Hey Ethan! I feel you were living my life here and just beat me to the punch by making this drastic change in your life. I'm 32, Korean-American, have a mortgage, was making 6 figures, lived in LA/OC for 30+ years, likes games and anime (How on earth did we never run into each other? Almost certain we have a good amount of mutual friends. haha!) Last year, June 8, 2018 to be more specific, I quit working because I was having anxiety attacks and depressed from overworking to keep up with the rat-race. It felt like running in a hamster wheel. Money was good but I couldn't find the joy and lost my will to live. The vicious cycle had to be stopped to take care of my mental health and started my search to a better life and to make that drastic change. A life that fit me and not the other way around. Couple months later I ran into your video and bawled watching. Mind you, I'm the guy who didn't cry when Mufasa died but I bawled uncontrollably because I could relate to you so much! I've never met someone so similar in thought about living here in LA/OC culture and what the "social norm" is. Another way I could relate to you - Thailand. YOU MOVED TO THAILAND! That's the only destination I went out of the country for other than Korea to visit family. When I was visiting couple years ago I was amazed by the living wage in Bangkok, by how friendly the people are, the culture, there just wasn't enough time to explore a fraction of what the country had to offer. Uhhhh the street food scene though... AMAZING! Anyways - for the past year I've been making a lot of changes to my life. I'm well on my way to move out of LA soon and moving to San Diego for a little. I've already purchased a small condo and will be moving there in September. It's just a trial to see if I want to live settle down there. If not, I was thinking about moving to Thailand too (I kid you not) BEFORE watching your video. Other than that your videos have been helpful to help me understand how a young Korean-American drop everything and move to Thailand. Especially, buying a condo in Thailand video. Sad that I missed you while you were living here. I feel we could've been each others' "close" friend that you didn't have while you were living here. Maybe we can play some Overwatch together or League some time soon! Take care man.
@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 5 жыл бұрын
Wow you sound so similar to me but now I am 36 so that's probably why we didn't run into each other otherwise OC is a pretty small circle considering was in several of them in fullerton, gg, etc etc. But towards my later years I was so involved with my church I was mainly in church circles and also in several of them too lol. Anyways in hindsight maybe a move to a different area will sort things out but most of the other Americans I run across here from even more work life balanced places like the midwest etc still say america is crazy to live in. Great country but it's quite stressful and lonely. I now realize why all the Koreans would complain how boring American life is. You really don't know what you're missing out on until you experience what it is that you're missing out on. I am at a point where it's hard to remember my life back in the states. I had so much of an anxiety attack that I was left unable to move one time just trying to catch my breath so I can pickup the phone to close a sale for a couple thousand dollars which I knew I had to do to pay my mortgage... Anyways I don't recommend you just move cold turkey. Doesn't seem practical. I personally took a 1 year leave of absence from work which most places will accomodate you for. Otherwise they'd have to fire you and you'd collect unemployment which is what my friends advised me to do but I couldn't be dishonest like that personally. I sold most of my stuff but also left the essential stuff in my sister's garage just in case I returned. And thought of it as a one year vacation. Had a blast found an opportunity to buy a condo and never looked back. But if shit hit the fan I knew I always could return. It's a process of letting go... things might be tough but that might be a blessing in disguise cause that's what will push you over the edge and let go of things you could never imagine letting go and looking at life differently. Being humbled and getting a view for life that is a blank slate is what allowed me to make all these otherwise seemingly uncomfortable changes

You have lived a fascinating life, which I feel is what life's about. I have been struggling with the pressure of buying a home, starting a family, working a 9 to 5, its almost like it has all been planned for me in advance. I have been made to feel like a failure from my family for not following that exact path. Completely relate to your story and commend you on making your own decisions, though not popular. Your a true leader in every sense of the word, a true man! Someone that does not go along with the herd, strong enough to stand on your own and make the jump in whatever situation comes your way. I'm looking deep within myself to find that strength to lead my own life as well. Soon I know I too will take that leap of faith to try out new things that could vastly change the direction of my life for the better as it has for you. Thank you for your honesty, it truly helps to see others journey to help find our own. I can now see I'm not alone in the bubble of a world that I've created for myself. I have been trying to find my purpose, something I can be passionate about and follow till the end and I learned that finding purpose by trying to figure it out in my mind was a waist of time. I finally figured out I cant figure it out in my own mind, but that I have to try things out over and over again until I find out what I feel passionate about. Thats what you have done and what I need to do next in my journey. May God continue to bless you on whatever path you choose to take next. Oh yeah and before I forget, great video bro! LOL

