Factory Reset: Quest 3 Passthrough Before and After

This is the last video I'll be dedicating to the Quest 3 passthrough. I feel like it's been discussed and it's done, for now at least. But this video covers my new experience, how I got there, comparisons across different headsets, and just generally addresses some of the issues posed by the online community. I wanted to comment here for a little info. A few people have shown up on my Discord server sharing their own through the lens footage, convinced they were having a grainy, unacceptable experience. But the footage a few of them shared looks like mine. This reset or update that made my experience better is tangible, but it's clear that some people think the grain can be resolved through doing the reset I mentioned, and we're just talking about two separate issues. A handful of people have commented here confirming they've got better passthrough now, but to my knowledge this is only in regards to how the cameras deal with bright screens, and that was what I mostly took issue with from the start. The grainy resolution is just the headset, so far as I can tell. Lighting your room with an unfathomable amount of lights will make it noticeably more crisp, but I don't believe anyone complaining about low resolution is gonna find solace here. It's just the limitations of the cameras. If you're curious how your footage measures up, feel free to DM me your own passthrough footage and I'll post it to the server for comparison.

Unfortunately that didn't really come across in your video. You have started a fire :-) Now everybody thinks a lot resets will eventually give them a clear passthrough! It was interesting but I can't see how a random amount of resets would fix anything to do with the display so I never actually tried it. If exposure did improve for you that's great and we can await some sort of software improvements later on.

Well, if it means anything at all, this is from Meta yesterday. "With regards to your question about the update, Allow me to inform you that version 60 includes enhancements with passthrough and boundary, which most likely helped in resolving your reported issue." And: "It is likely that the issue was within the Meta Quest software, and one possible reason is that the software was not installed properly on the headset. This issue usually gets resolved via factory reset, since this forces the headset to reinstall the software."

I feel like a new issue that seems to be happening is once you activate battery saver mode, it drops the resolution, and then even turning the option off, it still stays suck in low resolution mode.

Yes I found that, I also found it to be a little blury. I found it very uncomfortable to wear after using the meta 3 for about 15 minutes. I sent mine back.

Thanks for all your valuable input on the passthrough camera issues. I just got my Quest 3 and started using it this last week (around March 8th 2024), so I am still learning how the VR headset works and its features. I am learning from all of you "You Tube" reviewers. I have not played around with passthrough enough to other than yes I have brought it up and what kind of clarity we should get. I am down in a basement where the light is good but not the greatest. I shall see as time goes on how my passthrough operates and the camera quality. Thanks for the video and take care.

Just to add one thing, seems with the new Quest 3 updates the passthrough feature does look better now. Looks clearer with the version 64 updates. before this, my passthrough was kind of snowy, grainy. take care.

Factory resetting mine (5 times) actually cleared up the blurry vision a lot! I didn't notice anything right away so I let it sit a week then turned it on and wow huge difference! I can now read my phone and some what watch TV. Turning off hand tracking also helped

I blame 100% Meta's scattered feature updates for passthrough inconsistency. You can be on the latest firmware but using an old version of the hand tracking or passthrough components. Even if you do a factory reset that doesn't ensure you are on every component's latest version. And you can't check what version tou are in. Sidenote: people, you also need to clean the camera lenses. It may sound silly but a lot of people forget to clean the outside lenses.

I factory reseted mine a couple times and i didnt get it as clear but I do notice an improvement. Im going to sit this out for a bit and just hope that the meta team figures out a fix in a future update because im not to interested in MR rn but soon ill be into that space.

After factory reset when it became clear, did you not bother updating back to whatever the current version is, v60.whatever? If not, have you tried to see if updating back to current version undoes the clarity you obtained?

very, very interesting. Pass through is terrible. I even contacted Meta support. They said if I could read text from a book then it was fine. I can but it's just fuzz and grain. your experience points to some sort of software issue so there may be a fix furhter down the line! You are the first person I have heard from that has got pass through to work. I mean seen the difference between good and bad. Up until now I thought it was the same for everybody but their interpretation of good was different.

Might be a timing issue during the reset. The camera driver might not be running correctly at the time settings are made and therefore skipped.

I saw Many pass through Examples online ad was impressed, Then I tried a demo unit in store and the passthrough was Great Very clear and clean. Then there is mine which it grainy and even on a 34 ultrawide and a iPhone 15 plus I struggle to real the text and everything is grainy and low quality and blow out glare. So I walked a round the house and tried different lighting and rooms and it Bearly changed. As a VR dev this is annoying because development would be much nicer if when testing stuff I could makequick code changes with the headset still on. And thanks for going to the lengths you did to trouble shoot the device this actually proves there is some kind of issue going on that meta needs to look in to. This seems to me like a Firmware driver issue, where the Correct drivers for either the cameras or the light sensor are not being Applied

Stores have STRONG lights and it's not easy to evaluate how strong they are with your eyes. Use an exposure meter to measure the two environments and you'll be surprised. That said driver issues could totally be a real thing, but being a videomaker struggling with lights and correct exposure for years, I bet 99% of the time it's simply people misjudging the lights of their living rooms. Even with the same light bulbs, a slightly darker floor makes a lot of difference to a small camera sensor, so it's also a matter of the actual surfaces being filmed and how the autoexposure algorithm handles them.

