After this, the producers made Supergirl and Christopher Reeve was supposed to be in it. But then changed his mind. Apparently he really did not liked this movie. And he didn't wanted to play the role again. Until Cannon got the rights from the Salkinds and convinced him to do another one. I'll say this, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace was about Superman unlike this which it was really a Richard Pryor comedy that just happens to have Superman in it. Richard Pryor's role is so dominant to the point where Superman becomes a secondary character in his own movie.
@DianaGohan
@DianaGohan 3 ай бұрын
The only reason Cannon got Reeve to do Quest for Peace is because Reeves was really adament on wanting to make a point about the whole nuclear weapons issues that was prevlant at the time and wanted to have a big focus on that plus was told IV would not be the goof fest that 3 was so.... he did technically get those things with IV even if no one got a good movie from it.

Just a note (from someone who watched this movie -way- too many times as a kid) - The 'evil juice' in the false kryptonite was nicotine. Richard Pryor's character was 'designing' the kryptonite on the computer, and it had a 1% 'unknown' compound in it. He looked around and noticed the nicotine content on the pack of smokes he had, and thus nicotine-kryptonite was born. A not-so-subtle stab at the burgeoning (at the time) 'cigarettes are bad' mindset.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, he was taking a mass spectrometer reading of the remains of Krypton to try and figure out what Kryptonite was made of. So he fudged that little detail. Essentially the whole 'Superman turning evil' subplot was a Red Kryptonite story shoved into the middle of a weather control computer story. So much Silver Age weirdness.

At the very end of the closing credits for Superman II it says "Superman will return in Superman III". I guess that's as close as you got to sequel baiting in those days, but it definitely excited me as a child. So, I saw Superman III in the theater on opening weekend, I was scarred for a very long time by the cyborg transformation sequence. Now I am kind of sad that "evil Superman" and "evil super computer" are the closest things we'll probably ever get to seeing Bizarro and Brainiac in a live action Superman movie. I guess it could have been worse, Christopher Reeve almost didn't come back and they were seriously considering Tony Danza as his replacement. Also... those new credits are pretty awesome!

My headcanon is that Brainiac was damaged as it approached Earth and bonded with Ross Webster, but lost its memory in the process. That explains why he's such a savant with computers, why he's driven to build a gigantic supercomputer capable of practically anything, why he knows where Krypton is, and how he was able to survive the fall off of Webster's ski lodge roof. That's definitely not in the movie, but it makes it a *little* more tolerable for me.

the battle with the evil version of himself is the best bit of this film apart from the terrifying assimilation of the villains assistant into an evil robot.

I assume the evil computer plot might have been some wonky Brainiac thing that went wrong in the writers shack. Also, its funny how the first set of Superman movies had the same issues the first set of Batman movies ended up having. The first two were good, the third one went off the rails and the fourth was just a shit show.

That part where the evil computer turns her into a “robot”(?) gave me nightmares as a kid.

There was a whole plan to include Brainiac, the alien robot villain, in this, but the cheap ass directors condensed it into "Richard Pryor built a thing". Hopefully we can get Brainiac onscreen now that WB finally managed to Doomsday onscreen like theyve wanted for so many years.

Great new intro! You're coverage of this film gave me flashbacks to scenes I had blocked out. I remembered the film being bad... but not this bad. Wow. I'm glad it puts the merits of "Superman" and "Superman II" in perspective. But sorry you had to suffer to get that perspective.

As they say, when you get to the bottom of the barrell, bore straight to the center of the earth, and die a fiery death, the only way you can go is out the other side of the planet, hence Superman 4.

Y'know if they had Richard Pryor playing a disguised Brainiac heading to Smallville in an attempt to find Superman, it could've been really good. Especially if Pryor started off with a comedic fascade that he just tossed aside upon revealing things...
