This isn't entirely accurate. Elijah wood and Sean Astin were not quite as well known, but were both experienced actors as well. In one of the behind the scenes things Astin talked about how when they initially told him the salary he thought it would be per film, then learned it would be total. He ultimately decided it would be worth doing and even bought a house in new zealand so he could move his family out for filming iirc. Christopher Lee and John-rhys Davis and Sean Bean are also certainly well known actors, and i'm not sure what they got paid Iirc part of the issue was that the studios weren't on board with the films being made in the beginnings at all and made the entire process extremely contentious That said the actors all likely made quite a decent amount after the films doing expos and things like that. Which shouldn't be necessary but i don't think any of them walked away hurting financially from their contributions to the films

People forget that not all roles are created equal, even if they get much less screen time. It would have been very challenging to find a better match for Gandalf, Galadriel, or Arwen. Arwen was supposed to be the most beautiful elf in all middle earth, Galadriel a golden haired elf enchantress who was both beautiful and terrifying. Gandalf had to be physically fit, able to be in fight scenes, but also a phenomenal actor, look older, have a very kind but resonant voice, and very facially expressive. 175K in three years, making the greatest fantasy trilogy ever conceived seems perfectly reasonable. It was his first ever movie, and his first ever movie contract. He had no name before this. AND that’s still A lot of money. If I took all the annual salaries I’ve earned in the last 7 years, before tax, I would still only land at 162K. He made approximately 60K a year for his first job. That’s a 40 hour work week making $30 an hour, no vacations included. For his first job, that’s amazing. $1 in 2001 would be the equivalent of $1.75 today, or 75% more. That would mean the equivalent comparison of 175K in 2003 would be $175K + $131,250 = $306,250. In other words, $306,250 would be what he would’ve made if the films had been shot in 2023. Thats 10x more money in one year compared to my 30K annual. That’s being paid $50 an hour. For a first job contract, making 100K a year, that’s pretty fucking damn good.

Andy Serkis deserved it. He was amazing, should have got an Oscar. The making of shows all the gymnastic work he put into the role, and almost ruining his vocal chords in the process.

They actually filmed all three movies simultaneously in 438 days and Orlando bloom as a brand new actor when he got the Legolas role, so 175,000 for a brand new after in the early 2000s seems pretty good

Legolas was so broke he used his shield as a skateboard at Helm's Deep.

Erm you also forgot to mention Orlando Bloom was straight out of college. It was his first role so why the fuck are they gunna pay him millions

It wasn't his first role in a movie

This is not surprising that well known actors made the most money. What makes Lotr so good is that many of the main characters were relatively unknown actors at the time and they absolutely killed it becoming iconic

Orlando actually reminds me why some people complaining about pay differences on Holywood is some sort of BS. It's an opportunity for future roles so if you are an unknown actor/actress you can't expect to receive the same as others, which makes sense.

They needed better agents, and some of them simply weren't known at the time.

I thought only women actors (they used to be called actresses) were paid less. Uh oh

Wait, I know I saw Cait talking about how little she got paid for LOTR on Andy’s show. But y’all are saying it was actually multi-million dollar deal? Why would she say that?
@DoggosAndJiuJitsu9 ай бұрын
Wait. I got this. The girl who played Strider’s love interest, but only per capita based on credentials. See, it’s 2024 so she demanded equal salary despite not equally contributing. The ol’ WNBA / USWS move.

Good thing they didn't get Sean Connery, then. They offered him $125M to play Gandalf. He read the script and said, "Nah, not for me."
@ПророкМухоедАй бұрын
Do you really believe that an actor would be payed 125m$ in 1999? Even for 3 movies? Come on.

Cate Blanchett has said in a TV interview, that she didn't get paid at all for LOTR, so where did the multi-million pound contract info come from?

Andy earned that money. Few people could convincingly play Gollum. I remember having a very hard time even picturing the creature when I read the books before the movie existed.

Andy Serkis revolutionized the way CGI was done from that point on. Of course he deserves every last cent.
