Spiff, look into the game_speed configuration option for servers. I suggest setting this to something lower than 1.0 (like between 0.8 and 0.9), this should grant the server enough time to process, allow other players to keep playing and perhaps help a bit. A 10% reduction will be barely noticeable.

For the next server game, you should unlock all the research up to a certain point (like all red and green reseach) and have a basic factory and small set up for people to rapidly expand. Also make sure to include the research queue. Also I have no idea how mods work in server games, but you should give some QOL mods like Squeeze through. Also you should just give yourself Spidertron to drive around to lord over your players.