I am going to try a few factory resets to see if it is a system issue, but I will be returning the headset if the passthrough quality isn't resolved shortly.

Thanks for all your research. I really want to factory reset my Q3 to see if the pass through improves, but last week I finally got my Q2 and Q3 to work together and share my apps. I'm afraid of resetting it because it was like black magic getting that to work! I cannot even explain how I got them working because none of the documentation I found was accurate. If Meta wants this tech to become mainstream, it should not be so difficult to do basic things. I won't even go into how hard it was for my brother and I to get multiplayer working in DoE. I love this tech, but when two geeks have to fight the thing to get it working, the casual user doesn't have a prayer.

thank you for this. I've had my q3 for 5 days and was concerned about passthrough and bloom. its my first headset so I wasn't sure what baseline was. I recently had cataract surgery at a young age and bloom was annoying, hard to stay immersed. could only see my phone if I turned phone brightness all the way down. if I watched a movie it felt like the lenses were always dirty or fogged. i considered taking the unit apart and cleaning everything...lol. I first installed the 64 beta firmware and noticed no help. but the factory reset helped a lot. now I can see my phone at normal brightness and my pc screen is viewable. though text is blurry unless I get pretty close. also objects further than about 8 feet away are rather blurry. not sure what "normal" is here. overall a big improvement. again. thank you.

My passthrough is pretty poor quality and I'm wondering if resetting would help, but I already installed a bunch of apps on there and don't want to have to download those again. Also hearing that you may need to reset multiple times just sucks. I hope Meta figures this out.

No. Clarity was always better with a ton of lights, and it still sucks in the dark. This is mostly about screens and being able to use them.

Most likely the issue is software related and due to uneven lighting. The cameras are not calibrating but are auto exposing. Each camera is exposing for how much light it has on its sensor. Therefore they can probably fix the balancing of exposures for multiple cameras through a software update.

Trying to build a collection of recordings so people can better see what they're missing, how their experience measures up, and to maybe even confirm that what some people have is as good as the rest of us. Even as happy as I am with this update, expectations are still pretty high, and it's not gonna be perfect, especially with these differently lit rooms.

Goddamn dude. Got my quest after watching you thrash the pass through. When I finally got it on Saturday, my first thought was “he’s right this really is dogshit.” My wife and friend said they don’t mind and I admittedly got used to it. Grainy as hell. I gotta really really dial the focus and brightness perfectly with it close to read texts on my phone. My vision is very good and my phone text is small. Then I actually saw your Reddit posts and just understood now that it was you. Probably done 3 factory resets now. Idk how to fix it. But I have hope.

I got my quest yesterday and while i could see everything i dont know if its because its a camera or its software but its grainy af. That being said i could somewhat read my phone. But thinking about what you said here after my quest updated it was harder to read it in the same lighting and brightness i have a hunch its something with the updates. Which i havent messed with to see if i could maybe roll it back.

Wow glad I saw this video I just opened the Quest 3 for Xmas and I was not happy with the grainy pass through. I was like hmm I guess more light as that’s all I heard for passthrough troubleshooting ha. I’m going to try a factory reset first thing in the am. I’ll try and update w an edit. They're not gonna get that granular with the options, mostly because they want a one size fits all approach. But what you're talking about can be achieved through the Quest Games Optimizer. I've been playing Asgard's Wrath with that higher resolution and I refuse to play standalone without it.

Honestly my quality wasn’t bad. Sure I do have a film grain effect and phones a little blown out, but not to the point where I need to reset. My lights are on but the bulbs might not offer the recommended amount of light it needs. And lowering the backlight of the phone did help with the blowout quality.

Would factory reset help with random stuttering in some games? Some games run great but others have stuttering. Pavlov runs great while contractors stutters at times.

I can't speak to that. Sorry. Probably wouldn't hurt, but I've experienced it myself where some games just aren't optimized well. I personally haven't had too many issues in Contractors.

