We were called out on a rescue on top of Skyline Drive. An ATV got stuck. So we set out to save some lives. Unfortunately when we got there things didn't go as planned. It was bitter cold but the views were amazing.

I realize you already have tons of comments, so take this for what it's worth. I was stuck in the snow in an almost identical situation. No shovel, no tools except for a jack, no cell coverage, didn't bother to tell anyone where I was going or when I would be back, and high centered with only my right front tire touching the ground. Here's what worked for me (and what I thought you were doing, at one point): 1) Jack up back of the truck as high as it would go. 2) Pack as much snow as I could into the holes below the tires 3) Lower the back tires onto the newly packed snow 4) Jack up the front of the truck as high as it would go 5) Pack as much snow as I could into the holes below the tires 6) Lower the front tires onto the newly packed snow 7) Repeat 1-6 as many times as necessary to get the truck off of its belly and the weight supported by the tires, and at or slightly above the track that I drove in on. 8) Smooth the path as necessary behind the tires to reduce the possibility of hitting a bump and making a new hole 9) *Gently* drive backwards and out of danger If you are stuck in snow, usually a heavy foot on the gas is your worst enemy. The spinning tires just create heat, which melts/softens the snow and makes it more even slippery. Congrats for not ending up on the evening news!

The trick to getting out of deep snow is to not spin your wheels. Rock the vehicle back and forth, at an idle or fast idle, by repatedly shifting from 1st/Drive to Reverse. Don't hit the brake and keep the revs low and constant. Time the shifts for that moment where movement stops, then the other way. Build a cadence. Rinse and repeat. First few times you will be moving less than an inch but each time you get more and more. Eventually you will be able to have enough momentum to break out. Totally different technique than getting out of deep sand.
@aphextwin5712
@aphextwin5712 2 жыл бұрын
Of course, once you are stuck such that your wheels just keep spinning no matter how little gas you give it, you’re screwed. Another idea, whose success rate depends on the kind of snow, is to build a path back to safe ground by compacting the snow between your vehicle and said safe ground with your feet. It can take a while and you still need to get yourself unstuck first.

I've used the same technique in deep soft/powder sand driving a manual Nissan Patrol. It works. It just requires patience and persistence. Pushing your foot to the floor as demonstrated never achieves anything, except digging holes.

Like I commented on Matt's channel, he was lucky to pull out this SUV from a sinkhole and in it, his "Guardian Angel" and/or his over-all 'GoOD Karma' all worked overtime to get the (not 'sketchy' but DANGEROUS) recovery done. For these types of getting stuck w/NO TREES, ROCKS to 'snatch' from, I call it a "Stake Snatch." Consider this : Figure out a way to drive into the hard soil/layers some sort of a tough strong 'stake' and then connect either a portable batterypack Winch, or even a cheap manual 1-2 Ton hand crank to move/get you out of whatever predicament. ;-)

Option one: We use this trick in sand and dirt should be similar to snow I have just never had to in snow. Bury the tyre in the direction you want to go and winch to it. You can make a sand or snow wall and use the tyre flat surface for resistance. A slot or hole in the wall or into the hole to pull the tyre not lift it. Anyway it gives you longer pulls for next time :) if you cannot do that as the snow is not there then Option 2: The other thing you can do is pull the high lift apart and ratchet tie it to one rear wheel (if you have lockers and the ground is harder) go softly and you get about 1m movement every rotation but direction control is a little vague if you try go hard well wiplash and a flying piece of steel is not a good soloution I had two y posts one on each side of the vehicle both rear tyres and a log strapped to the bumper and under the diff once. Winching against a flat rock under the water we could not see) anyway the front hub let go but the log and y posts (Warratah for the Kiwi's and Aussies) overcame the drag and got me out to where repairs could be done.

Just an idea... Maybe consider making a a grab and go emergency/recovery kit with the basics so you can throw it in whatever vehicle you end up in. Small 3/8 sae & metric socket set, basic wrench set, a couple ratchet straps, tow strap or tow rope, a few soft shackles, a folding shovel and a small spade shovel with D handle, hose clamp assortment, wire terminal assortment, couple pair of 10" pliers, wire strips/crimper, etc. To start out with just get inexpensive stuff from harbor because your bound to lose or improvise with tools you have out in the field. Coming up with a bare Bones grab and go recovery kit may make for an interesting video. Edit- Next time you get stuck in the snow like that try stretching winch line under the axes and bury your spare tire in the snow creating a snow anchor. A log chain buried in a loop works better but it didn't appear that you had a chain on you.

Best way to figure out what you need next time is to have things go sideways THIS time. Not ideal when on an actual call, but you shenanigan'd it out, and got back home. Snow is a nasty beast once it grabs you. Your instinct (as seen) is to go for the loud pedal, and that almost inevitably leaves you equally stuck, if not worse off. Best snow driving advice I was ever given was air down L-O-W, and drive like you don't want the snow to even know you are there. Also, just assume and be prepared to do a lot of digging if you are the only vehicle, and have limited winching options (which is a good assumption to go out with on any ride anyhow). Smartest decision of the day was to go with extra hands (legs, and backs), and not Lone Ranger it. A good set of tire chains are absolute gold too, but go for the style used on log skidders rather than on-the-road types you see used on transport trucks, and such. There is quite a difference. Cheers from Canada!

Might be time to outfit that rescue rig with sum 4 traxx boards. They also serve as shovels in a pinch. Maybe a set of tire chains and worse case lower tire pressure. Good thinking of using the spare, I resorted to floor mats once ☺️ also a good thing to bring is a 500’ spool of rope to get ya to that next tree. Another great vid would be fabricated a winch anchor or snow anchor, with you plasma or CNC it be a short vid 😉😉

Getting stuck in the snow like that is no biggy if you have a Pull-Pal with you. I've been stuck out in the west desert of Utah a few times without a tree or rock for 20 miles and had no problem getting out and on my way. I'm in my 60's and go on solo runs in the boonies all the time, but I wouldn't ever go offroad without my ground anchor! The other trick that would have got you out quicker would be to bury the spare tire so it's standing up, put the winch hook in the center of it, and stomp snow in around it and winch yourself out. You could even have your buddies stand on top of it , lol.