Oh man I couldn’t have said it better myself Gabriel and I totally feel you... you’re not alone and I know how hard it is to venture out on your own when so many people have laid expectations on you. Sometimes you gotta be selfish which is possibly the hardest thing to do for some of us. Honestly if I didn’t get sick and depressed from overworking myself and some of the arrangements my family made which I followed didn’t work out, I may have never had the courage or excuse to be selfish and take that journey. I might still be back there grinding away... not saying the solution is for everyone to drop everything and make drastic changes but I hope you get an opportunity to take that vacation you’ve always dreamt of brother!

It's the same for me. When I was younger and I had opportunity to move to Sweden from Thailand and I took it for just to see the world. But it's just the same like when I was in Thailand and I had to start over again from beginning. It feele like I'm stuck inside the box and isolated in a way because me and my mom moved and leave everything behind. It made me wanna come back home to Thailand again. I have been watching your videos to see how to move back to Thailand and how to "live" there. I'm a bit lucky that I still have family and thai citizenship there but I feel ashame that want to move back without achieving anything here in Sweden. I adore you for taking the step to move to a foreign country and start over and now are giving tips on how to do it so I thanks you and wish you luck :)

Ethan, First of all thank you for serving our country for all those years. Amazing. I'm sure you get frustrated with comments about how young you look for your age but believe me that will prove to be advantageous in latter years. It would be interesting to hear about what you did in the military and about your career path in your business life. Hey! Make that great choice of a girlfriend into your wife and life partner. I went to all black schools and grew up moving around all over the US. I was born in Korea too and came to US when I was 7 years old in 1973. I got married at 22yrs old and followed a 24 year career in law enforcement and I am now retired. My biggest mistake was getting married so young pressured by my father to a woman in Korea. If I had waited just a few more years, I could have met a better match in US. I think you are doing a good job in living your life. Keep up the good work.

LIVE TRAVEL ASIA I work at an IT company here in Silicon Valley, Like you, I am a Korean American/Canadian(dual citizenship). I visit Korea numerous times a year to see my friends and parents. I’ve never been to Thailand but just hear so many wonderful things about the country and if could buy a condo there for a price less than a Tesla I am very interested. I do own condos in Toronto and a small studio in Seoul and have fairly decent understanding of real estate markets. As I’ve seen your other video regarding pros and cons of buying a property there, but do you think you can give me an guesstimate in propert taxes, maintenance costs for a condo of size of your’s? I don’t plan on renting it out or Airbnb~ing it. Thank you in advance, really appreciate your time and effort.

I consider myself sort of third culture as well, born in bkk, spent most of my teen years in singapore, came to states for college and been here ever since (in SoCal). Hmmmmm well picking a country with low agricultural costs is key I think. As for gadgets and clothes it only probably effects my lifestyle positively cause it'll only encourage me to not spend money. If there is something I really need I can just get it from the states or in china and use price arbitrage. This isn't an option in the states cause you're sorta just stuck there.... a bit different living in Asia cause a country is only 30-50 bucks flight away and a few hours...

Congrats, on taking the Matrix red pill. My wife and I are there too. I hope others listen to your whole video. In the last part of your video, I can tell you are speaking from your sole. I know, that sounds deep, but it is. To think outside the box, come to the true realization about the system and then decide to live life on your terms. It seems Thailand helps enable it. We are on our way soon also, to find out. Thanks for airing your deeply personal thoughts. And I hope others wake up too.

Thank you. Yes... Thailand does help you... I mean just seeing how everything is different, not having the usual friends and family around you to judge you, having the free time to just day dream and ponder ideas alone are all catalysts to this. Some people get side tracked too early with all the entertainment out here but I was fortunate enough to have finally gotten a breather from the rat race in the states and start a discovery process. I am still in the middle of it but yeah... definitely living with a whole new perspective on life I never imagined a few years ago. I wish you and your wife the best as well :)

