Plus why would a book be in danger of being lost if they’re only banned in a single country? I mean yes some books may not make it out of a particular country and any sort of book banning is bad especially for a local people, but wouldn’t most books be available anywhere? I mean in the original novel it’s never really stated where the book takes place but it’s safe to assume this is just how the world is. Other dystopian novels like 1984 and Brave New World actually explain how the world is. Seriously how did this make it past first draft? Edit: just finished the end of the video and Daniel pretty muddy said everything I already did.

Fahrenheit 451, the movie, was bad, but I still have a lot of respect for Michael B Jordan and Michael Shannon for making it. I think they tried to do their best in making this movie, and I give them props for making it. Oh, by the way, as far as the social media aspect of the movie, I actually liked it, because I think what they are trying to say is that people in social media do not have free will of thought, but they are being lead by charismatic people. I think you just need to jump on Twitter to see some of these aspects at work.

I love your fair and and nonpartisan breakdown of the various views toward censorship. This issue ebbs and flows across the party line throughout time, and framing it as an up/down between authoritarianism and liberty hits the nail on the head. First of all I want to say, that’s a very well created review! Personally I think the mechanical hound was cut because it would have been too expensive to create the visuals, wich is a total shame that would have given them more than enough action scenes. Also you are absolutely right on the social media aspect. However I think if they started to censor the internet right at the beginning of it something similar too the state of North Korea could have been achieved.

After watching this I definitely need to read the book again. I don’t quite remember the VR concept from the book, but the way you described it kind of reminds me of this episode of Black Mirror where there’s a dystopian society where the lower class lives inside rooms completely surrounded by screens. I understand why an adaptation like this would want to show something more familiar to audiences, but I still think it would have been better for them to make something more creative and out there similar to Bradbury’s original vision. Just because we have a lot of the technology Bradbury imagined doesn’t mean we should just include normal modern tech. Put a fictional spin on it

Equilibrium, whilst more of a combo F-451 and 1984, is definitely a better place to get a "modern" take on F-451.

@@brettmckenzie5101 I absolutely agree with you there, about the 'combo' between the two. And I would not be surprised at all if that's what the writers behind Equilibrium had in mind when they made it.

I read 451 as an adult. While I appreciate your nuance about the politics of it, I’m still surprised that people don’t notice all the other things wrong with it BESIDES the politics. The misogyny, the tropes, the fanciful and unbelievable trappings around a serious conversation. Also, the girl in the books was fetishized, too. I haven’t seen the movie. And Bradbury’s writing is beautiful at times. But the book is full of contempt for women besides the “perfect child.” He literally describes the society’s lunacy as feminine. And I can’t sympathize with a lead who beats his wife.

I have 4 indoor pigeons as companions. Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. You can't use non stick pans, self cleaning functions on an oven, air purifies with ionizers and ozone, or you will kill your birds. Also things like scented candles, incense, and essential oils, are very bad for them. So smoke? Yeah that bird is deaaad

Just like to point out that the internet can exist in a society that doesn't allow free thought. There are countries in the real world that monitor their citizens, and do in fact arrest people who post non approved speech within those countries. If we've learned anything in the last year, it's that social media is extremely easy to censor. It's much easier to monitor than say a group of people at someone house.

She reveals the codename out of defiance, and a desperate need to have faith that the resistance is smarter than the firefighters no matter what. Haven't finished the full video yet but I just wanted to comment on your point about the internet/social media existing in a society that is opposed to free thought: Considering how Twitter and other social media sites are all concentrated in one part of the world where people share similar politics, pander to the same demographics and have been shown to either outright ban or shadow ban people who don't conform (but have actually done nothing to break their terms of service) - I wholeheartedly disagree. Admittedly, the current state of things doesn't match up to this extreme authoritarian depiction, but I can definitely see the internet existing in a censored and controlled state in the same way we can foresee the mainstream media being controlled.

You say that the book makes its point "extremely well". I'd say that you're wrong about that. Most people who read it (yourself included) always talk about censorship as a main theme. Bradbury was very clear in interviews that the book had nothing to do with censorship but was about the dumbing down of audiences by television and popular culture. It's a great book, I loved it when I read it, but a book that an author writes that is supposed to be about one thing that is constantly being held up as being about something else entirely can't be said to "make its point extremely well".

I’m at 11:13, and I just can’t not comment. The book has an underlying note that all visual media is a simulacrum of stimulus while the written (or spoken) word is actual stimulation for the mind. If one makes a film adaptation of the book, then one must either attack your own medium or attack the underlying core of the original work.

