I'm an occasional viewer. I currently live on a sailboat, but spent many days and nights camping, backpacking and hiking. As you can imagine, I'm subscribed to a few sailing channels. Over the past four years, I've had to unsubscribe from quite a few because of their reviews of products. I really appreciate your no agenda and no politics approach. I also appreciate that you'll only review products on your terms and that you're not a sellout. You've just gained a new subscriber!

I have been very, very cold on sailing boats in my time ! When you find you can see light through a fibreglass hull when she heels away from you, you get it. Two sleeping bags and a tube blanket, take off outer clothing , dry seaboot socks, you might even stay warm. My deep condolences to the family of the young man that got it wrong.

The claim that he started the solo camp thing on youtube, I believe it. I remember my first video I ever saw about this kind of thing years back was Luke going out alone into the dark wilderness and I thought this is the craziest and kinda one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. KZbin has a lot of interesting content, but this is new. He set up lights that were kind of comforting to see as someone outside looking in, but he's still alone in the stinkin dark cold woods, and all the while I'm thinking what kind of lights are those. To this day the products he reviews and recommends are dialed. I'm happy he provides this content still.

I have always been taught you need to regulate the valve on self inflating mats. When you first buy it, unroll it and inflate it. Leave it a few hours. Then, open the valve and roll the mat slowly to force out the air. Once rolled up, close the valve. You have now created a vacuum inside the mat. The hardest bit is inflating it. You open the valve and unroll it slowly. As it unroll, the vacuum socks in the air. The trick is to match the vacuum speed with the roll speed. It just takes some practice. Great video again though

Luke, you make camping so effortlessly but only because of your years of experience and painstaking preparation. You are also extremely smart and know when to turn back; you've done that many times. Nature is beautiful but unforgiving.

You are completely right about nature punishing mistakes. I just want to say that there are still situations you cannot prepare for. Be as careful as you can and you will probably survive every scenario but preparing for the worst might not save you in extreme conditions. Sometimes you are just unlucky. Poor boy..

I've always included a survival blanket and extra layers for anyone that might be with me. We were going South from the NOC on the AT in the late '80's. The weather went from the 50's and cloudy to rain and then snow before coming out to our ride on HWY 72 in Hiwassee, GA. My hiking buddies got concerned. I encouraged them we had prepared in advance, and we could weather well. I had prepared a list of items to give hikers before taking them with me so they would know what to bring and how to pack. Sometimes our state of mind can overcome our preparations. Anyway, the last night I used up the fire ribbon because I felt we needed the distraction of having a good fire. As we sat around the campfire a friend recounted how he had prayed for the second evening camp site saying he couldn't make it another mile. When we got to the camp it was filled with drunks. My friend said the Lord said. "no buddy you can go another five miles". The next morning our ride took us back to River's End Restaurant for a much-enjoyed meal.

Talking about the young guy that died end the weird circumstances, I agree hypothermia was probably a factor. The fact that there was a fall where he broke his nose, it is also possible she had a head injury or a brain bleed. As a paramedic, i've seen some of these and they can take time to manifest. Either one of those factors alone is a recipe for disaster but combined. The poor guy probably didn't have a chance. Thanks for the content, you offer wealth of knowledge and information that I use now that I'm getting back into this stuff!

Luke, as much as I appreciate your integrity when it comes to product endorsement and honest reviews I think your style of camping differs from many. Not a bad thing just a different thing. Having the safety net of familiar terrain, a vehicle and an abundance of gear is not something that many campers, myself included enjoy. I respect your opinion and experience with gear, I've purchased and passed on items based on your experience. Just saying that what you do and how you camp differs from many of us who just go out there with good intentions, good knowledge and the best gear we can afford. Sometimes that just isn't enough. I'll continue to watch, listen and learn. Happy Holidays and best of health to you and your family.

Luke, he could have easily fallen, smacked his nose on a rock, developed a epidural bleed and hematoma. Smack your head, your nose on a rock and it’s easy to get a bleed inside your head. I have seen it happen to a healthy, young man, having blood taken for routine tests. He feinted and his head hit the floor. Sometimes it takes a few hours if the bleed is slow. He was taken to surgery and had to have big holes drilled in his skull to relieve the pressure. Been providing healthcare for decades. It happens. It’s incredible how delicate we are in some ways, how resilient we can be other times…from an old veteran, retired in the east Tennessee foothills of the Smokies.
