This is the type of invaluable advice that can change a person’s life. There are so many things that we do in life that we don’t like , but it has to be done. If we only did things because we liked them, the world would be a mess. Everything we like, is not always good for us.

Like is a foundation and is NECESSARY to begin a relationship and even a friendship. But foundation is all it is. There needs to be a lot more for a relationship to be sustainable or even reasonable. However, being in a relationship with someone you DON’T like or vibe with is just as bad if not worse.

I've been instilling this into my daughter since she became old enough to like boys. I stress her out about not liking someone off "potential" or jumping at the first chance to be exclusive with someone. I've made enough mistakes to know not to continue that cycle. Luckily she has followed my advice up to this point. It's too easy to like someone, but someone you can't trust isn't someone you will like for very long.

Laughing because I regularly tell me dear husband of a couple decades that I love him dearly but ain’t don’t like him, or his attitude or his behavior, in that moment. I would also go so far as to say we like the idea of things more than the thing itself sometimes, the fantasy of who we could be with that person, or those clothes or that car, rather than finding the best option for our lifestyles and personalities.

I watch this lady named Susan Venker and she covered a topic like this too. We're taught that we need to get into a relationship with someone to know if it's going to work out but most of the time that leaves people with emotional scars and trust issues that lead to even more problems in future relationships. If you "like" someone, just take time to get to know them before jumping into a relationship with them. When I got out of high school and started dating more often, I had guys that would ask me to be their girlfriend after 3 dates.....3 dates! How is that enough time to know someone well enough that you want to be committed to them? Not to mention, when you enter a relationship it can only end two ways. You either get married/stay together or you break up. Why would you want to enter a commitment like that when you don't know someone that well? You're setting yourself up for failure and to build up trust issues.

Thank you for this comment 🙏🏾 I totally agree with you. You're setting yourself up for a disaster if you enter a situation that you haven't learned about it is so true. You have to be careful of who you fill your voided space with in life.

I say all the time that there’s a lot of adults dating with an adolescent mindset. You can’t be 40 dating like you’re 16 or even 26. I separate my LIKE into 3 categories: physical attraction, curiosity, and interest built over time. Few people fall into that 3rd category and those are the ones I pursue or allow to pursue me. It’s saved me time and heartbreak.

Y’all, I’m a 19 year old girl in college and no responsible adult has ever given me this advice. I never thought of it that way. It’s like you see the most attractive person in the world…but what if they’re really a nightmare? Don’t date because YOU see or you want to believe in potential, because you can’t change others. Only God can. Instead, know God and know yourself enough to know what you need and don’t need for your relationships, platonic or not ‼️🙏🏾

The overall message is fantastic and I ride with it. But I do think he's oversimplifying the concept of "like". Functionality (what i think he's emphasizing here) is definitely integral to a long lasting and healthy relationship and should be seriously considered in relationships, but relationships aren't just about functionality, otherwise they could just be entered and operated on like a business, there would be formula for it to be successful but we all know no 2 relationships are exactly alike. "Like" is very vague in this context, is it physical attraction, attraction to personality or desire? If it's any combination of those 3 I believe it's also crucial to a healthy and long lasting relationship. Doesn't meant there aren't moments where you dont "like" each other temporarily as he said, but it is still crucial. Case and point, relationships where people mutually break-up or divorce despite having a functional relationship but they feel wholly unsatisfied. If "liking" each other wasn't important they should have stayed together as the relationship itself is working.

Basically people operate too much based on 1 principle of thought & based off comfort. Critical thinking needs to come back in society. Your partner isn’t perfect & neither are you. It’s about pulling through together even when things aren’t ideal. Commitment is a full time job.

You said a whole word commitment is definitely a full-time job, and it takes dedication. I agree about critical thinking 🎯💯

@@kimb.1950 facts. The interesting key thing I noticed he said also was people were asking certain questions 2:29. That’s also because the fundamentals weren’t done or created properly.
