Redemption is the second longest running TCG. I've been playing for 13 years now. It's been my favorite TCG for a long time. Fortunately, it is still in print, but they only push out one set per year because they are a really small company.

Redemption CCG is still going! In terms of popularity (based on the number of tournaments held each year) it peaked between 2005 and 2007, started to decline after that, but it kept going and recently has begun to grow again. The past few expansions have been selling amazingly well as many former players are returning to the game after not participating for many years, and many players consider the two most recent expansions the best the game has ever seen. Here's a list of all the expansions produced for Redemption: Unlimited (the blue packs in the video) (1995) Prophets (green packs) (1996) Women of the Bible (1997) Warriors (1999) Apostles (gray packs) (2001) Patriarchs (yellow packs) (2002) Kings (2003) Angel Wars (2004) Priests (2006) Faith of our Fathers (2007 & 2011) Rock of Ages (2008 & 2011) Thesaurus ex Preteritus (2009) Disciples (2010) The Early Church (2014) The Persecuted Church (2015) Cloud of Witnesses (2016) Revelations of John (2017) In between some of those expansions, there have been 5 starter deck sets (two 50 card decks) released as well. The one in the video was the 4th starter deck set (the G & H decks). The most recent starter set is the I & J decks.

Hi Duane, I can say for certain that not everyone who plays is a Christian. While the majority probably are (including the primary team of designers and playtesters whom I know personally), I know of several players who are atheist, agnostic or hold other beliefs. No Biblical knowledge is required in order to learn the game--though a basic understanding of certain things (such as which books of the Bible are from the Old Testament and which are from the New Testament) can make things easier to grasp as one learns the game's interactions.

Hey Alpha Investments! I know a few people have commented this already, but Redemption is still going, and going strong. It turns 22 next month, making it the second oldest trading card game still in production after Magic: The Gathering itself. I've played a lot of trading card games, and Redemption is my favorite. It's notoriously hard to pick up, as there are a LOT of rules- judging from your reaction to the rulebook, I think you got that vibe. It's so worth it, though, because it allows the game to be deep and creative and a whole lot of fun. If you're curious to see how the game works, I have a series of videos on my channel called Welcome to Redemption. I also take a quick look at the history behind the game in my introduction video. Take it easy!

Me and my friends played Battletech a fair amount. I named my deck 'Clan Rabid Lemming', used a bunch of cards that had Alpha Strike and pilots who gave pretty much the equivalent of trample so that, while my mechs usually died, I only needed two or three to attack with any degree of success and I could usually get a win. Our LGS even had a weekly Battletech event, very FNM-ish. It had really good support for prizes; everyone who entered, regardless of how well they did, got at least one booster pack (and the winner won around 8 or 9). Had good attendance too, I'd say close to two dozen people showed up regularly. Anyhow, it was fun, and had an expansion that I remember, but after a time it just seemed to die; couldn't tell you why. But yeah, I still have several of those sweet black w/ red pips six sided dice, makes me happy to know that some part of the money I spent on that game is still being out to use whenever I pull those out for my weekly RPG group.

Redemption CCG is a very niche game but it is still around. I used to play in the early 2000s and even attended 3 Nationals tournaments among other Regional and State tournaments. They are still printing cards. Rob Anderson is the President of Cactus Game Design and I had an opportunity to meet him and the inhouse artist Doug Gray who drew a large number of the cards from the middle sets. There are currently 19 different sets. I stopped playing at set 8 due to our playgroup falling apart. It is still the only real Christian themed CCG around. I hope to be able to resurrect a playgroup here after I open my store later this month. Due to it being a Christian themed CCG it isn't mainstream but a lot of thought and game development went into it. BTW, having played both MTG and Redemption I can tell you that there are 0 similarities to the 2 games. All cards are based off of Biblical references and each one has the Bible reference printed on the bottom of the card that pertains to the card. I loved playing this game because I am a Christian and I love CCGs so it fit nicely. It just doesn't have the mass following that MTG or Pokemon have so playing is a bit more difficult to manage. If you have any further questions feel free to shoot them my way and I will answer them as well as I can.

I played Redemption. I thought it was and is a solid game. The mechanics were solid. Steal your opponent's souls with you bad guys and rescue yours with you good guys. Cards had references to scripture. I remember Jael's Nail and wondered how the art matched the reference. Looked it up and was WOW right to the head. Fun to play. I think the religious connection was a draw back for a lot, not me.

I would be very, very reluctant to call Battletech a "failed" game! It had two editions and four or five expansions, and it did pretty well while it was out! I've been playing all sorts of wargames and CCG's for three decades, and in all that time the most crowded event I ever attended was the release of the first Battletech CCG expansion, which had over a hundred people. The game died, because, well... FASA died. The issues were not with the game, but with the parent company and the rights. As for the game itself, it was a hell of a lot of fun! Having been designed by MtG creator Richard Garfield, it took that game and added some concepts into the mix like having your library be your health, being able to attack everything on the table, units having speeds and structural damage that needs to be repaired, the core lands giving the player special abilities, etc. It was really good, and it's a testament to its quality that it remains the only CCG that I still dust off and play with friends every now and then. :)

I loved Battletech. The board game it is based on is still one of my favorite wargames. I still have about 1k cards, and friends who remember it fondly. It plays similar to magic, but with a grindier feel. Player damage is dealt by milling rather than to a life total. You can spend multiple turns paying for expensive cards, but damage carries over as well, and even lands can be killed with enough damage.

