Barry's approach to coloring is kinda like stained glass and silk screening rolled up into one. It's not flat color, but it's drawing with color in a way that is like he's cutting Rubylith in his head to make the color plates. I started at Valiant during Barry's final 3 weeks or so, so I didn't get a chance to see him work, but the one thing I can say about his color palette is he likes to use ultra marine on the shadows. It's a good color to use on flesh tones especially because they tend not to go muddy on you.

As a comparison for drawing a blizzard, I would love to see you guys look at Amazing Spider-Man 555 and 556, where Chris Bachalo does the honors. I really dug those issues, and Bachalo's way of handling the adverse weather--and I think it's some of Bachalo's best comic art, period.

From his Storyteller page showing Weapon X color guides: "These panels offer an excellent example of the complexity of Windsor-Smith's comics coloring process. Subtle shades and shapes of color are indicated by a combination of painted watercolors, alphanumeric notations of specific color blends, and black line delineations of the boundaries of colored areas. The black lines between adjacent color zones served to aid the workers doing the hand color separation step of the pre computer age printing, and were not intended to appear on the final printed work. Using techniques like this, BWS refined the coloring of comics to a new level of sophistication within the limitations of the technologically antiquated process available at the time."

Sigh.... my "To Read" list is overwhelmingly long right now. Most likely won't ever finish all of it. Then I get up in the morning and see you guys posted a new video, IMMEDIATELY click it and without fail i think "I NEED TO READ THAT RIGHT NOW!" or in THIS case "I NEED TO REREAD THAT AGAIN!!" I know first hand the Kayfabe Effect is real and I know I can't be the only one lol

BWS is wonderful. In the 80s I bought his limited portfolio of pencil drawings. I now have all of them framed and around my bedroom. My wife of 35 years also loves them. They are as magic as they ever were.

I wish they would do an entire episode or series of episodes and talk more in depth about the printing process, it's evolution and how coloring has changed over the years. I have some experience with printing, so it makes sense to me (mostly), but I imagine some people must be a little confused by things like hand painting on the color plates, flexographic printing, zipatone etc. They probably wouldn't be the most viewed episodes, but it'd sure be an educational and fun* experience! I could have listened to them all day talk about the printing and color for Little Nemo. If they can make reading court depositions such an enjoyable experience, surely they can make that a fun* topic too! * Your fun mileage may vary.

Exactly... I remember (just barely, it was already on the way out when I started in the newspaper business) doing paste up with ruby lith and separations, things like that

This is hands down one of the greatest comics in the entire American comic history. the level of craft and t technical detail and the beautiful sickly color palette that barry loves. its just a completely prefect thing.

I always thought the reason Wolvi is all messed up at the beginning is because he has already been tangling with the reavers and they have injured him so badly that he's gone crazy, and yeah these guys are 3 of the hellfire guards Wolverine messed up in #133, the issue where John Byrne single hiddenly made Wolverine cool. 133 and the John Byrne Wolverine kayfabe would be a good video.

Re: widescreen panels at 00:19:28 - My first impression there was LONE WOLF & CUB and Miller's RONIN (minus the Moebius). I can see the connective thread you're discussing from LONE WOLF & CUB > RONIN> BWS > JIM LEE.

You guys should really look at Moon Knight issue 23 very similar to this book. I think it is Bill Sienkiewicz best work on Moon knight. The color and snow is handled in a similar fashion. Great work as always guys.
