Knackered means Exhausted. It derives from horses, who at the end of their working life, would be taken away by the knacker to the knacker’s yard, and - hey kids, your horsie’s going to a lovely big farm up state, where it can run around all day eating apples and sugar lumps with neigh more problems in life. Thus, to be knackered means you are completely and utterly done, exhausted. Here in Ireland, knackered is also used for that context of being knackered/exhausted, but knacker is also an insulting and impolite word also used for low-class people, and also used rudely to mock/insult Ireland’s indigenous itinerant population.
