The only way I'd say my parents failed significantly is that they purposefully ignored my obvious pleas for help to get me out of my mission. That caused me a lot of deep trauma I still deal with to this day

@@jennifercadle8393 lots of reasons but I'll try to simplify. 1. The mission field itself was not at all what I was told it was going to be. I was sold propaganda and the church lied to me. It was more like a sweatshop pyramid scheme than an environment of service and love. 2. In general, I felt an overwhelmingly instinctive feeling that I was in a very dangerous environment. 3. In my first 6 weeks I nearly died of a 104° fever, and the church didn't let me go to the hospital. 4. I was being consistently sexually assaulted by my second mission companion. 5. Everything we were doing felt incredibly unethical. Especially the way we manipulated people into being baptized. We'd literally force ourselves into people's homes. I was forced to baptize pedophiles and other terrible people. Generally forced to go against my own internal sense of morality and principles or else I'd be punished. 6. I immediately started to develop the most intense depression I'd ever had in my life and I always felt on edge. To this day I deal with severe PTSD and constantly have to make a game plan of how to escape a room or building, etc 7. I was nearly murdered in the mission somewhere between 7 and 12 times. 8. We weren't given sufficient sustenance. I was malnourished and got sick a lot. The list goes on and on. My cousin says it was like the Sea Org from Scientology

@@jennifercadle8393 oddly enough, the MTC was fun. If I had only gone there, my testimony would've been bolstered. The mission ruined it. The church can't help but take things too far. It's always unsatisfied and wants more from people
@reaper3516
@reaper3516 Жыл бұрын
If this is how you view the mission experience it's probably better you hadn't gone. You wasted your time and the Lord's time. What would have been different if you'd gone to the MTC? Having fun? Goofing off? The MTC is very strict id say more so than the mission. If you're worried about rules and micromanagement then you have failed to see clearly the purpose of a young man or woman serving the Lord. Of course missions are hard. Very challenging. But that stretching allows for much growth. Testimonies don't grow. Faith does. Testimonies are gifts from the Lord that bolsters faith allowing man to pierce through doubt and unbelief.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't feel so bad about leaving the church as I do about how my parents feel about it. I don't want them to think they were awful parents. In fact, the fact that they raised me to pursue knowledge means they did something right.

I guess I should be grateful. My parents were so strict and limiting, the church was so judgmental and ridiculous, seminary teachers couldn’t answer even the most basic questions that I was inspired to leave the church at 13. By leaving, I meant no longer taking the sacrament and ditching the classes (only to go home and find my father on the couch watching football). I dug the stories of Christ, but the hypocrisy was too much. God isn’t a petty human. God is love.

This is so accurate. I remember my mom saying what did I do wrong when myself or my brother left. Everything is extremely internalized and she felt that she failed as a mother so the “burden” is on her. @Wheels_ Unlimited Exactly...different church same thing! Pride goeth before a fall. So,so sad! Parents Need to let their kids learn from their own mistakes. In my case...my church community living situation disintegrated before my eyes. I had to move. Had sold most of my possessions (forced to)... I never found out shy the divide happened. However, many of my church acquaintances went far away from the fellowship. I held on to what I had learned feeling it was valuable. My parents and most of my "church friends" are not here anymore...my parents too. I am wondering why am I still here? I Have learned thru my life...things rarely remain where we put them when we're young! (priorities) Things change...many times you'll see...God is wise....I am Not!

My mom left the church first. I was upset. Didn’t understand why. But then I met with the new Bishop. Ran out of his office sobbing. I called our stake President and he told me the same thing. No food help unless I attend every Sunday, pay tithing, take self reliance classes and hold a calling. My health is not that good. But being 38 people don’t think about that. After I hung up with the stake President I was crying and that’s when I had my first heart attack. My Drs said it was from stress and my genetic disorder. No one has called or come by. Not one friend from the church. 5 other families have left because of this new Bishop and all these new rules. I can hardly take care of myself and my family … I can’t work for the church for free and HOPE my children can eat.

So sorry you are going through this. There are other religions out there that will help without putting those demands on you. I've gotten help from baptist churches that I am not a member of many times and they don't push you to attend or pay tithe. My mother went to them for help to get my stepfather help for addiction, the next day they where not allowed back into the church, he died from overdose. This mormon cult is just that and they don't care about the people, just money and appearance. Get out while you can and find God in another church.

Honestly I feel like this is accurate to most situations when it comes to difficulties between parents and adult children, especially with all of us that are growing up and realizing the ways our parents have treated us are not healthy or acceptable and when we try to tell them they hurt us, they immediately go on the offensive and try to deflect. They often try to frame their children as being ungrateful or mean for blaming them etc. so they don’t have to face the fact that something they did was damaging to their children. So many parents simply do not have the emotional intelligence or maturity to face their mistakes when it comes to their children and that’s why so many people now have such distant relationships with their parents. We won’t tolerate it anymore and they refuse to acknowledge their faults.

