Thanks for sharing the lows Andy, there is just as much to learn from the mistakes as the successes.

Hope you recovered well Andy. Sometimes we all push on when we know we shouldn't. Lessons learnt. A solid long run under the circumstances 👍

that was quite a lot of suffering. I hope you recover soon and take it easy in Barcelona..... With your big improvements in running you entered a different world........after London there might be a general reevaluation helpful.....for now just one remark while getting closer and closer to the physical limits of the body, the imune system gets more and more vulnerable. Germs and viruses are picked up easier and the defense reactions are less successful. Getting a cold or picking up some germs from the kids happens more often and at some point the tndency to stumble from one cold to the next is real. In addition the camera work adds to the problem, specially in the nasty weather we have at this time of the year. Have a great time in Spain and get well soon

Beautiful trails Andy and gallant effort. It is also good to highlight running in places where is more people and/or phone signal, but it could have gone alot worse if you did fall seriously unwell.

Unfortunately we can start taking ourselves too seriously..it is just a hobby after all and when we forget that all it is, is when we push it too far and we get slapped back to reality by illness or injury..hope you feel better soon..

I pretty much just woke up in did the Venice Marathon at Age 28. Probably now at 40, I''d have to prepare a more...Being 210lbs and packing some muscle, wasn't as fast as you!

Hey Andy. I tried to search for studies examining the relation between aerobic exercise performance and CHO/maltodextrin intake (as you showed your preworkout shake is made of maltodextrin) but these don't show any significant impact on the glucose/insulin response during exercise but only a reduction in free fatty acids (FFA). The only benefits you get from it is in anaerobic exercise. It also doesn't help repleneshing the glycogen reserves post-workout. Is there any benefit you get from the maltodextrin drink you found? Maybe supplementing with 60-90g carbs/hr during the exercise would be a better way of managing a stable blood glucose as Maurten data sheets recommend?

Think you had an old video that mentions to keep consistency you need to maybe give up that run on days like that and be kinder to yourself when they do happen. Your journey has helped me and we have to take both the highs and lows. You will still smash Barça!

Andy, Andy, Andy, you are not the only one who has drunk deep of the Peruvian well. What is it about us runners always bullied by the immediacy of now. Why do we think that we have to get the run in coke what may because thermonuclear apocalypse may ensue tomorrow. I had this run far too many times mate.

I was thinking something similar, the sick runner in a training plan mentality treads a line between the hope of, it'll be fine, and the anxiety of what if I miss that run!? The do you train when sick conundrum, it's a perennial debate. I've heard of Olympians who scoff at the notion of taking a day off to others who spend days in bed getting better. The run if its above the neck, not if its below the neck adage is a pretty good one, but fever? Yeah, rest for days if you need to.

I'd like to say that we should all be grateful you made this mistake as we can learn from it and avoid it ourselves, but the truth is, we'll still all make it. And repeatedly. Much respect for going to the effort of showing all splits and Strava runs in km's and miles. That shows care.

When in doubt...we've all been there. Recover hard, you'll bounce back. Take it easy in Barcelona, keep the focus on London. My 2hr 45min long run this past weekend was in triple layer wind gear (-12c / -18C wind chill) and spikes due to ice and snow. After not running in spikes for nearly 2yrs I had to take them off halfway through the run as they were just feeling way too foreign. I'd kill for your training conditions (well almost LOL) Only been able to run 118km out of 476km outside so far this year. :(

The way I see it, one in ten runs will be what I call a “bottom 10%” run. I feel terrible, I wonder why I’m even out there, I just want it to be over. On the flip side, one in ten runs will be what I call a “top 10%” run, where I feel amazing. And running as often I do, in any given two week span, I’ll typically have at least one top 10% run and one bottom 10% run. What’s worse, I usually get at least one bottom 5% run a month, and every two or three months I get a bottom 1% run. I try not to let those runs bother me, it’s just the inevitable laws of averages hitting home. It did get frustrating when I had a bottom 1% run on race day though. That happened once. But I’ve also had a top 0.25% run on race day, so I can’t complain too much. 😂

This ⬆️⬆️👍 I have had a terrible run this morning after no long run the weekend just gone and just two short easy runs which felt dreadful. Last Thursday I ran a great and very well controlled session. I feel totally wiped out these last few days. The only session which really counts is race day. I have only had approx 5 races over the last 3 years that didn't go quite to plan. Only one of those 5 raves was my main focus and weren't just part of a build for another race where I still feel that I ran well and had a good workout.

Tsk tsk tsk Andy!!!!!🤦🏻‍♀️ It just goes to show doesn’t it how easily we can fall into a frankly stupid training error, even when we know better, even after years of experience !! We all do dumb stuff from time to time , I know I do, and it’s a good reminder to ALL of us!!!! DO take care of yourself and get well soon!!

I could tell by your facial expressions you weren't having a great run. Still, your splits were pretty darn good. Usually after a temperature / fever like that I try to take a few days off or keep it easy. Probably part of it is that you felt you had to do a YT video, which I totally understand. I loved the scenery and it looks like a really nice trail to run along. Question: A lot of sports drinks and such contain sodium / electrolytes. With your homemade stuff, do you account for that? I've found electrolytes are so important on the longer runs. I seem to perform better with the Tailwind or Gatorade Endurance, for instance.
