung backup quit, so now we have no one singing backup. At our last show I stepped up to the mic, sang a couple lines and then froze --- swing an miss. But now I am on a missions to make it happen, and it begins tonight at rehearsal - thanks for the inspiration, I will succeed!

Rhett, maybe you know this one: “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” It's fantastic that you overcame this and added it to your musicianship! It's pretty common for us, as instrumentalists, to be "encouraged" to help with backing vocals, especially harmonies, and occasionally also be "encouraged" (read: dragged kicking and screaming and trembling with fear) to take lead vocals on a song or three :) My experience has been that, the more I do it, the more I enjoy it, but also I know my limitations, as vocals can and do interfere with my playing, and playing my instruments always comes first with me.