I really enjoied Battletech because I love the franchise. I am glad that it failed in some ways because of how cheap it is to pick up. Instead of combat damage and life points, you mill the top of the library (stockpile). The fastest cards (think mono red burn/haste) were banned. There are no combos like magic I am aware of because you can't make unlimited resources or loop things. i have my collection and buy lots once in a while and play when I can with friends. It is fun.

I had Star Trek cards from when the game first came out, but recently have bought more and gotten back into it. I built every faction a deck, so you just pick one up and play. Borg, Federation, Romulan, Klingon, Non-Affiliated. I've also found that if you set up quadrants and instead of a single line, make a + and the game is much more fun. You can also place extra space off the original "arms" and make extra branches of reachable space. Oh and always play by Red Alert rules, makes the game 10 times more fun!

That's awesome! I love the game and agree playing as if Red alert is in play all the time is the only way we play now. It really speeds up the game play. We have a similar sort of play style with a deck constructed based on each affiliation Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Bajoran, Cardassian, Ferengi, Dominion, Borg, Kazon, Vidiian, Hirogen, Non-aligned/Maquis, etc. Each deck was built using a hybrid of Magic: The Gathering's commander rules for at least the personnel, ships, outposts so only one of each card (even the diamond ones). Then we would use a modified rule of no more than 4 cards for events, interrupts, objectives, incidents, etc. It made the game a lot of fun and kept the power levels in check. The quadrant idea is a very good idea! We would take turns placing locations and then move to dilemmas. During the dilemma phase we eventually went with random seeding so have three piles: one space, one planet, one that was a hybrid of each it sped up getting the space line set to play. Then we would shuffle them up and put about 6-7 of each type under each of the missions, with a fourth pile being for our individual Artifact cards to get at each mission where able. Really the only card in the game to stray too far from the rules described above was the gold-pressed latinum specifically only for the Ferengi deck, where they are allowed no more than 10 as the deck focuses a lot around using those. Each one we tried to focus on the strengths of each of the affiliations and made for a flavorful way of playing the game. We banned the Q's tent and all side decks that weren't the initial space line setup as they could largely imbalance the overall game since it can be difficult to have found/own enough of the cards needed for each of those. Glad to hear there are a few other people who play it! The Star Wars cards were fun as well, but the deck design was too limiting since you could only play as one of two sides. Still love that game too and will get a rare chance to play with some friends. But the the Star Trek CCG sees more play from a variety standpoint, despite some complexity issues due to the numerous card types introduced with nearly each subsequent set. This was why we ended up having to simplify, ban, and basically use a house rules variant to play the game.

I picked up some redemption back in the day! Tried to playing it once and the cards have now just been sitting in a box with my marvel cards doing nothing.

I played it when I was in high school. It failed because it was so insanely complicated that it was too hard to teach to other people. I also got to meet the guy who created the game. He was like 500 lbs, and yeah he said Magic was his main influence.

I grew up in a somewhat large church and went to a Christian school until about 5th grade. I had some friends who played Redemption, and I used to get the cards from book fairs and Christian book stores. The rules of the game were beyond my understanding but I liked to collect them like Pokémon cards. I'm not really religious anymore but looking at these now it is a pretty impressive product they created with that game.

I loved Battletech but then I started playing MTG😉. The art in Battletech was awesome. Another old CCG I lived was Deadlands, you battled by playing a hand of poker.

Redemption always had a niche following. The game was sold in local game stores alongside Magic, and many of the other CCG's available at the time. I remember that many people who actually played the game found the gameplay enjoyable. I actually had a set, but gave it to some students of mine when I began dumping old CCG's (Doomtrooper, Wyvern etc.). It appears that the fourth edition of the game is available from Cactus Game design.

Making a religious themed card game is actually genius. There's a huge preexisting fan base, the lore of the IP is extensive with lots to utilize. I'm surprised I never heard of Redemption.

I got a pack that I got at Electronic Boutique back in 96 or 97 and I've been trying to sell it forever, even got a Victor Steiner. This game must be dead and forgotten. I love Mech stuff though.

If you're seriously asking, DM me or drop me a way to contact you and I will dig it out, assess what I have and it would be a "reasonable offer" type of situation. I have quite a few 5000 count boxes full of various "old" CCG's. Battletech, Wildstorms, Overpower, Wing Commander, MTG, The Crow, Xena, Strar Trek, Star Wars and many more. Some I have more of than others.

I love these old card games. I own a lot of them; some bought at their peak, some bought from discount bins. Battletech was one of the better designed classic CCG's. A good candidate for an LCG reprint like Doomtown and Netrunner got. Thanks for this video. I think I'll try to get a game of Rage happening at my next game night.

RUDY! Nice video man. I played a lot of Redemption back in high school. I still have a few thousand cards. I'm actually working on designing a new Biblical card game. It's the passion project that I work on in the background :).

The majority of Battletech players simply preferred to play the original tabletop Battletech.
