The stone border along against your house encourages water to go down and go against the structure, you need to keep the water above the ground and running away from the house. The landscape timbers on the house side need to go, they're trapping the water and damaging your house. Your idea for the holes is kind of a way to get rid of water, NOT collect it. The surface water has no way to get to your drains and if deep enough, slow to drain. Ways to collect surface water are clean gutters & down spouts and surface drains. French drains collect sub surface water, I don't think that's your problem. Once collected, it needs to be sent to a place where it won't be able to come back. It can run downhill off a patio or driveway or downhill across your clay soil and grass lawn. You can run it thru pipes. As a last resource, if you don't have fall, you can pump it away. Where does your roof water go? That's the most common cause for your type of problems. If in your yard, you need to get rid of it. You can pitch your property, but your landscape borders are what's holding the water. Clay soil and grassroots keep the water on the surface so if pitched water will run away from your house but get caught by the higher beds and timbers.

I bought the ryobi 'dethatcher' attachment for my scarifier. It has spring tines, but at the tips they have a 90degree bend which in theory should grab and pull up the thatch...

Never heard of that aerator, looked it up, looks so cool! I would love to try it out, but the shipping to Sweden is a lot, especially if you can´t be 100% sure it will fit the mower. One question though, if you fit it to your mower, does it have enough weight to punch holes? Most electric mowers are very lightweight.

"'Power rakes are designed for heavy-duty thatch removal, equipped with rotating blades that aggressively cut through and remove dense layers of thatch,' says Gene Caballero, co-founder of GreenPal, a Tennessee-based lawn care services company. 'On the other hand, dethatchers, or scarifiers, target lighter layers of thatch. They are ideal for preventive maintenance, ensuring that thatch does not reach levels where it could impede the health and growth of the grass,' Caballero explains." (Bob Vila) And according to Atha Rental in Georgia: "A dethatcher, sometimes called a scarifier, is designed to remove a layer of thatch. It typically features a series of metal tines or blades that comb through the grass, pulling up the thatch debris. On the other hand, a power rake is much more aggressive; it digs deeper into the soil, using rotating flails or tines to thoroughly disturb the soil and remove thatch along with some soil particles." If you rent a power rake, it will be a machine with blades.
@officemanager8624
@officemanager8624 Ай бұрын
You have to rent a power rake to get true thatch removal results. It will actually destroy the lawn, and then you'll need to immediately reseed. It should only be used if thatch layer is greater than 1/2". And should be done sparingly thereafter. In between applications, the dethatcher or scarifier should be used. (Power rake is the one with blades).
@officemanager8624
@officemanager8624 Ай бұрын
You actually have the names mixed. The power rake has metal blades or flail. It's much more aggressive. On the other hand, the dethatcher or scarifier is the one with the metal tines. And yes it may seem counterintuitive.

If that happens then we can take a verdict that the citric acid do the job

Hi Sam, as you evaluate, the soil is not bad. Certainly not wet. You have rye fescue don't you? BTW, dont believe all you hear. If you drill into the clay, then it wont get the water away. Simple. You may get some dry weather and you, like others will say, 'its worked, amazing' . I would look at why your neighbours are better. Is it drainage, is it the same grass? Are they when you get on top of them? Your soils are not wet, wet so i would suggest its not necessarily a soil issue but a plant selection issue...

Hi David, I know this is a long shot, just wanted to try it out :) I do have rye fescue at the moment, I know you would probably want me to try out bentgrass ;) I might give it a go actually! But I have never seen a lawn over here that has bentgrass, the only ones that use bentgrass over in Sweden are golf courses. Would it work here you think? But I think my main problem is that we´ve had so harsh winters the last 2-3 years and that´s about the time when I started over with my lawn so I don´t think the grass has gotten a good chance to establish properly to withstand these winters. That´s at least my theory.
@lawnassociation
@lawnassociation Ай бұрын
@@SamsLawn I would imagine, having never been, that most of your country has bent fescue, like the UK. Golf courses use it as its already telling us it grows here on all soil types, and its adaptable. Rye loves food, water, mowing, seeding (you have too) and it relies on the instant factor that somehow people see as successful. Fescue loves dry, low nutrition, very limited watering and time to get roots down (rye never gets roots down) So, skill is learning what grows well in your country (we have 99% of the UK in bent/fescue) and learning what it likes, from seeing areas that arent maintained as well as those that are. It still needs work, but creating grass is not one of them. It does that for you. Every day.

Hi Sam, Any reason to buy the Luba 2 instead of Luba 1? I think I can buy a used one from second hand website for about a EUR 1100. Worth it instead of brandnew one for more than double? @SamsLawn
@SamsLawn Ай бұрын
Hey Mathias, I have not tried the Luba 2 so I can´t really say if it´s worth the upgrade. But the Luba 1 was awesome in my opinion. From what I understand from Mammotion themselves, the Luba 2 has a camera on it so it´s less vulnerable to signal losses, it can still navigate even if it loses connection to the RTK station. So I would say, if you have a pretty clear area without many trees and things in the way of the RTK station then the Luba 1 will work just fine. I still think it will work fine even with a few obstacles but it might give you some head ache from time to time due to signal loss. Especially if you get a good price like that, then paying more than twice that for a Luba 2 might be a bit overkill. Let me know what you decide mate and how it works out. Good luck!

Hello Sam, Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I'm helping a friend renovate his lawn at present and its just been scarified. We want to topdress it with fine, sieved, sterilised topsoil in 30 liter bags. The area of the lawn is 1,440 square feet, 133.78 square meters. Firstly, how do I work out how much topsoil I need to adequately cover the lawn and what is a general rule of thumb as regards to the ideal depth with which to apply the soil? Should this be achieved by hand from a wheelbarrow or by using a spreader? As to fertilizers, two queries please Sam - could I appply 7 6 17 NPK granular fertilizer to this lawn with a good start next spring the intention ? And do you personally rate seaweed fertilizer as a recommendable lawn topdressing medium for spring? With thanks, Best wishes, Will
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn 3 ай бұрын
Hey Will, sorry for the late reply, had a week off and went on vacation. I usually calculate 1 ton of topdress for about 80-100 m2, and that will give you about 1 cm of depth, which is usually good for just topdressing. You could do it by hand or do it with a landzie spreader, they work great but are a bit pricy. If you "only" have 130 m2 lawn then by hand should be just fine. Make sure you take a broom and brush everything in so it doesnt cover the existing grass. The two numbers on a fertilizer bag I pay attention to before winter sets is the P and the K, the Nitrogen can be 0 even, as long as the other two numbers are high to give the grass the best chance over winter. But there is controversy here, especially between EU and US, we over here in Sweden do not use any nitrogen before winter but in the US it is recommended to use Nitrogen. I don´t see the point since N pushes growth and the grass is dormant so it will just end up leaching out in my opinion. Seaweed is always recommended, I love that stuff. Hard to give exact data that it works, but I feel the grass always does better with seaweed on. Hope I am not too late with the info mate, good luck!