Not to be mean but in a way this is also a failure of the US education system - the director/co-writer is an American and couldn't understand the book's message even though it's mandatory reading in school? Oh boy... It's also one of the more straightforward classics, so I'm double confused.

It's not necessarily that they didn't understand the book. But they thought they could improve on it, make it 'cooler' instead of something you had to read. Whenever a screenwriter or director working on a literary adaptation starts to say, 'Wouldn't it be cool (or edgy or epic) if...' an angel weeps. And, of course, mindless popular drama (TV, to Bradbury) burning away the literary qualities of books is exactly what Farenheit 451 is about.

Ok, I came back to this video because the more I think about it, the less sense the bird DNA thingy makes. Now, I am NOT an expert on genetics and stuff, but I AM a Biology student and have a basic understanding. So maybe someone that knows more than I do can correct me if I'm wrong. (Also, haven't seen the movie so if there is any in-world explanation, I missed it). I'll try to be brief, but a genetic code has 4 possible molecules per "digit" (which humans have labelled A, C, G and T). That, of course, isn't enough to write anything by itself. However, if you combine them by trios, you would get 64 combinations (4x4x4). In fact, thats how proteins are synthesized, a trio of DNA bases codes for a single aminoacid (the components that constitute proteins) which also are assigned an arbitrary letter. The thing is, many aminoacids can be correlated to several different combinations of three, so if you were to use this known code to write books, you would be missing some letters (let alone punctuation marks and spaces, etc.). This issue could be resolved by sharing a code in common, where you ignore the biological function of DNA and just take it as an encription languaje (in which case, why bother giving the code to Canada when you could just have given them the books). The problem with this is that the genetic code has actual functions that keep the birdie alive. Yes, there is a lot of filler space. Enough to write an entire culture of literature, without erratic gaps, without disrupting the vital code that was previously there, and without leaving signals and indicators that werent there, and would be read by the molecular machinery in each cell, causing who knows what random processes to occur and things to be made???? Yeah, I don't think so. This was an utterly pointless rant, but at least if someone gets something out of it, i'll be happy!

When they adapted the Giver, I stopped watching adaptations of books I really love (unless I hear it's great from fellow book lovers). I heard that they removed the wall screens and I was like, "oh, okay. I guess as long as there's interactive VR media it doesn't matter." Then I heard that most of the movie was at night, the wife was gone, and he had a relationship with Clarisse. "well maybe they combined elements to make the book fit better on screen and make it more edgy." Then you said the Hounds were removed too and I am just done with this movie. Have to wait for the adaptation of my dreams I guess. I imagined the wall screens like that Black Mirror episode with the cycling for power and the competition and the Hounds like Ravage from Transformers. They had the resources to make the high-tech censored world of my (and likely all of our dreams) but failed and decided to stick unnecessary threads in (relationship, social media, etc.). At least the 1966 one was good.

Kind of got to disagree with Daniel here. Sure Bradbury wanted people to be free to be racist but he also avidly believed that audio and visual media was creating a dystopia. He died believing the vision of 451 had come to pass.

Not defending the movie, but you can have an opressive goverment, AND internet and social media. There are multiple examples for this around the world. You just need tools to control them... Ray Bradbury was from my hometown and I actually got to hear him speak at our local library about 20 years ago. It was really exciting even though at the time I hadn't yet read any of his books. He was a funny and entertaining speaker. I've now since read Faranheit 451 and I've got to say I actually liked the movie adaptation from the '60s better than the book, as it made some changes that I think actually improved the story, like aging up the girl character to be an adult, so she can serve to be a direct contrast to Montag's wife, who is effectively played by the same actress. I was bummed it didn't include the mechanical spider dogs, but I don't think they had the technology to make that happen in a movie back then. Haven't seen this newer adaptation.

It seems like they tried to pull from Handmaid's tale with the whole "get to Canada" thing and from Blade Runner 2049 with the whole wife-is-Alexa thing. Which, of course, just failed. Like sure, those elements in those stories worked, but you can't just pick aspects out of other stories you like and try to make them work in something else, especially a story that already has source material. Oh yeah, also, the social media thing was so Hunger Games! People tuning in to watch the worst of human behavior.... They really should have just stuck to the book for this one. And yes, where are the damn mechanical hounds?! Would be curious to know your thoughts on the short-lived adaptation of Brave New World on Peacock. I personally liked it a lot better than this adaptation, and liked the changes they made. But lots of people didn't, because it differs so much from the book.