I don't know how to say this without seeming a little weird, since you don't know me, but I think you, of all people will understand: I'm going a long way around this to describe it: Do you realize the very small percentage of people in the world that realize they are captive to their nationalistic/capitalistic society, (not only nationalistic/captialistic but cultureistic and propaganda driven, ways/desires) , then realize it and decide to try to live life on their own terms. You are in that small percentage. I think it takes a very intelligent person to realize it. And a courageous person to break free of it. You are both of those. It is an honor to meet you, in this internet space. And on the lighter side of things, I hope you are having the time of your life. I hope to be there, in that state of mind, along with you, soon. Ever think of writing a book?
@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking about it actually but not ready to get that personal yet... I wanted to write down my thoughts so I don’t forget how grateful I should be about my choices but it’s probably too raw and possibly even controversial. I really understand where you’re coming from and everyone who’s as they say woke to this will understand each other but telling people trapped in their boxes that they are possibly living their lives all wrong is only going to be offensive especially because it does come down to personal choice. I thought the best way to help people see this is to just keep my vlogs simple w a good positive vibe so that they are at least open to the idea of traveling out here to find out for themselves if this lifestyle is right for them. I am glad to meet similar minded people on my channel as well :)

I love Thailand and I have been there countless times, due to my wife being Thai. I have only just found your channel and this only the third video I have seen so far. I have subscribed after seeing this brutally honest video. I can tell that it was difficult for you to be so openly honest. And I could not agree more about trickle down economics does not work. It's BS system that governments and the super-rich multi-billionaires want us slaves to believe. Yes, we are all slaves of our governments and our governments are puppets with the multi-billionaires pulling the strings. Yes my friend slavery is alive and well. It's legal slavery, and it always will be as long as the rich keep getting richer and the poor (slaves) getting poorer. Anyway... I digressed, lol. Great video thanks fort he honest and interesting insight into your life.
@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. Yes it definitely took a while for me to open up as we live in a really idealistic society, but my great group of subs have made it easier for me to be more open about myself. And as for trickle down theory and economic policy, I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s the single biggest inequality in America that is largely ignored because the billionaires who own the media companies have successfully pitted the poor people against each other over relatively minor inequalities and our education system fails to remotely educate our youth in finances while they load our brain up w useless mathematic formulas and idealistic thoughts. It’s honestly a losing battle, one id rather sit out but hopefully the videos I make at least bring a smile to peoples lives and possibly motivate them to get themselves out of that enslaved lifestyle. I try not to be political in my channel as I’ve realized debates tend to only polarize people and distract from the real issues but I just wanted to be open about the kind of person I am as a lot of my lifestyle decisions are based on my background in finance and my disdain for how the American system is designed to enslave you in debt and how effective it is in brainwashing people to believe in its necessity

Damn... it's really though supporting a family out here with pay imho... I mean it's all relative cause the cost of living is cheaper out here but there are certain things that are just or even more expensive than the states such as electronics and luxury goods and such... If you've had experience teaching in Korea I think it'll be better there as a teacher. Korean english teachers make the most, since you're korean american you can qualify for F4 visa I think it's called which gives you permanent status and healthcare. I feel like thailand is more for the single scene cause although I mention all the upsides I think you have to be less risk adverse to live out here as there are a lot of uncertainties. That being said however, with your credentials it may be easy for you to get a nice job at an international school and I know a russian guy who landed a job like that from my language school and they are even letting his little girl study for free there. But usually the pay is around 40K for regular full time teachers which is a little over 1 thousands dollars only and even the best international schools, it's rare to see them post anything for over 70K unless you're being directly recruited from the UK or something. If you are still serious about living out here, I recommend you take at least a one month vacation and feel it out for yourself and look around for job prospects. And kudos to you for having a family man.

@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 6 жыл бұрын
Hey man I ve been in your shoes... based on my experience, I wish I had all my adventures when I was younger and opened my eyes to new possibilities. I also don’t recommend you join the Army to find purpose as you’ll find a lot of other joining for the same reason which may make you even more lost. Join if you have a clear purpose. And 8 year contract is a long commitment especially w the way the world is right now. But if you do, I salute you for also sacrificing your life, making a commitment that’ll require more sacrifices in every aspect of your life to serve the country you love and protect the freedom that others are currently abusing without realizing what it takes to have it. And my best advice on that area is never trust anything a recruiter says. Be an asshole and ask for everything on paper and read the 100 page contract. And lastly, you eventually have to put in the time in that system of slavery over there to save up enough money if you want to enjoy the same lifestyle I have. I hope you make better decisions than me and don’t waste your money on stupid big toys or stupid women so that you can either be enjoying life faster or with a greater savings than I did. And lastly don’t look to my channel to answer all your questions as I am still only 35 and still learning myself. Enjoy life brother. The journey, the process of finding the answers, are the best part about it