Can You describe how You did perform the Factory Reset and did You do the initial Setup and Firmwareupdate every time ? Can You remember at what lightning condition it was at the final Reset, when the picture was good ? Did You wear the headset at (final) factory reset or did You lay it down on the table until it finished ? Sorry for the many questions, I just try to figure out if there maybe is an indicator which does the trick !? I tried about 20 resets under different conditions and steps, but still doesn't change anything for me. My whole home has superior lightning setup with Philips Hue and I tried it with every window wide open with Sun lighting up the room as well as different Hue Setups (Warm, Cold, Simulated Outdoor Light, etc.) and tried it in different rooms. Still the Passthrough looks very grainy and the same in all the different conditions, similar to Quest 2 but with color, maybe a little bit cleaner. I can barely see/read whats on Monitors/TV's and Phone. At certain angle and about 30-50 cm distance I can see/read it a littlebit better but its very blurred. I don't think it's about screen brightness it's almost the same with printed book. Would be helpful, if You'll be able to remember and share as much details as possible. Maybe we can figure out, what will help, fixing this issue. THX

20 resets is completely unnecessary. One would have done the trick if it was gonna do anything at all. I didn't do 7 resets in a row. I've done 7 resets over the headsets lifetime and I'm sure the last one either expedited an update behind the scenes or recalibrated the cameras some how. I did the factory reset from the boot menu. And yes, the nature of doing the reset requires you to perform that initial setup again. Can't help with the other questions. They're too nebulous and it was too long ago. It was either an update that was pushed through behind the scenes or it was a simple camera calibration.

I'm definitely going to have to try factory resetting. Just got a Quest 3 yesterday and I was severely underwhelmed with the passthrough even in bright light. Mine looks like what yours did at the start. I can't read anything on my phone, TV, or PC. It's just a blurry blown out mess.

My problem isn’t so much the dynamic range, it’s the insane amount of noise. Whether I’m in a dark room at night lit by 1 dim light, or literally standing outside in the middle of the day, the amount of noise is the same. The minimum focus distance with both eyes is around 20 to 30 cm, but I have to get within at least 30cm to even be able to read regular text on a monitor. Even after now trying 5 factory resets in a row, nothing changes…

Mine is so bad q3 (I bought it because someone else’s was great) I’m considering returning it. It even has a clear line if I look up or down where the quality changes. Equivalent to like 4k to 480p. Definitive difference.

I'm listening and looking at your video with my laptop and have the headset on with the regular passthrough: I can type and read everything. True it is not super sharp, but the best as far as I have with any headset before. Most likely there might be some software upgrades to even adress the blurriness. It was done with the Pico4, so why not with the Quest3? Any better and you don't even need to take off the headset anymore and live in an AR world.....

hmmm :( I dont want to factory reset my quest and loose all downloaded apps :( But I think the clarity you showed after the reset is way better than mine. Funny is that the clarity on a recording is perfect. I do not understand why they cannot pass that to the displays in general as clear as in the recording. I mean it is significant clearer on a recording then on passthrough for me.

That's mostly gonna be because the "good passthrough" you're seeing from others isn't magnified by the lenses. That screen door effect is greatly reduced, but it's not gone.

For me even at low light levels quest 3 just worked out of the box. What I did notice was passthrough on my quest 2 stopped working properly somewhere between v59 and v60 PTC. It just stopped working in one eye. it sorted itself out when I messed about with the settings and erased my boundaries. Maybe it was a software issue for you cleared by your factory reset.

My quest two lost all tracking. Been going back and forth with Meta and the warranty is up. Once I did a factory reset after uninstalling meta The headset would show the screen again but tracking lost. Controllers disconnect.

lol i have the same problem with my q2. but i installed sidequest on the q2 and then passthrough only worked on bootup, and then only right eye. after factory reset it worked flawless. i played 2h of population one and still worked. then installed sidequest again and same problem again. i contacted meta and thay would send me a new quest, but i think thay are doing this so you dont install third party apps and stick to meta apps ;-)

The work around for the left eye going black is to turn off space sense. It is apparently a known issue.

I can tell you why the Factory reset worked for him that time. He most likely had all of his devices in his room turned off. The oculus 3 headsets are extremely sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies, radio waves IR light, Broadband frequencies as in your router, so before you do a factory reset. Make sure you're away from all other devices or better yet cover your headset in aluminum foil then do a factory reset. Thank me later. I'm not joking when I say these headsets are sensitive to outside influences. Maybe ghost hunters should start using them.

Perfectly plausible, but my issue was resolved on v59. At the time of making this video it notified me v60 was available. But there are different builds within every version. So it's hard to say where it took place.

He's speaking 💯 FACTS! I just bought the Meta Quest 3 last night and the passthrough is a blurry, hazy mess. In fact, my passthrough wouldn't even work until I turned the VR off and then back on. Strangely enough, when playing that mixed reality game First Encounters, the passthrough looked decent. But, I'm definitely gonna try a factory reset.

