Another good way to seed a area.(with somewhat of a hole) Is to add top soil 75-80%, then on that add a mix of topsoil, peat moss, and grass seed. Peat moss is good for air,water flow and makes it easier for roots to grow down in the dirt. (No hole hardish soil)Use a garden weasel(rotory cultivator) to loosen the soil really good then just add the seed,peat and soil mix. Most people dont water correctly around my area. People with sprinklers over water and float the seed down the road, or dont have sprinklers and only water after work and the seed has been fried by the sun. A little extra peat moss can add shade or help hold the seed on a slightly more hilly area.
@JealousLawnCare5 жыл бұрын

I mean I put my grass seed( Scott sun and shade mix) on the naked dirt with Scott starter fertilizer and covered the seed up with some peat moss . I actually had irrigation that water 4 times a week. Do you think it going to sprout or do I have to buy some compost for the seed?
@JealousLawnCare4 жыл бұрын
H20 Water -- no you don't need it to grow grass seed but this method will definitely give it a better chance / result. Need to make sure you water the grass seed to keep it moist for growth.

This makes me want to rip up my whole lawn and reseed but really overseed for maximum thickness. Lawn is pretty green and weed free, it’s just really thin in certain spots and not quite level. KBG takes way longer to grow compared to the other seeds. It's also a much smaller seed. Once it's up the rhizomes will fill in bare spots. That's something Fescue won't do. This is why most mixes that contain KBG has rye grass with it. If you seed with 100% KBG you will be waiting a long time before it's actually established.
@JealousLawnCare5 жыл бұрын

Every sod lay I have done (myself, solo) - from small sections to 1,000 sq feet, have all been a stunning success. owner was told to water twice a day and miracle grow crystals were dissolved and sprayed on newly laid sod with great effect. ALSO, the area needs to be cut out as you did in your seed example plot. The new sod needs to be laid flush with existing surrounding sod lay. If you don't want to prepare your plot first before laying sod pieces, then don't waste your time. Most ppl are OK with a Spanish speaker gang rushing up, dropping the sod pieces - sans prep - and then running away with a cash payment. Stupid is what stupid does.

@JealousLawnCare4 жыл бұрын
Yep I always wondered too, now we all know :-)
@ScottAyersStuff5 жыл бұрын
Your comment about how the heavy seeded area looks great is not really true. Yes. It looks ok right now. But when it matures in a couple of years you will end up with clumps of grass resembling weeds!! Installing a KBG lawn require 2-3 years. Because it needs to spread out underground for that long before it looks full. Most people don't have the patience for this. Everyone wants great looking full grass in 2 weeks. Which is why KBG typically comes with RYE in it. RYE grass grows in 8 days. Making those impatient humans happy. But RYE is not hardy enough in many areas to last very long. If you want a full looking lawn in a hurry and don't care how long it lasts. Put down all RYE seeds and it will grow super fast. But my advice is to use a KGB mix with very little RYE and/or fescue. And NEVER put down too much seed. Then give it at least 2 years to fill in. Great lawns don't happen in weeks. They happen in years.
@JealousLawnCare5 жыл бұрын
Scott Ayers -- good info here, thank you! However I have not experienced any clumping or issues from heavy handing seed in the past. I will keep an eye on this test area shown in this video. It's been almost a year and currently no issues. I'll let you know what I find if issues pop up!

@@JealousLawnCare IMO. It's already very clumpy looking in your video. It looks like a type of weed we get here in the NE. But if you like it that's all that matters. Different strokes for different folks. ;-) But for people who are more picky and want a more even lawn. It's important not to put down too much seed like that. Cheers!

In my back yard is shade I'm try Scots sun shade after I mix some fertilizer in. An contractor's rebuilt are garage and store up lawn they hired an Rookie to grow grass they just threw top soil over compacted soil and then threw seed on top of new soil in 80° weather without water or back raking the seeds. I backed rake the seeds and water them I got little more grass than I thought it be but not full kind of patching.
@ScottAyersStuff5 жыл бұрын
@@louishollandjr You don't say where you live. I'm in upstate NY. And one thing I learned the hard way is that the time of year you seed is just as important as the type of seed(maybe even more so). In my area. If it's in the 80's every day then putting down seed is a waste of time, money, and effort. Because the grass grows too slow and the weeds will push out the new grass seeds. It needs to be in the low 70s here to grow grass properly. That means seeds should only go down in very early spring and very early fall(around September 1st). Last year we had a brand new lawn installed in mid May. It came up pretty nice. Then July & August rolled in with constant 90 degree sunny days. And killed all of the new grass!!! I got the lawn re-seeded again in September for free last year. And this spring its gorgeous. So I learned an important lesson. Never, ever, seed before September 1st in my area. Not even in early spring. Because summer sun here kills new grass like a laser beam. A lot of people here get caught in that trap. They go to Home Depot in the summer and by seeds. And all they grow is weeds. And don't know why. You will need to figure out what time of year your area is best for growing grass the best. Every area has one small window of time where it works the best. I can guarantee you that if you plant seeds in only that sweet spot time of year wherever you live. You'll have much better luck.

