Panini had to kill the Dragon Ball Z game because Bandai (the license holder of Dragon Ball merchandising) was releasing the Dragon Ball Super game. DBZ TCG was pretty darn good game with unique mechanics based on a successful CCG made by Upper Deck. There's such a passionate following for the game that there's an active online community that still plays the game and the original CCG it was based on.

I have a question/request for you Rudy. You often bring up companies needing to care about the secondary market and individual card values and collection values and such. I was hoping you could make a video actually going into detail about how a company would do that. I'm not sure how a company would go about it and i'm very curious to learn more about it. As always, great video. Thanks a lot! Keep up the good work.

just a very basic way would be not to print an excess amount of cards. like anything, the less there is,the more you can get for it. also designing the card game so that people will want to play it for years to come insures card worth, because you created a market to sustain said cards.
@bdpc-dk2xb
@bdpc-dk2xb 7 жыл бұрын
He kinda said it in the video, make the cards have value. Basically you have to make the game fun and interesting enough to have player base. Then you need to have rare cards that will have value. They need to be good enough to play and be desirable for people to pay a premium for, but not so crazy they completely break you game and upset your player base. At the same time you have to have the self control as a company to not go crazy with printing and devalue your product because you produced too many.

Konami doesn't give two shits about the secondary market with yugioh. I have actually had a rep from konami explain that they only care about moving product and having players move on to the "next best thing" through power creep and bannings. And they reprint cards so that "everyone has access to them".

As someone who got into L5R closer to the end of the game, the biggest failure I saw was that they went through significant rules revisions basically every "block", which meant a lot of relearning/unlearning every year, older cards had functional changes due to being designed under different rules sets, etc. Trying to get everything to work properly together was a huge pain. There was a fan -made format the last couple of years that was basically L5R's answer to Modern, and would've been really great if not for all these issues. On top of that, AEG has shown in recent years that they really no longer have any interest in being involved in collectible/expandable, competitive games, and are happy just getting by on their re-skins of Love Letter and other, cheap, simple card and board games. Which is fine, but being around for not only L5R sinking, but also their gross mishandling of the relaunch of Doomtown (the original being my 2nd favorite game of all time), it was rough. I went from a big supporter, to having absolutely zero confidence in the company in the span of a couple of years.
@orionpax21
@orionpax21 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and L5R fell into the same trap that the majority of the TCG/CCG market has fallen into over the years. They always focus on those kinds of bigger, regional events, generally similar to Magics Grand Prix tournaments. Those are never what drives a competitive game. Its the smaller, local, usually weekly events that do, like Friday Night Magic. That's what sells product and helps hold secondary market value, not to mention it keeps your players interested and invested in the game. So many of these games don't want to put in the effort on the ground floor to build a player base, and think they can just bring people in for these bigger events. Cuz its worked so well in the past for games like VS System and World of Warcraft. Ugh. L5R only held on for as long as it did because of its devoted fan base from the earlier years of the game, when the company actually cared about it. I hope FFG do a decent job with it, but they have their own issues with building and supporting their games, not to mention the inherent problems with the LCG format.

If they wanted to do that, they would've already done so. Releasing a standalone shaymin tin would piss off a lot of actual players, not just investors. Dragon Ball Z Trading Card Game was originally created by Score, then got shut down and then revived by Panini. Only a few weeks ago Bandai took the rights back to the TCG and shut down Panini's version of the game. As far as I know, the game was quite popular and the Panini version was very well balanced.

for the ones who were asking themself what "panini" is, It's a huge italian sticker company, that used to produce stickers and albums (sold through newsstands) primarly for italian soccer league in 1960's. at the day of today, you can find something like 10 different series of stickers, from the youth's editions to adult collector editions.... just so you know ;) cheers from a BIG italian fan

You should start buying up Yu-Gi-Oh then. box value is terrible. They release product up to 3 times a month. Can't even build a deck before the deck is old and dead. If not for the kids who grew up on the cartoons this game would already be dead. Not to mention the difficulty dealing with customer service and OTS.

Dan V And YGO eclipses Magic in term of sales. Funny how that works. Hell, Yugioh Duel Links just got its work wide release only ~a month ago and is already more popular than MTGO. Not that I think Yugioh is better than magic necessarily. Rather is just goes to show how terribly incompetent Wizards has been and how Magic has been so successful despite them for the most part.
@vindixen358
@vindixen358 7 жыл бұрын
Jon M More popular than MTGO isn't a high bar. When you have vastly superior, high-quality digital products available, namely Hearthstone, Eternal, Hex, and PTCGO, the fact that WoTC has kept the old dodo around this long just blows my mind.
@Luckingsworth
@Luckingsworth 7 жыл бұрын
VinDixen That's the problem, it SHOULD be a high bar. And keep in mind I am talking about a game in developer for maybe a year or two now versus MODO which has had two decades to progress. The card game Yugioh is way more successful than the card game Magic. Not just the digital versions of the games.

