The speed this car went through the corners is another demonstration why you should focus in suspension and balance over increasing engine power unless you're just doing straight line racing.

Absolutely correct. I used to go for power when I first started... Now I can chase WRX's on a 1.8L Civic up mountains because of cornering speeds. Also makes the car more fun and safe.

Been In some 400-500 Older gen evos like this one and the cornering is rediculous, and even hitting jumps in the road couldn’t even feel it lift nor hit the ground, when you expect a hard impact or some scraping then you land it feels almost like jumping a UTV

I bought a new Evo 8 in 2003 and had it tuned by Vishnu. It had about 425 HP at the wheels running 27 LBS of boost. I used it to do track days and what a blast that car was. It was such a pure driving experience. I wish I'd never sold it. This video brought back some fun memories.

Man I miss my Evo sometimes. One thing I can say that helps combat the short gears on these cars on track is cam, springs, and retainers, basically gives you an extra 40ish kph of top speed depending on tire size. It is a much better solution then using the 6 speed box, they are made of glass (speaking from experience). The 6 speed boxes 6 gears crushed into the 5 speed casing. Another option is Jacks and Shep trans in the states. They have some great options. I absolutely loved this lap, hope you get to drive it a gain with a bit more rev or top end. One other option is a final drive.

i think it really does need 6 gears though, given how close the ratios are. The EVO had a bit more to offer for top speed if it wasnt limited by the gearing. (Edit: depends how far you rev it out, idk what the redline is, but he got up to 260 at 8k at one point, which is reasonable top speed for this track, but the engine does have more to give)

Had a friend that had an Evo 8, bought it brand new, and even stock they handle quite nice. He took it to Road Race Engineering and had coilovers installed, after market wheels and tires, and about the same level of engine prep as this one. One of the most amazing things about it was how precise the steering was on it.

the mr 6 speeds are known to be more fagile than the 5 speeds. I believe thats why mitsubishi went with the 5 speed for the evo X

Nice track weapon this Evo. Looks very planted and also very forgiving, but it would definitely benefit from one extra gear, given the short ratio of the gearbox. I see how helpful such close ratio would be in rallying but not so much on a fast race track

Agree that evo 9 has the short ratio 5speed. Would be better with the uk spec 6speed or the longer ratio 5speed. My evo 8 does just over 140mph in 6th at 6000rpm. The evo in the video was doing 124mph at 6000rpm. That’s quite a difference. The high rpm does help with the ratio though.

I love the 5th gear to reverse lock out in my Mitsubishi, coming from 5th you have to go neutral (3-4 gate) then move to reverse, it won't even grind trying 5th to reverse

I love this build, I expect it will have an amazing lifespan since she didn't make the engine a nuclear reactor, just great quality of life mods and good safety gear. 280bhp is plenty of power to race with when you're not a pro and overall will be a more balanced and enjoyable experience than some of those straight-line rockets!

Yeah, It's very nice to see what an older stockish car can do with modern rubber. The sweet spot for this platform is a responsive 450-550hp. Of course we've seen time attack evos pushing 1000+hp, but a little over stock with suspension and tyre mods is awesome track weapon.

This could be an FQ version...i think this car has more power than 280 if you look at how it picks up speed...280hp won't climb through the numbers like that...I have a stage 4 focus ST225...making roughly 375hp...and her car picks up speed similar to mine.

The rally art edition made around 380hp, maybe with the manifold, intake, and tune it's aroumd there too. It definetly looks more than 300.

Nice one! Like my 7 track cars younger cousin. Looks much more refined than mine I just ripped almost everything out (which I now regret 😂) and seems very conservatively tuned so would be a nice reliable trackday weapon. Also - those gears are ludicrously short! Mine is also 5 speed but can reach around 165mph, so this must have RS box ratios as GSR is much longer.

Love the way she built this car! Very tasteful and smart! I had a 2006 civic si and did the same thing! Stock motor, but aftermarket coilovers, better brakes and fluid, upgraded radiator and cooling package, upgraded camber arms, new bushings everywhere. Thing was a beast and a pleasure to drive. Sold with 107k miles for 15,500 and never one problem.

Great lap, even through video we can see it's very well set up, Misha points and it just goes, no excessive understeer or oversteer. Power was surprisingly plentiful too, a bit longer gearing for the ring would probably just be icing on the cake

Correct me if I’m wrong the evo is mostly the base for a rallye car. (That’s where the280-300hp came from). Also most rallye cars tend to have a shorter gearbox since you won’t reach top speed very often on a rallye ( of course there are exceptions like finland and sweden.)

@@thirteen12 wouldn’t feel as quick with the 4.1 that’s a bit to much for a 2L for a fast track car I think. 6speed is strong if you keep oil temp down. Basically any other evo box would be better for a fast track like this haha

@@5372john6 speed is known to be weak. Most high HP street Evos here in the states run the 5spd or of course built dog box or PPG. I don’t disagree but personally I would run the 5 if I ever actually got an Evo like intended years ago 😅 RWD bug bit me

It’s only 4th gear that’s weak on the 6speed. Americans love mega high power evos with tons of lag haha but that’s not any good for a track car really
