FAIL! | Putting a Starter Solenoid in a John Deere 318. Sorta...

Hey guys hopefully you enjoyed the video! I have to say this was a big fail. But I thought I’d share it with y’all! I believe I’m having a possible battery or key switch issue. Please feel welcome to comment on this video and help! (Information on 318’s). The earlier 318’s (like mine), all have the starter solenoid in the dash tower under the battery tray. And 318’s 83, to 86 or 87, came with the b43g (like mine).Unless, it has a replacement p218. The later models of the 318’s with the p218’s, had the solenoid mounted to the starter. Please someone correct me in the
comments if I’m wrong. And feel free to add information. I’m just now getting into the electrical on these garden tractors myself and need some schoolin too! lol

I always have trouble with the newer replacement solenoids for some reason. The dash-mounted solenoid is better than the starter-mounted one in my opinion...mostly because of serviceability. Serial number 364138 (early '86) was when they started using the starter-mounted solenoids, so some late B series engines did have them. I just replaced the starter and oil pan on my '87 318 and had to search around to find the solenoid-shift B43G starter to avoid changing any of the wiring. They aren't too easy to find.

What I did was I replaced the solenoid, and then ran a separate ground wire from one of the bolts the solenoid grounds to, to my negative connection on the battery. That’s what fixed it for me.

I bought a solenoid just like that from Auto Zone turns out I didnt even need to buy it but it works fine! Mine has a b43g so maybe it's different!

Did you have to get a new solenoid or switch wires around?

It turned out to be a grounding issue

Sounds to me a low battery or the starter getting bad

I actually ended up fixing the 318 about 4 or 5 months later. Bad solenoid

Me and my brother put a solenoid in his 318 runs great now wasn’t getting fuel now it gets fuel but won’t start

PIGGY If it’s only getting fuel when it wants to I’d say it’s a fuel pump or fuel line issue. Could also be your fuel pickups.

GardenTractorGarage we have replaced fuel lines and all that it only runs on reserve

GardenTractorGarage well we figured out it’s missing the line to run on non reserve at first it wasn’t getting fuel to even start after we replaced the fuel lines it was getting fuel

You are lucky solenoid is mounted where yours is......otherwise you would be pulling the engine out.....

As long as you don't have a clue how to troubleshoot an electrical problem...uhm maybe you should...uhm try a new key...uhm or maybe it needs more gas...uhm!!!

Got this one fixed after a few days of studying on it. Turns out it was a solinoid but the solinoid wasn't grounded out well. Fixed that and never had another issue until I sold it a little while later. Learned a lot on that old thing...

You obviously don’t know what you’re doing. Also, that’s a RELAY not a solenoid. Keep buying parts you don’t need. That’s good for business.