OMIGOSH! This is so spot on! My son came home from a mission to Moscow Russia intent on getting excommunicated, which is what happened. It broke my heart. I HAD FAILED. Now 23 years later I'm 100% out! Gratefully, my son is glad he got to have the experience of going to Russia, and the lovely people he met there. Unfortunately he has completely turned away from Jesus. Another son went to Peru, and "stayed the course" for 30 years after he came home. However he left about 15 years ago, but with a firm and growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and has helped me see the false LDS doctrine. John, thank you for this excellent video and explanation.

When me and my siblings were teens having doubts and not going anymore it was bad for my mom. She was so sad for us and it came out as anger. When we became adults she was able to understand that it wasn't something we wanted and that was that. She now handles it a lot better although believes deep down that we all believe in the church and will come back. I know a lot of people in her ward look down on her for her children leaving the church. So while she doesn't see it as a failure, they do and judge her for it. I know a lot of parents in the church that emotionally manipulate their kids into staying. Lds wards are like families, that are stuck together but are so shit to each other secretly.

I married a devout Mormon from El Salvador and I had to convert to marry her. I have gone through the motions in the church just to keep the peace (I myself am Methodist). I now have a restraining order against or for abusing my daughter, as she has totally gone off the deep end. She is following this Mexican who she thinks is Jesus Christ, (who threatens my life via Facebook, mind you) and she is in her own world mentally. She has been spotted around town in a Burqua-like outfit talking to herself. It's just a mess, but my main concern is divorcing her and keeping my 3 kids safe and away from her. The Church really affected her upbringing and instilled in her a lot of guilt. But I tell you, after being in the Church for 20 years now, it's difficult to step back and ask yourself, what the TRUE Church is since the LDS churchs whole foundation rests upon themselves thinking they they have cornered that market with their product. But I am still looking.

I have children who have left the church and I'm not sad and I definitely don't feel like a failure as a parent. I'm very proud of my kids and trust them to do what is best for them. Both of my children that left the church thank me profusely for providing them with a safe and loving upbringing which included the church. The reason I am proud of my children is because when they chose to leave the church they carried with them the most important aspect of "Mormonism". That is they love all people and do not invest their time into talking negatively about other people's faith and beliefs....as is done on this podcast.

If you raise your kid to be a happy, intelligent, productive person and they decide to, say, live on the streets, or don't want to work, or take drugs, etc., as a parent you will feel like you have failed parenting that child whether you have ever joined any church or not. You seriously need to take responsibility for your own life and actions and thoughts, and STOP blaming everything else for your failures. If you DONT GET YOUR KIDS OUT OF LDS --> THEN you really have failed Ask yourself? Am I guaranteed eternal life? No - it’s works based. All our best deeds are as filthy rags & could never get us eternal life - no religion can! Otherwise why did Jesus have to come and die In Our place - we sin - he paid our penalty Jesus of the Bible is all you need Jesus said Don’t have anything g to do with anybody’s club organization or religion A it’s NOT ME!

Mormon doctrine is based on a faulty book that has multiple contradictions to reality and truth. If you are enslaved in Mormonisn I suggest you start reading the New Testament and find freedom from sin and a new life in Jesus Christ and Him alone.

So you as a full grown adult think the one true path is a religion a guy pulled out of a hat in the 1830s with plagiarized writing and plagiarized rituals about white Indians that never existed and a god that holds families hostage...

The theory that parents' inward feelings are "secondary" to their fear for their child cannot be known by anyone but the parents-- and maybe not even them! you're not helping people by saying this, please stop feeding a fire of bitterness and tension.

The adult children have every right to live their lives as they see fit. The parents need to get over themselves. If they haven't raised them to think and thrive on their own, they have indeed failed.

@talmagerichardson5575 Жыл бұрын
@@jpr9863 "the parents need to get over themselves" what is your argument? parents should never feel remorse, regret, and failure based on the lives lived by their adult children? Surely you wouldn't tell the disappointed or grieving parent of a child who battles heroin addiction, or is involved in violent gangs, or committs suicide, "you just need to get over yourself." Would you? Although there are those who might shurg off violence or drug use, a caring parent has every right to (a) feel within themselves a sense of right and wrong, and (b) feel inadequate when their loved ones choose to live differently. Can one fairly dismiss deeply held religious beliefs as an arbitrary reason of concern for parents? You're correct that adult children have the right to live as they please. But isn't saying to their loved ones, "you MUST feel ___ and you MUST NOT feel ___ or you're a bad person" actually EXERCISING the same type of emotional control you're criticizing?

It’s not aiming directly at the parents, it’s aiming at the broader issue of a cult who holds people emotionally accountable for the preservation of a perfect visage of faith.

@@ezrafriesner8370 the video is titled “failed Mormon parents.” It’s aimed directly at the parents. Separating the abstract culture of parents in general from the parents themselves is an easy way to dehumanize them and make them easier to attack. A culture can only be made up of real people.
