Fader Replacement Presonus Studiolive 24.4.2

Replacing fader bank 1 thru 8 on the first generation Presonus Studiolive 24.4.2.
This mixer has reliably served me for 5 years in the studio and out for live shows. Channel 8 fader finally quit working. The volume would only rise a few dB even when I had the fader at full gain. Universal Control (software) would only recognize a very small gain from infinity even when the fader was at full gain.
I removed the faders and determined through resistance testing that the fader on #8 was indeed bad. Wanting to spend as little as possible, I searched for the Alpha B10K fader to no avail.
Presonus sells them in a bank of 8 so I gave up the search for the individual fader and bought the newly designed bank of 8 faders. The new faders are soldered onto a single circuit board whereas the original was soldered onto a top & bottom board connected with a black wire.

Great video, could I ask if you can you recommend a supplier for the 24.4.2 replacement banks? The desk is discontinued so no luck with presonus. I have an issue with my subs and main fader... My main fader is unresponsive and sub 4 is behaving as the main. Any suggestions would be really helpful Thank

We have a 24.4.2 mixer. Im having an issue with the 6 fader crossing to the 5 fader. Im a complete amateur and am not certain how to fix it or to know if it needs to be sent in for repair. Any suggestions?

Hey James, super helpful video! Thank you! Shot in the dark here, my master fader is out on my 16.4.2. I can use Universal Control via my MAC and control the master fader, but physically it doesn't work. If the issue is the same (not asking for remote diagnostic) is the fix similar? Thanks for any advice you can share.

James Very helpful Video .... ive been using my 24.4.2 in a very smoky venue for about 1 year, im now trying to clean it up ... all my faders are pretty sticky , I have found a few videos showing how to clean , trying to be careful as to how I clean ,, any advice would be most appreciated ,,, Thanks again for your Tutorial

Those faders are conductive plastic so if you plan on shooting some spray cleaner/lube in there, you need a plastic safe product. CAIG deoxIT Fader F Series would be suitable.

James, The first 4 channels on my studio live 24 have stopped working. However, the pre-amps are working through the Tascam multi pin outputs on the back. I'm thinking the faders went bad. any ideas? Thanks, Fred

Hi Fred Shaw, sure sounds like it. I would try an ipad on it to see if the fader values change. If they do, then I'd say there is a pretty good chance the fader bank went out on you. If there is no change in fader value, there me be another issue.

Great video --- I'm having catastrophic failure in nearly all 16 channels of my 16:2 --- maybe replacing the fader banks will be the difference between replacing the whole board or not. ..... Now to figure out where you ordered those parts.

Lemme ask you something else James --- ... the left side of my tape in RCA is much lower input level than the right side --- I have cleaned the contacts, switched cables (Several times) and have concluded that its perhaps a failing capacitor on the tape in part of the board --- Do you think this is something I can repair myself? Any advice?

I have removed both side panels and can see the board but it looks like I am going to have to disassemble the entire unit to get to it. Thanks. after a bunch of head scratching I figured it out. for anyone that needs to know: After removing both side like James did you have to separate the upper and lower halves of the case. to do this remove: 1. the tops of the gain knobs (just pull them straight up) 2. the front row of screws on the underside of the unit 3. the top row of screws on the back of the unit 4. the 4 torx screws that are inline with the gain knobs the top should lift away from the bottom of the unit. I stood the unit on its side and 'opened' it like a clamshell (hinged at the top). be careful as there are several cables and wires that run between the two halves. I pulled the grey ribbon and the large white connector to get a bit more work space but left the others connected. at this point you can easily get to the power supply. Replacing it is about 10 screws and 6 or so connectors.

Nice tut James. How about if the bank you need to replace more toward the center. Is there a way to remove the control surface to gain good access? Would you mind naming the price for a bank of 8 from Baton Rouge.

Thanks. My skinny arm can get in there to replace any bank. I did consider removing the surface panel. From my observation, I think you'd need to remove the 5 screws in the back (above xlr inputs), just the top screws on both metal side panels, the trim knobs (they are connected to a diagonally mounted pc), the screws at the bottom of console that go into the silver panel (that the headphone jack is mounted in) the wires to the power supply, the headphone jack wire connector and the ribbon cable that connects to the pc underneath the display.

+crystal ball You can order through Full Compass-in stock---Be aware ch 1-8 is the 8 channel fader bank---the next 3 are all 7 channel faders banks---on fullcompass site it indicates the 7 ch fader is only for 16.4.2, but in checking w presonus it works with 24.4.2 Fader banks are 8,7,7,7 (24 channels, 4 subs, 1 main-total of 29) Cost is around $70 or so....I was able to replace the 7 ch fader at the end of my 24.4.2-not too hard

+Greg Percy , thanks, got it out, , orderd the 8 ch bank was wrong, waiting on new part for 4 weeks now, they are back orderd and presonus wont give up whats left in there stock, but they say anytime now.I was able to drop / tilt the bottom panel about a inch or so, that gave me the room to get my not so small hand in there. tricky slipping the part in with the headphone jack there, but , doable. ,had to use a drop of rubber glue to hold insulative strip in place, looked like they used 2 sided tape.thanks again

@@Anton-du-Fleur I ended up using some from Ebay. SC1009N B10K Mono Potentiometer Fader For Soundcraft LIVE4 mixer 128mm They are the right size and work perfectly. I replaced every fader with these and have had zero issues.
