Its also important to mention that LEGO recently announced that they've *finally* developed a bioplastic that can meet their, as you showed, *insane* quality control standards, and are committing to transitioning all their lines to bioplastic in the next few years. Which also means that the primary argument from various corporations against bioplastics, "They can't meet our required specifications," is null and void, because if infamously hardassed-on-quality LEGO can use them acceptably, *so can the rest of them.*
@sintanan469
@sintanan469 Жыл бұрын
I was following this bioplastic development when I was working the plastics industry in the late 2010s. It is really nifty, but afaik the current bioplastic is susceptible to UV radiation over time. Rather than discoloring it will eventually break down after a few decades. Gotta keep your bioplastic LEGO safe away from the sun for long-term storage now. Also, the bioplastic (ironically) is _not_ currently intended for their green trees and large leaves, as the plastic for those trees is softer and the bioplastic doesn't quite match the plasticity to replace the plastic for the trees.

Bionicle was a multimedia titan. The thing that got me into it far more than the toys back in 2001 was the Myst-esque adventure game on their website that updated with new locations to further the story in every few months. There were TONS of a books, there were comics, there were animations, there were movies... they published short stories on the website, as well as multiple games. The worldbuilding was inexplicably deep and included a lot of cool concepts. One of the early storylines was basically framed as "war correspondence" from the perspective of the civilians forced to become guerrilla fighters. It's really not that surprising it has a big fanbase still if you know about how extensive the property was. It was an extremely unique genre-bending setting that progressed a massive interconnected storyline across ten years, from when I was 8 all the way to 18.

I only actually owned one Bionicle toy, but I was super into the lore and characters. The browser game was definitely what hooked me, too. Me and my friends used to roleplay Bionicle or just debate about how the story would unfold. The toys were fine. Easy to put together, and I liked that they were posable and some of them could shoot stuff. There were much better action toys out there, though.

I worked at a toy store in NY when Lego bionicle came out 2000 or 2001 if I remember correctly. It completely changed how people interacted with Lego. You could buy a self contained under 20$ gift something that was actually a toy after you finished building it. Adults really liked this as regular Lego sets at the time we're seen as a nerd building type of toy. They had lego technic and were thought of like a science toy or sort of like model making kits for small children. Bionicle really revitalized the brand there would be 6 or 5 different colors so kids would want to collect them all and would beg their parents for "the red one" or whatever. Then they also had what we might call seasons of Bionicles now and every few months there would be 6 new Bionicles for you to collect. It made it so kids could just get bionicles for Christmas/birthdays for years and it would always be something new. Parents really loves it because they didn't have to think. It really also drove sales to other Lego stuff. Our Lego section grew from one small shelf next to the educational toys to a huge wall between the Playmobil and the spy toys. One thing I have thought of while i was writing this is we wrapped so so many toys and Bionicles came in these dang tubes that were a bit annoying to wrap, although we used tissue paper and cellophane which made wrapping weird shaped stuff easier.

I appreciate the way you phrased that. I was a bionicle kid, my parents got them for my birthday, my school had them in a prize shop. I loved Lego to start with, the open fun to build whatever, but you could interact with bionicle in a different way.

The growing lore and new sets every so often was good with Bionicle, but for some of us it ended up pushing it out of collecting them. I managed to get all of the original ones, but then all the stuff after I only had about two of each kind until they moved to the next era.

Audience Interaction! So like my favorite bits of Bionicle, because I didn't get very many actual bionicle, were the web games. They let me play with Bionicles, in a way, without having them. And I thought it was really neat that you weren't playing as one of the main characters, and you were someone whose job it was to be a storyteller for the two games I liked. It was really neat because there second one kept getting more added to it like episodes in a cartoon. But looking back on it now, it was just basically early access for the game before Early Access was a thing. Also do you know if longer comments are better for your channel, or if I could just say "the Lego company made some really nice flash games" Because I'd love to say something only tangentially related like "My favorite Lego web game was the racing one that was random generated and gave an animation that summarized the race against someone else"

What's funny is, as expensive as Lego is, they make very little profit off their bricks at all. Production is expensive, paying designers is expensive, build upkeep, management of properties, etc; and on top of all that, they have to make double the pieces that are sold due to things like piece replacement, Pick-A-Brick, and a plague of store scalpers (who are bold enough to even post videos of them doing it). Not to mention that they have a fanbase that doesn't really care about toy innovation whatsoever, so whenever Lego makes a decision to improve the quality of their bricks they get complaints. Such as Lego currently discontinuing every color of transparent bricks. (Spoilers, they're doing this to convert to a more sustainable plastic.)

I had knockoff lego that came in a plastic drum, I can’t remember if it was my dad or my Nan and grandad (probably my dad, it’s such a dad thing to do) but it was for my sisters birthday. It only had 3 sizes of bricks and a couple of small SMALL base plates. I really wanted to make a house for my sindy but we got as far as making two walls before we ran out and there was no way of making a roof. I’m also very sure it came from Argos because we pretty much lived in that place.

My story with Lego was one of discovering creativity. Some long time ago my grandparents uncovered a vertical box of Lego bricks (with a handle and Lego shaped lid) with a bunch of stuff. It also came with an instruction on how to build some car. I was (and still am) a pretty technical person. Following instructions and being precise and specific is something I enjoyed. But within the box there wasn't enough bricks to make the exact thing. I went to cry to my mum about it, and then she explained to me that it's no cause to be sad. I couldn't make this specific car, yes, but I COULD make *anything* I imagined. After that I ignited and began making some weird transformative pieces out of whatever the random assortment of bricks had in store. I think having the random collection of Lego stuff can be better for fostering creativity than a rigid set.

A while back for the 35th anniversary of transformers, they released a cel shaded Optimus prime and megatron that look EXACTLY like they did in transformers devastation, I think nowadays they run up to 40-50 bucks a piece, but they’re both really good affordable action figures. There’s also currently a huge slew of Generation one designs and prices can range from 10-70 dollars depending on size. They’ve also made 100-200 dollar “masterpiece” figures of the different characters that are hyper poseable and really accurate. You can get a starscream and say the line, Karl.

Ngl I love Bionicle simply bcuz it's so nostalgic to me now. I don't have any left but I'd be a happy man if I ever got one again. They're nostalgic to the point of bringing childhood joy back to my eyes lmao

At this point I genuinely have no idea what kind of toys im going to get my children when they're old enough for them. I want to get them Legos but I've seen the price tag on them and I don't know if I'll ever be able to actually afford that

I've collected many toy lines over the years: Lego, transformers, power rangers, gundams/gunpla but the one I'm really in for is Kamen Rider. Haven't gotten any of the adult collector line items yet (under the CSM line) but maybe someday. It's a bottomless pit of collecting though as bandai will sell literally anything seen on the show so gotta know what your wanting from it

The toy that i have very fond memories of, and would probably pay way too much for now is Zoids.

Also, bionicles were great because they had a lot of compact worm drive parts that were great for building my medieval artillery collection

I literally spent like 80 bucks on solid plastic star lord guns that are just for show (they don't do anything) although in my defense they were originally for halloween.

You reminded me of how i feel about the word waffle. Not the food, just the word. The more you say it, the dumber and sillier the word sounds.

I would buy a massive illuminated Enterprise D in a transparent coffeetable, someplace it could be on display, but not need to be dusted constantly. I know something like it exists or i could make my own. But space.
