@@starsiegeplayer Not entirely true. Cannon got a LOT of money to do a Spider-Man film that, reportedly, James Cameron was supposed to direct. I forget the millions but it was VERY sizeable. Golan and Globus decided to instead to take that money and make two movies instead, and then, from the profits made from both movies, they reasoned they would have an even higher budget for Spider-Man. One of those movies was Superman 4. The other movie was supposed to be the sequel to Masters of the Universe, which over time, became Cyborg. The deal with the original Masters of the Universe was that Mattel and Cannon were each supposed to put up half of the money and Cannon kept giving Mattel the run around and Mattel wound up financing almost the entire thing. That's why the end scene is pitch dark. The movie got shut down and they had one chance to get that shot as it was the last thing that needed to be filmed. If you want more examples of how shady they were, read Charles Bukowski's book Hollywood. Though technically fiction, it's his recounting of the filming of the movie Barfly.

I think what makes Superman so likable is that as strong as he is, he _doesn't_ abuse his power. He _doesn't_ go insane. He _doesn't_ defy his principles. And the few times he falters or fails to save someone, he _doesn't_ team up with a mass murderer and take over the world. He learns from his mistake and _continues to do his job._ You know, like a rational adult? Yeah, I could see him unknowingly forcing his will on people in small increments, but I'm pretty sure he'd stop if any of his friends brought it to his attention. That's because he's a good guy inside and out. He _listens_ to people. He believes that morality is something to nurture in people, not to force onto them. Anti-heroes are supposed to be the exception, not the rule. And obviously, thinking this way makes me an oblivious manchild, not a grown adult who's already tired of this world's negativity.
@ingonyama705 жыл бұрын
I'm right there with you. If anything, this movie's biggest weakness is that Superman's a well-meaning idiot. But I prefer 'well-intentioned but naive' over 'smart but cynical asshole'. as a characterization for Superman. It's what fundamentally differentiates him from Batman, more than either character's skillset or supporting cast.
@jamstonjulian69475 жыл бұрын
It makes sense for a superhero to be conflicted when they're human, like Batman. But when they are a literal Alien, their moral dilemma is a lot less interesting. The reason a superhero like Superman exists as a concept is to be a beacon of hope and an embodiment of all the things we wish we could do. Yeah, he has the conflict of having to choose whether to be in a human relationship, but at the core of it all we know who he is and that he isn't going to suddenly team up with the bad guys or rule with an iron fist. And where the newest movies failed is questioning whether he should be a hero at all, or sacrifice anything for humanity, immediately making him the least likeable version of an uber-powerful Space God imaginable.

Superman removes all nuclear weapons from the planet and fling them into the sun. Quest for peace achieved! 😁
@tinkerer33995 жыл бұрын
Honestly as someone who lived through at least part of the fear... kinda? I mean we were talking about the complete extermination of every man, woman, and child on the planet. How much war is acceptable to save the human race?
@Khenfu_Cake5 жыл бұрын
@@tinkerer3399 That is assuming WoMD would even be used. Nuclear weapons are incredibly impractical weapons in actual warfare. Their main purpose lies solely in the threat of them being used. While I don't believe it's entirely because of it, I do believe MAD, or at least the belief by the powers that be, that it would happen, played a major part in keeping the Cold War from, well... getting hot. No one wants to drop the first warhead, if they know their opponent will now have an excuse to completely annihilate them as the first response. Nuclear weapons aren't the only means you can kill a lot of people with. They are a bit more effective, but you can still reduce a country to burning rubble somewhat effectively using other means. The difference, however, is that the powers that be simply don't fear the other methods as much, so they are more likely to engage in warfare, where they are used. Nuclear weapons however are something they fear enough to keep them on the doormat, sort of speak. As the well known Latin pro verb says: Si vis pacem, para bellum. If you want peace, prepare for war.

Fun fact: Christopher Reeve also made this film so he could get finance for his Street Smart film.

Just a heads up, its just Reeve, you are probably mixing it up with the other Superman, George Reeves.

Yes. It bombed (Cannon barely marketed it) but got great reviews from critcs.

That was a very enjoyable review of Superman IV. Rather than just complaining, you both had a lot of fun with it. The film truly is so bad it's good, unlike Superman III which really is a chore to get through. If you listen to the commentary, screenwriter Mark Rosenthal details a much better script that was initially drafted, one that would feature Christopher Reeve playing the evil clone. Due to the money disappearing, so did the crew who worked on the effects for the previous film. The hiring of Cannon's low budget schlock director Sidney J. Furie pretty much ensured that Superman IV would be a disaster. As for the budget, a lot of the money went to finishing up Masters of the Universe, which Cannon had high hopes for. It was released earlier that same year if I remember correctly, and of course flopped. Just a quick correction: Cannon had made a few big budget films with Tobe Hooper, most notably Lifeforce and Invaders From Mars, both of which flopped. Masters of the Universe and Superman IV were basically the death of Cannon films.

26:00 Super-ventriloquism, obviously. But canonically, he can imitate voices, and so he can imitate sounds. It's actually easier than you'd think with a little practice.

@@trevingrayek791 It was kind of a joke. I should have said it was a Silver Age reference.

@@kimifw58 Right, okay. Still think they could have ATTEMPTED an explanation. Even as a joke, your suggestions are more of an indicator about what that was. Probably more thought than the makers of this put into it.

To me, ‘Superman III’ is a de facto Richard Pryor film. Richard was in the film more than Chris Reeve did seemingly.
