I love these types of tests! They make it simple and allow the visual to show the reality. It's easy to say that old seeds stop being viable, but when you see real world results, it all makes sense.

Awesome experiment sam!🙌 you have done the lawn community a tremendous service as no one else has done this type of experiment that i know of and u definately have answered questions i have had about left over seed and its viability👊🏼i also grew some grass in a container this year to test it. Ska du vertikalskära så hade jag nog gjort det så snart som möjligt egentligen, för att ge så mycket tid till återhämtning som möjligt, speciellt om du bor längre norrut. Frågan är väl egentligen om du behöver vertikalskära egentligen? Om du inte har mycket thatch eller om du vill tunna ut din matta för att föryngra så finns det egentligen ingen anledning att göra det, då räcker det med att elkratta den och sen stödså och på med dress. Det är det jag kommer göra.

Hi Sam! Thanks for the video. Your lawn looks so good! Here in Greece, we had a heatwave for 2 weeks with 45 celcius, and the lawn is gone...! Instead, weeds took over with amazing speed 80% of the lawn. But I will not give up. I have already removed and cleaned all the weeds, hoed and scarified, and now I have nice clean soil ready for seeding by the end of August - beginning September. The question is, which cool season seed has best heat tolerance ? I was thinking tall fescue and maybe overseed with some warm season bermuda grass next spring? Can those two get along together?

Hi Lucy, I was actually thinking about you the other day when I was watching the news, looks like it's very very hot in Greece at the moment, hope you get some cooler temps soon! Sorry to hear about the lawn, I guess that was inevitable with those high temps. Tall fescue is for sure the most heat tolerant cool season grass, but if it works with bermuda or not I am not sure, I'm not that great with warm season grasses. My initial thought would be that the Bermuda would spread and take over eventually and outcompete the tall fescue. But I can't say that or sure, that's just my guess. Why not try a full warm season lawn? Like st augustine or bermuda?

I was told seed is only good for about 3 years. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Scotland.what parts did you visit?. If you had known you were coming, you could have opted round for a cup of tea.😂

Hey Ray, I was also told that the seeds would be just fine in the shed, at least for a couple of years, not at this rate it won't :) This time it was to Edinburgh, but we go almost every year to Scotland, my favourite place to visit, even got married outside of Fort William. If I am close by I'll definitely drive by to check your lawn ;)

What fertilizer do you used

Different kinds depending on the time of the season, but usually a normal high nitrogen fertilizer callen Florovit in Sweden

I heard that seeds that are physically larger, so less seeds per pound, survive longer, come up in poorer conditions. This information is hard to Weasel out of suppliers.

Hey Wayne, hmm that's interesting! I know the new Rye I am using has really large seeds, it's a tetraploid seed so they are huge. I might do another test of those next year to see if they lose less viability. Thanks for the info dude!
