Such an awesome race. When Fangio entered the pits, he was 30 seconds ahead of the Ferraris. When he left the pits, he was 48 seconds behind... He broke and rebroke the track records on the subsequent ten laps in order to pass Hawthorne in the last one. Truly a dreamed race, and probably the best yet seen in Forumla 1.

In the 10 laps remaining in the race, Fangio broke the lap record nine times-seven times in consecutive laps. That's jaw-dropping just to contemplate…

Paul Zink I believe he knocked about 15 seconds off the lap record on one of those laps.
@VRichardsn
@VRichardsn 4 жыл бұрын
@@joshhodkinson9677 If I recall correctly, in an interview he explained that there was one particular curve where he took it safe. During those ten laps, he eased the brakes before entering it, and as he gained confidence took more and more risks, shaving seconds each lap.

Fangio was already 38/39 during the inaugural F1 world championship season, so he won all five of his championships when he was in his 40s. Today 40 is considered over the hill. Ask Kimi.

@Driv3r Races back then lasted over 2 hs, many close to 3, Fangio's race time for this particular gp was 3.5 hours. Cars had no thermal insulation at all, exposing drivers to extreme heat, particularly on races held during summer such as the 1955 Argentine GP (52 C at track level) which left Fangio with severe burns on his leg. Tere wasn't any on-board hydration system as well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Argentine_Grand_Prix kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3Wmcn6LeamYlZY

His skills were far superior to any other pilot. Actually, he grew up racing in Argentina a category (TC) in which you run long distances and at the time you had to fix your car on your own. Therefore, he raced break closer to the edge (to save breaks) and accelerating smoothly (to save gas). He could and actually knew how to fix his F1 car, that was his main advantage.

In 1964 they invited Fangio to some tests of an F1 of that season. He agrees to go. At a certain point, the team leader asks Fangio to test the car. He excuses himself, although at the insistence he gives in. The flap of the bag is raised and goes up. Half a dozen laps later he had smashed the track record for 2 seconds. The track was Silverstone, the Brabham car and Jack Brabham driver, until that time two-time champion 59-60 ...

Age I do not think came into it, pure mastery of man and machine. Lapping the infamous Nerbergring time after time, with improvement on the all time lap record, for successive laps. Losing the lead, and over 45sec down on the leaders, a huge chasm even back then in 1957, but he out drove the two Ferraris to win the race, on the most challenging race track ever built. That has to be the greatest F1 victory, of any era

As a huge F1 fan this is probably one of the best footage I have ever seen plus the legendary Mr. Murray Walker commenting (by the way I don't know what are they waiting for in terms to name him Sir and I have to tell you I'm from Argentina and I love Murray Walker). Two things: When I first saw Hawthorn and Collins celebrating with Fangio at the end of the race I can only feel a fantastic emotion realy hard to explain. Those were the times of truly gentlemen and both Hawthorn and Collins respected Fangio, "The Old Man" like they called him. In fact those were the times when drivers respect each others drivers and actually drivers gave up cars for teamates, like Collins did with Fangio even when Collins had a very good chance to win the championship. So watching this three gentlemen at the end of the race and knowing how was the end of the story for both Hawthorn and Collins...well I must confess it almost brings tears to my eyes. On the bright side, the 9m 17sec lap record from Fangio that day in the old Nürburgring track is IMHO the greatest fastest lap any F1 driver had ever achieved before or after in any circuit.

Picture this...Fangio is just about 2.5 mins slower in the Nurburgring than modern supercars are, with more or less same power to weight ratios (Maserati 250F had p/w 0.4 ) but with 50 years difference in engine technology and complete lack of aerodynamics from his Maserati :)

I think 7:20 illustrates just how much speed and commitment the man had when he wanted to really smash through those corners. He really connected those turns well and carried a shitload of speed! That line into the inside of the second turn was so perfect it was like a paint brush stroke! A true artist was Fangio.

Not the same reference, barely even close. The track was much different back then, you had the south and north curves, and you had high hedges around most of the track, and many more jumps to contend with. In 1970 the track was cleared of the hedges and many of the jumps removed, and armco barriers installed. Sightlines were very limited compared to today.

FANGIO IS THE GOAT !!

This was the first "real race car" race I'd watched on the old black & white TV,wide world of sports. The German Grand Prix at Der Nordchleife,1957. I was 1 year old. Pop was upset cause he was southern,& stock cars were it. Not for me,sorry. I've won GTP races in the same predicament as Fangio was back then. My step Grampaw drove just like him,being what we called a "runner". What many call "the green hell".I call home. Just like WV roads to me & grampaw. Being German is a good thing...

yeah fangio was great, but don't take too much stock in what Moss says, he's said the same thing about senna, villeneuve etc so...
