I saw this coming back in the '90s when Bill Clinton worked out the NAFTA agreement with Canada and Mexico. The whole idea was America would somehow become a service-based economy. But no one thought about the fact that other countries can provide these services cheaper. So when India and Brazil and Indonesia and pick a country from here decided to educate people to provide services cheaper the stage was set for this to happen. And the Republicans just accelerated it.

I don't want to be that guy. But I'm going to be that guy. The shortage of tech savvy Americans did not start after Musk slung shit at MAGA. Just wrapping up a 26 year career in IT from field tech, to service desk manager, to infrastructure manager, and finally global change and critical incident manager, there is in fact a noticeable lack of Americans in certain specialty roles. Part of the reason for that is a significant percentage of young American adults of college age are engaged in pursuing careers as rappers, athletes, influencers, KZbinrs, gamers, baristas, etc. I'm not shaming them. They grew up with a substandard public education that just let them move through to protect their "self esteem" assuming they would catch up one day. The were told they were "special" and given awards for literally no reason at all. They were indoctrinated into the mindset that eschewed applying themselves during their education and come away actually KNOWING shit. This is who they are, and who WE are as a nation. I don't have any idea how any of this will shake out, but it will be interesting to watch.

There are plenty of American computer engineers by but they are usually the highly educated which elimates most of the MAGA I have seen out there. However, my father was an Electrical Engineer (and I am talking forty years ago) and there were only two American engineers in the firm he worked for. Most were Pakisatani, Chinese, Indian and there were some from Eastern European countries when it was under Communist rule. He told me they would hire from top schools but on the job they were not creative enough and could not do the work and that those other countries, for whatever reason, turned out engineers who were superior and this was well known throughout the field. After World War II we took the German Nazi scientists and brought them over and they are the ones who created the Atom bomb and our rocket program at NASA. Clearly it is our educational system because the Bakan engineers were white and black Engineers are usually from Nigeria. My nephew is a Computer Engineer and there are plenty of Americans who can do the job. But at the highest levels, sorry, but even many years ago, no. They hire them but if they cannot do the tasks they are assigned they are let go. At the lower levels and IT, our people can do the job and they should get top priority. And those at the lower levels that are being replaced by the H1 Visa people, they are still high paying jobs.

We shouldn't need to pay people 50 dollars an hour just to survive. We only need that much pay because our mortgages and rents are too damn high. Why are they that high? The same companies that are paying people to come over and work are also buying up properties and charging ridiculous amounts for rents and insane prices for home buying. This makes employees have to work longer hours and seek more employment and also do everything to maintain current employment. An endless circle. A similar thing is happening with food, cars and other necessities. It still all comes down to corporate greed. It's like every rich person is trying to compete with Elon and bezos to be in the one percent club . It's not enough to have everything anymore. It's now about being number one with these people.They have all lost their decency. News flash people the rich aren't working harder to achieve this entry into the 1% club. They are taking from the hard working workforce to further pad their pockets . Visas are just another way they can achieve this by paying those poor people pennies instead of you, dollars. Now the same rich people who own corporations are going to get a chance to cut regulations. We will not be able to eat, live, or thrive. All I want to know and talk about with fellow Americans is how the hell do we fix this? Please make a video about that.

If you make $$$ off the international visa arbitrage trade...you have no credibility, you are complicit in that trade, you have a financial interest...who you should talk to is those of us who manage these cobbled together teams that are driven totally by not cost....but MARGIN - how much are we making off this person's back - margin is just like at tariff, slapped on the rate - ideal margin is around 40% - and that is if body is only marked up once, sometimes there are multiple stops to place a resource - so a resource at a $30/hour skill level is sold as a $42/hour skill level...and this scales..so bait and switch and disappointment are built into the trade...these are crocodile tears and faux protestations of empathy - believe none of them - it is all about $$$$$

It has been happening since the 90s. People have to understand, not all Americans choose STEM as a career. The ones who do are well trained and highly skilled with at least BS degrees. During the recruitment process, they are held to a much higher expectation out of college. They are asked to have experienced skill levels coming out of college therefore they struggle to find jobs. The one thing that is not certain is how skilled are the H1B visa workers in comparison to the American engineers who are competing for the same jobs?

Given the availability of almost world wide high speed internet, visas are not necessary. Just hire someone in another country who works remotely. They can live very well on what the company would pay someone with an H1b. I was at a job fair and the recruiter was happy to tell another old guy and I (a not young female) that their tech support was great - and lived in South America.

Not because Americans aren’t skilled, not because Americans are in short supply for that position… simply because American labor is not cheap. And American labor thank the industrial revolution will never be so cheap again. This is why we need to have universal unions and strengthen them.
