Great video. I doubled the size of my suburban San Francisco Bay Area house. By the time I was finished I had 12 permits and countless inspections. As an IT guy 40 hours a week, I spent a lot of boring conf calls reading code docs and guides, so it became a challenge to not fail my inspections... but I often did and I almost always appreciated the inspectors care and concern for helping me build a safe, to code home. Like you guys I grew to appreciate the sensibility of the building code - very cool and smart.

I was a job site supervisor in commercial construction till I retired and I was thinking How many times when our professional plumbers failed inspection. Because our builds many times took me out of state we of course bid the plumbing jobs out. And you just never knew what was going to happen.or what the inspector was going to T off on. We counted on the local plumbers we hired thinking they would know what to expect from the inspector.. but many times we failed over the years you just fix it and move on

When you plumb a home the first time, you learn how to do things correctly after you've done it incorrectly because of inspectors. Although it costs you additional money you usually remember how to do it correct because it cost you. Some inspectors are very difficult to work with and I have found if you keep your cool and ask them questions, most seem to give you a break by letting you send them photos of the corrected problems, rather then shutting you down for the 30 day period most states allow them to. Others can be really difficult to work with. You got a good one, guys.

For a couple of rookies having only some minor fails like that is pretty good. Easy fixes. With regards to your garage doors I hope you went with teflon rollers for the door panels. It will be much quieter. If you have not done so install several layers of rubber padding under the brace bracket that holds the opener to the ceiling. Install sound deadening insulation in the bays around the opener. The sound and vibrations will travel up the floor joists into the unit above. This will help mitigate this. Lastly, get a jar of vaseline and a rag and rub vaseline on all rubber parts on the door. This will help preserve them and extend their life. This works great on fridge seals and car door seals.
@chrisphillips20533 жыл бұрын
I don't know if anyone else notice about 9:15 mark on video. That you have altered/removed part of an Engineered truss/floor joist. I believe it will cause you grief on your inspection. Even though its the cord, you have notched out the plate as well. I would seriously check with and engineer in reinforcing that member. Good luck, like to hear back from you regarding concern.

11:18 I don't mean to be critical, but for safety sake, please wear safety glasses, especially when working at or above shoulder level. Wood can not be removed from the eye with a magnet, it often requires much more invasive means.

As a plumber since 1977 and an building inspector for 21 years, I see that you have metal strapping on your plastic water pipe. It will cut into plastic piping. Replace with plastic supports. If you are in an UPC State for which Idaho is, mid-story guides are required on unsupported vertical stacks and all vertical stacks need to be supported at their bases. Also, check for 1/4" per foot fall on drainage piping. Generally, cleanouts are not required above the first floor with the exception of kitchen sinks. The base of the main drain as the inspector pointed out also gets a cleanout. On the shower, you may have failed your framing inspection for cutting the floor truss. Talk to your engineer about a fix. The T&P plastic line also gets nail plated, strapped and graded at a 1/4" per foot. Technically, waste lines are not supposed to be air tested as past tests have shattered. Idaho could have nuances to their code. One last comment about framing. Breaks in your OSB mid-story should be blocked and nailed for shear value.

11:19 - It worried me watching you do this. Many years ago, I broke my left wrist while using a 1/2" chuck drill to put holes in 2X4's for black ABS drain lines. I got careless and did not properly hold the drill motor. In an instant, the drill motor snapped around and my left wrist snapped backwards. It was very painful and took a long time to heal.

Great job on the plumbing, there's always some small issues to address, like an additional clean out, maximum 30" spacing on those water supply pipes, and I missed the third issue...
@chrisardern45943 жыл бұрын
Just using the banding strap to support the water pipes would that not eventually cause a leak due to each time the pipe is used to carry a flow ( a tap turned on) of water the pipe will flex and this will wear the pipe in that place. I may be wrong but I would have put some pipe insulation round the pipe before the banding was fitted. Just a thought. I would also would have thought the pea trap should be accessible for cleaning and not glued.

The plumbing code is the minimum requirement needed to pass inspection. I would of used better quality pipe hangers and insulate the the joist space with plastic drains in them for sound proof when above a finished living area. And it's a good idea to have continuous support for horizontal piping serving the kitchen sink drain if a dishwasher is installed.
@bretwalley46733 жыл бұрын
Usually with something as simple as a Nail Plate, if you have them on hand, they will allow you to install them while he is there. Cutting into the floor truss will cause you problems with your framing inspection.

While it doesn't really have to do with the plumbing situation, I can't help but notice that at 9:14 you have cut into your floor trusses, and have completely demolished one side's truss plate on the top chord. Definitely a BIG no-no. I know that it is probably covered up and may be too late at this point, but you should run it by your floor truss supplier so that they can formulate a repair so that the whole floor truss doesn't fail.
