As my father usually says: "FAEN HAN SÅ INDERLIG HØGGE OG SALTE!!!", though there are variations on the ending. Sometimes it's "SALTE OG GNAGA!!!", while other times it's "HØGGE OG SKJÆRA!!!" Other Norwegians might notice that my father is from Hedmark.

At secondary school (many, many years ago) I read this piece about swearing and it was about the fact that the swears need some "power" in them to work. So you couldnt say: fy druen (you naughty grape), since there is no strength in the expression, you cant kindof expell your negative energy with it.

Inka Laine Well to me it just sounds like other words that aren't rude at all, like "merkelig" or "pirkete", meaning "strange" and "picky". "Faen" is often said in a specific way, making it sound quite harsh, but I guess it is just what we are used to :)