It's clearly a software bug that is causing the camera functions (auto exposure, iso, etc) to not adjust properly, which gives the blown out whites and grainy visuals. Is there a way to back up save files?

I honestly don't know. Strange that Steam remembers your progress, but now that I think of it. I'm not sure if Quest does. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

I just did a factory reset, and my quest 3 did improve greatly. Before the reset, my room was a little darker and grainy, afterwards, my room was a lot brighter and clearer. A big difference from before. Thanks for the info, Now I have re-load everything, but the reset was worth it! Thanks bro!!!!!!

I was having problems with a bright light, it flickered everytime I moved. I changed the light bulb for a new one and it worked perfectly.

When I was using the quest I discover it was bad, so I was talking to Meta and was about to send it back as faulty, but then I used it in another room and was shocked how much better it was. I just looked for the brightest natural sun colour I could find. Well I hope this helps some people.

I have some really annoying problems with the Quest pro Controllers connected to the Quest 3. Especially the left controller loses tracking very often and only fixes itself after a full restart of the headset, but it doesn't last long.

you need to do another factory reset, for everyone, to see if it reverts back, or stays good. please if it goes back bad, you will have footage to compare with the good footage you uploaded also, after the factory reset, was this footage taken straight away? or any settings changed (120hz for example)

It was taken the following morning. I've since updated to V60. Wasn't set to 120hz at the time of this recording. I'm not gonna bother with another reset just yet. Right now I've got a lot of footage coming in through Discord, which is proving helpful all by itself.

Thank you for making an update on your passthrough series, I am just of the belief that meta has made some good hardware over the years but has a ways to go before they have consistently reliable software, I do hope they get there though, also I love the intro now with you putting on the headset and then being green screened in to the intro!

I know it's not a solution but I just wanted to verify it for myself to see if a factory reset did anything to improve it. and the first factory reset did improve clarity and reduce the warping when the phone is close to the face by about I'd say 10 to 15% but nothing as clear as your video and also the video is still grainy with a noise even with a lot of light plus bright screens and lights get blown with white out. After that I factory reset it 9 more times and there were no improvements, some of the resets even increased image warping and I did another reset to reduce it. Very odd. I still strongly believe that the camera quality is inconsistent for all units during manufacturing.

I compared my replacement to the original and the pass through was exactly the same for both. Except the replacement had a single dead pixel XD.

Yeah, in a well-lit room I still can't see anything very well on my phone or PC monitor, it's all blown out - so I'll be trying the factory reset...perhaps multiple times I guess.

I feel like Quest 3's are very inconsistant. You can get one with a deadpixel or more. Very bad mura effect or it can almost go unnoticeable. Passthrough can be a hit or miss. My first Quest 3 was terrible and very laggy, would crash often. Had a dead pixel also. My new one is pretty good honestly. All in all, the Quest 3 is a very good headset for the price. It gives me something good enough while waiting on the Index 2 if it ever comes out haha! Good job on the lighting and keep up the good work man ^^

So you're actually getting black intermittent bars on your screen? I've only seen that when recording a phone through the lens with another phone. I'd try the factory reset and/or escalate it with Meta customer service.

On the IPad and phone you have to lower your screen brightness to see it up close. The screen on your iPad and Phone is too bright for the cameras to pick up everything too clearly. I know this works.

I shit you not! I was just about to finally try this, and my headset had an update before i could shut it off, and when it finished updating, i could see my phone in pass through! Did anyone else get a update. Its still not perfect, but i can see my phone and can navigate it with the headset on! Im stoked!!!

As soon as the quest 3 came out and there was such a stark difference in people pass through quality, I knew it's probably a software issue. Because when people would record the image through quest recording it's crystal clear but you record through the lens it looks terrible. The screen capture should be close to the same quality as the actual thing.

Yes that's what's happening, lines flickering on the screen when using a phone through the headset. I've tried changing refresh rate on the phone but its made no difference. My headset is poor quality and grainy too, even under bright lights/daylight.

I sent mine back cause after a month when I would play games. It would how do I say it. Stutter/ shake so much it would make me sick. But then I'd move the headset it would quit for a min. I never could fig it out. So I se t it back for a new one.

You'd lose it. May be able to back it up through sidequest, but I wouldn't be the one to talk to about that.

just make sure you have cloud saving on in the settings. Game saves auto restore when they are re-installed with this on. You also have the option to restore games from you meta account page@@bringhurstvr

You lose it but when you reset it asks if you want to redownload everything. It’s not like you gotta pay for it again or search for it. If you got backup it’ll load the game saves too.

That's a lot of resets. I'm sure that somewhere in there was a firmware update that suddenly got priority.
