My favorite jackass moment will forever be the jet engine sequence, where the dude gets to hold on to the chair while the jet engine throttles up.

If I had to guess why Cruise is simultaneously a high level Scientologist and also appears to be the nicest guy ever on Earth, it's actually really, REALLY simple. Cult empowerment. Tom Cruise is a scientology ambassador, essentially. It's a common thing in cults for there to be a goal for the members (particularly high-ranking ones) to be a big, flashy, well-known name, and to give the cult a good name by connection with that individual. They'll work to set Guinness records, they'll work to take titles in this or that, they'll work to be big name actors or whatever, all in the search of giving the cult more power (and money, if they do it right). And Cruise has always seemed, to me, the absolute peak of this concept. A major, extremely well-known actor with a literally cult devotion to making his name hit the headlines on a yearly basis, while convincing everyone and their dog that he's actually such a sweet and nice guy and a perfect person and boy oh boy wouldn't YOU like to meet him and be in the same organization as this totally-not-a-psychopath? Now, I'm not saying this is definitively what's going on, but through that lens, it makes every single insane thing he's ever done make perfect sense while still meshing 1:1 with the fact he's a fucking scientologist.

You're almost certainly right. Personally, I don't believe half of the stories about Tom Cruise. We know about the fake ass and the personal screen writers, so it's not unreasonable to suspect that he's also dishonest in order to maintain his image in other ways. I don't doubt that he's insane or that he does some of his own stunts, but other, better trained, actors who do their own stunts accumulate injuries over time, while Tom Cruise...hurt his ankle once. I know I may sound like a conspiracy theorist, but there IS a concerted effort in Hollywood to keep stunt performers from getting their own Oscar category, and then here's Tom Cruise joining a 'religious' group dedicated to exploiting people, controlling public opinions, and is intentionally embedded in the entertainment industry. It's likely that Tom Cruise and Scientology are just each others' means to an end.

Yeah, it's pretty funny because for a while during the early 2000's Tom Cruise wasn't known as international nice guy and stunt doer. He was waning movie star guy who everyone knew was in a weird cult and was doing insane interview after insane interview culminating with him jumping up and down on Opera's couch like a lunatic. Then he kind of laid low publicly for a while and came back as stunt boy wonder mr. mc nice guy. We all just kind of blanked that period of time where Cruise was more known for being an eccentric weirdo in a cult from are memories.

I heard several times that Tom cruise stares with intense interest at everyone he meets yet his eyes seem very empty at the same time.

I was so scared of Jackass as a kid, because my friend had told me. If you say you want to be in jackass, some guys will come and shoot a dart at you and if you don’t flinch you’re in. I was terrified that at any point someone could come and throw darts at me. I also didn’t know which channel it was on and I didn’t want to know if that was the kind of stuff that was on there. It was only later that I found out what it actually is and that there was no chance of some American show coming to Denmark to throwing darts at me

I thought Karl was going to mention something like "dropkick through a table" and then show a few seconds from the fighting game he's in.

I would love to do the stunts in a movie as a movie star! I feel like just being the stunt person isn't the same - no one has the same incentive to keep you safe, and you'll only get to do things you already know how to do :(