Hey, Do join the US military. There are no other careers where you can get 30 days pay leave from year one, the pay is very good considering they pay you for housing and food and cost of living differences depending on where you live. So you don't have to pay rent, utilities, and groceries out of you pay. The pay is surprisingly good too. Also it's the only career where you can retire in just 20 years and get 50% of your pay for rest of your life with almost free health care. I presume that you are in early 20s so that means you will have a retirement income in your very early 40s. At that point you can either start a second career or live like a king in Thailand without working for the rest of your life. I retired from the military myself and after I retired, I worked as a government contractor for a few years and when I got tired of the job I just quit. I live in Maryland and have a house in the place voted to be number one place to live in US many times. It is one of the most expansive place to live in the US but, I bought a house with zero down using my VA loan. BC I retired from the military, with my retirement pay and other income from VA, I can afford to live here without working. After about one year of not working; I found out that the hardest thing in the world is doing nothing. So I started to drive Uber. It's the best job for a retiree. I just love the flexibility of working as much or as little as I want, at anytime I feel like working. Only reason I am still living in the states is Bc I have children still going to school. As soon as my kids become independent in a few years; I plan to sell everything and move to Thailand. I think I can live like an Emperor in Thailand and save a lot of money. The reason I am baling on is Bc I want to tell you that joining the US military is a sure way to retire way ahead of your peers.

@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 5 жыл бұрын
I guess I would be if I was rich but I am not haha. I think you gotta make over 100K or something which is a threshold I am way below to have to pay American Income taxes. IRS can come audit me and they probably owe me money thats how little I make here lol. But than again I know friends who make a pretty good money from international companies and cleverly use their IRA accounts and stuff to basically pay less than half the income taxes they used to in America. That's probably why the IRS is trying to crack down on this. Honestly there is no other country I know of that pays more income taxes and receives such little government benefit than an American

Hi Ethan, I am thinking of moving to Thailand too as an Asian American. I lived for 2 years in Taiwan as a teacher in my early 30s. I love travelling. But looking to find a base and hope Thailand or Bali can be an option. I’m a spiritual, laid back person and Taiwan is too fast paced and so is China. I prefer the laidbackness of SE Asia compared to the rat race of NE Asia. So I will not live there. Living in NYC now the rat race is killing me. The only thing I dislike is the exploitation of Asian women by older white men in Thailand. I hope I can avoid seeing that seedy part of Thailand. I will prob move to a calmer part like Phuket and avoid Bangkok. I thought about buying a house in Portugal but now in my 50s I just want to be around other Asians and not stand out or explain my Asian background to White people. Europe is beautiful, lived in the UK for a decade in my 20s but it’s not for non-whites. You are always a guest. When you get older like me you just value comfort and acceptance more as you lack the energy to fake things to fit in. I love the beach and Thailand sounds good.

Hi there. I actually thought Taiwan was laid back but I didn’t live there haha. Me and my gf think of Taiwan as a possible retirement place. I don’t think laid back or acceptance would be the best way to describe Thailand at the moment. But definitely give the place a try for a year or so before you commit to anything. The current increasing requirements for retirement visa along with the rising medical costs has had me personally decide on looking at other places as a base while maintaining Thailand as a winter vacation home

@@livetravelasia I will def try Thailand and Bali out. But I do think moving to Asia as a base would be great. Then just head back to the West for a few months when it’s super hot in Asia.

Wow this is the most interesting feedback I've received on the choice of words I use. Not even sure how to respond to it. I generally don't prepare what I say unless it's a very short video which I can script for and narrate. I'll keep it in mind but it's hard to change habits when you're trying to act like yourself

It's quite incredible that a person who defines himself so "conservative" was brave enough to throw away a well-paid job and a safe and warm life in US, to move to Bangkok. Royal Orchid is fascinating. 😀 I disagree when you say that banking system makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. Even rich people who ignore finance, and don't look after their savings will be made poorer by Banking system. "When a person with money meets a person with experience, the one with experience ends up with the money and the one with money leaves with experience." That's life!