I played the CCG Tomb Raider with a friend well after it had failed. At a card shop there was a box for sale cheap with some decks we bought. L5R was a great CCG. I remember when it was popular, I even placed top 8 at one of their versions of regionals with a Scorpion dishonor deck. I still have most of my cards for the game and it was a ton of fun to play. The game died for me when they removed/changed one of the major factions I played, the Shadowlands, for story purposes. Also I bought a little of that Tomb Raider when it was on clearance, couldnt find anyone to play unfortunately.

L5R was a solid CCG, and the RPG side of the game was pretty solid too. The mechanics were a lot different and it was neat to have multiple ways to win and certain houses were better at winning in different ways. I think it boiled down to how the property was handled and I don't recall it having the same large scaled events to grow the base as MTG did. Also when are you going to talk about OverPower? :D

Did you ever buy into "Battle Cards"? It was like a CCG where the cards you used had little 'scratch-off' circles so you could only use them once. And like the tomb raider game, they ran this big promotion where if you collected certain treasure cards and mailed them in or whatever you had a chance to win actual treasure? Or something? Good times.

I believed that WotC just didnt feel like putting up with two different card games. When they switched it over to Kaijudo they somehow managed to market it event worse. The Kaijudo anime was an extra special level of dumb. Its a shame because Duel Masters is a fantastic game in terms of balance and mechanics.

I play Tomb Raider CCG too - I have a pretty good Atlantis deck made up. It's one of the few CCGs that you can play alone, so it's good for collectors who can't find a friend to teach the rules to. It also actually uses the spelunky mechanics by being a pseudo-board game where you draw cards from a level deck on the side to randomly generate a level, complete with traps, monsters and puzzles.

Yeah I remember the Tomb Raider game. I have a few of the starter decks and some sealed packs kicking around somewhere. PanZ died this year. Bandai who hold the rights to DBZ are coming out with a version of IC Cardass for North America, thus Panini halted their game. It had a pretty good following some real balance issues though. Which IT was just a rehash of ScoreZ from the early 2000's

Glad to see your still increasing your position on The Pokémon sets, I think your pretty spot on with your timeframe as well. Glad to also see some different content was really excited for the first one you did and this one as well kinda helps chop up the mundane and gaps with in magic all together and also doing videos like this educates folks what to look for and what has been in the market, I remember Wyvrn (hope I spelled that correctly) and off the top of my head I can't think of the vampire game suddenly and those where flashes in the pan as well, I remember stocking these cards at the KB toys I worked for.

Panini majors in sports cards and just use their cocky arrogance from making a killing on the NBA,MLB,NFL and NHL and then bring it into a world of trading card games and knowingly knowing that these genre of cards will be complete shit and hold no value at all, they fucking still sell those boxes for $70-$100, that's just total fuckin arrogance.....

I liked the nightmare before Christmas tcg. I bought a case of the main set for 72$ and the expansion boxes for 10$ each. It's got a good print run you get most of the rares from a box and you don't need for of for a deck

My friend and I probably spend close to $1000 on the Score Dragon Ball Z cards when we were growing up. Between the two of us and spending that much money we had 4 ultra rares. Eventually I traded him my DBZ VHS collection (which wasn't much) for our combined collection. Fast forward to our mid-twenties I sold the cards to him for $20.

I've been selling cards since 1996 and I sold a little bit of everything even if it's something I know nothing about. What I heard about Dragon Ball Z not doing well is because they have many cards that can't be played. There are a lot of popular cards that required another card in order for it to be played. The problem was that other cards needed was never made and people got pissed and lost interest cause the next set and the next set didn't have those cards.

Holy shit! RUDY! Back in 2005/2006 when DBZ was at it's height the Ultra Rare Goku was actually valued higher than an Unlimited Black Lotus! I still remember when DBZ made the biggest blunder a CCG could make which is change the back of the card and force people to play with opaque sleeves to hide the backs of the cards. All because they had to expand to GT. I could talk for hours about this game. I loved it, went to the World Champs at Gencon one year for it. Crazy! It was a great 1 vs 1 CCG back in the day. I had so much invested in it with promos and ultra rares and then it all fell apart. I still have all my decks and cards just cause it's not worth selling them for pennies of what I paid for them.

I thought the tomb raider tcg was neat. It was interesting and I liked the idea of the "single player" version you could play. I'm not surprised it didn't make it. It was one of the zillions of tcg/ccg Magic clones that came out in the 90's. If you ever sell some on eBay post a link. I wouldn't mind picking some up for old times sake.