Shahzad Akhund -- what seed did you use and how often were you watering? Raking up the ground before seeding and then watering religiously afterwards to keep moist are 99% of why seeding fails.
@Shahzad58144 жыл бұрын
@@JealousLawnCare I tried both the Scotts brands, without adding any fertilizer as it comes premixed, that didn't work, then I tried pure seeds and added fertilizer. Only thing that I didn't do was to add manure or compost to the new soil, and I kept it moist by watering every day after putting the seeds as I was told that there should be 1 inch of water for the seeds to establish roots.
@JealousLawnCare4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend watering more often (not deep watering) in the first few weeks. Starter fertilizer will definitely help any new seed or grass (even established grass as well), speeds up the germinating time and gets better root growth. If you rake up the ground and make it nice loose soil that will help greatly also. No real need for compost or special soil, it's not the culprit.

It depends where are you located? If those 2 grass types are common in your area then no problem to grow those. The problem is you being away for a week during these summer months. Seed / soil needs to always keep moist within the first few weeks of it won't grow. You would need someone to water or have automatic sprinklers running while you are away.

@TheATLReporter4 жыл бұрын
The Pennington seeds grew faster, thicker, greener. It's amazing as the Scott's cost much more, but performed in a marginal manner. The Pennington seeds are amazing. The Scotts seeds resulted in a very spotty lawn section. My planting process is IDENTICAL to yours. I am indeed a novice at Fescue, my front lawn is a beautiful Bermuda lawn, but due to a canopy of growing trees, my backyard is full of shade. I do have birds in the yard, but I have feeders for them, so they aren't so much eating the seeds, but I suspect they do at times. I ran out of Pennington seeds, and decided to get Scott's EZ deep shade seeds. Everyone seem to talk about Scotts seeds...these seeds cannot compare to Pennington, and I regret I used them, since now I am having to go over large sections and re-seed with Pennington. I live in Atlanta, and my fear is soon the 90 plus degree temperatures will return, and I will have to stop seeding. Any advice I would welcome....BEST VIDEO on planting Fescue seeds I HAVE SEEN....and I've seen a ton

I am here in New York and I put down the PGF complete right about a week ago and I am wondering if I should be watering my lawn everyday? 2-3 weeks before I put the PGF down I put down the milorganite. We aren't getting much rain and so far I see no difference. 1/4 of my lawn is kinda fried looking, I think from the from the dry spell we had along with the 90 degree days. I am trying to get it back into shape. Any suggestions? Should I just keep watering? Last year I used milorganite all year and was the cool gal on the block. Now .. not so much :(:(:( What can I do?
@JealousLawnCare4 жыл бұрын
Yes it's been a pretty dry hot summer, interestingly the pgf seems to be a slow release formula but it wants you to water daily for 5 days after application to see results. Seems strange because most slow release fertilizers don't need to water (just let nature take its course). Watering regularly through summer will definitely get it back to green yes, or you can let the grass go dormant like most do in summer months. Just need to keep it alive with watering deep once every week or 2 with this method. I assume you have not changed anything else since last year? Hopefully you are keeping the grass nice and tall to protect the roots with shade and using a nice sharp mower blade!
@CrAzYAuNtSiSsy4 жыл бұрын
Hi There @@JealousLawnCare. My lawn is taking forever to pop back to life. I have no idea why this happened. Can this really happening from fertilizing in the heat and not much watering? Why I say not much watering, I did water weekly for hours at a time. But now it's still pretty ugly looking in quite a few spots. Your so kind to take the time out and answer. I have been watering every morning so far for 1-1/2 hours each time. Hoping to see a change but it's still 90 and mad hot with no rain in site. This is killing me because my lawn was the lawn everyone would normally be "jealous" of!
@JealousLawnCare4 жыл бұрын
JoAnn Arizona -- no it should not be due to fertilizing in summer due to the products you used are both slow release. If you are watering deep every few days that should be ideal to bring the green color back. Are you cutting the grass at your tallest setting or close to it? This helps protects the grass roots in summer heat and also give more green look. Also a sharp mower blade also helps too, so you don't have brown tops on all the blades of grass.