Syncme Android yeah well I was conservative but thailand changed me and I agree experience trumps a lot but it’s the banking system that facilitates it. You have to be pretty dumb to have a million dollars and not know how to put it in a fixed annuity that will return you at least 50k a year guaranteed which is equivalent to what many people make coming out of college. So it’s our society that has determined that someone privileged w a million dollars is trust funds is worth more than someone who has put in at least 16 years in education. And if they have 50k as a base income to start w than they are able to have experiences that the guy with a student debt has to basically slave away to make ends meet. I completely agree experience trumps everything but thats easy for people like us to say when there are others who don’t have the opportunity to even have those experiences. Luckily I was fortunate enough to have relatively educated parents who had the experience to hand down to me some values that put me in a situation where I can stop slaving away not experiencing much but repeating basic tasks 80 percent of my time to pursue experiences I am interested in but not everyone is so fortunate. If we valued labor over capital or at least increased the estate tax so everyone in society is a more equal ground to begin w than I think we can start to talk about experiences and hard work like everyone had remotely the same privilege to have them and not be in a system where you’ll have to dedicate most of your time to being a robot

LIVE TRAVEL ASIA LIVE TRAVEL ASIA I don't know where you got these numbers, the last time you could get 50K per year with 1 million in a fixed (safe) annuity was in 2006 (12 years ago). 10-Year US Treasury have paid under 3% in years, that means less than 30K of GROSS profit per year, and I suppose US citizens have to pay taxes on US Treasury coupons, don't they? I don't think less than 30K GROSS per year is a salary that pays your bills in US nowadays. Anyway I get your point. 😉

Syncme Android well it’s the details. Quite frankly 5 percent is low. Post 2008 you should have put it in a index variable annuity guaranteed principle and you would be averaging above 10 percent. The one we were selling was doing 16-17 from alliance... I might be off on the 5 percent cause that was when I was last an brokerage associate back in about 2011-12 but the one from prudential was paying that... I thought they’d be paying more now? And when I left banking about 2013-14 they were paying an incoming banker 38k a month starting and some were even coming in with an mba for a basic sales job in my opinion. When I was hired as a banker in 2007 even without a college degree, just working my way up from sales with a high school degree, I was paid 40k. Wages went down not up at my bank and it’s one of the largest banks in America! It wasn’t much different with any other large bank either. And this was higher than other state cause I was living in Orange County California. They pay lower in other states and we made ends meet and had some left. I know the past few years have been relatively good but as a banker looking at 80 plus accounts per day and profiling people to sell them something new I can tell you I am quite certain how most people live, what expenses they have, what lifestyle they have and it didn’t matter if it was a doctor or a wal mart employee, over 50 percent of people all overdraw their accounts and live paycheck to paycheck for many reasons but mainly cause there’s not much difference between 60-100k in income as strange as that sounds when you’re paying bills as you said... it barely pays the bills in everyone’s mind cause there is a certain standard of living expected for whatever position you’re in. You couldn’t convince a dentist overdrawing his account that a country club membership is not essential or a fresh graduate that a bmw lease is eating up 30 percent of his income ratio. And it feels the higher up on the wage scale you go, the less time these people had to bother even thinking these things through which was my own experience as well cause I didn’t have any more in my savings making 100k compared to when I was making 50k cause those jobs usually have you working so damn hard you are prone to more vices to let off steam... anyways this might just be Orange County LA Asian American bangker life. It seems other states have better work life family balance but yeah... I enjoy my life out here and luckily real estate prices did good since I bought in 2008 so even with zero savings and a bit of debt at 33 years of age I came out on top and could purchase a home free and clear out here. I paid my own way through college and made it on a pretty avg career path by budgeting a bit more than my piers and refusing to drink coffee or smoking and being called stingy so it is possible to make it in America and I am sure there are many or maybe even a majority of Americans that don’t see life rigged in the states as I do but I am just speaking of my own to help the extreme cases as myself haha. Thanks for the comment and I appreciate the different perspective

People think you're crazy because you did something out of the norm. I don't think many people would give up a six-digit salary to go live in a country across the world to live paycheck-to-paycheck. You did it, you got out of the system, good for you. Regardless of what people say, deep down, a lot of people hate their lives here in the States. It's all about living, eating, breathing work since the 70s. There is no quality of life here, but only for the 1%. For everyone else, it's a fairy tale.

lol actually my political views are probably too progressive when it comes to economics and conservative on some other issues. so yeah I try not to talk about it cause republicans generally think I am a democrat and democrats think I am a republican. That's why it's pretty liberating being out here and not having to chose a side cause at the end of the day Americans are the most conservative in their political views when compared to the rest of the world. People out here are already talking about universal income and Americans think the idea of universal healthcare is liberal... it's sort of a basic right in every country I've been in here for their citizens
