this episode was so sad. he loved his wife so much that he went through a risky operation so she wouldn't have to know or live with his bipolar disorder; except the surgery almost killed him and she ended up finding out anyway. the conversation is (thankfully) a lot different these days, but keep in mind that S2 of House aired back in 2006 - and even then mental illnesses were still heavily stigmatized in most facets of life. i grew up with a mother who suffered from bipolar disorder and it wasn't until 2002 that she finally got on the right medication after being in and out of psychiatrists offices for 20 years.

I have bipolar 2, so I've been depressed for a long time and was getting treatment for depression. However, the meds weren't working (SSRIS, SNRIS, etc.). Then I had a hypomanic episode (didnt sleep for a few days, did some risky things, was extremely restless and talked a lot, was cocky, and I had a day that I blacked out). I just graduated with my first psych degree (going to grad school now woop woop) and I had taken clinical psychology- I knew I had bipolar 2. So I went to my psychiatrist, told him what was up, was started on meds for bipolar. Took a year and a lot of trial and error with medication because not everyone responds to the same meds. Now I am completely stable and have medication (lamictal) that works. Diagnosis and finding medication (and for some, staying on medication) is super hard to come by. Good psychiatrists are out there, but it took me 4 people to get 1 that was thorough and listened to all symptoms and took everything step by step with me. But it's worth it, to not feel all the feelings.

You know, his speech isn't totally random. If you listen to what he's saying, you can make out some patterns. Like when he responds to a question he says "of golf," He clearly meant to say "of course," Golf Course. Or "I grapple average." depending on the context, "average" and "normal" can mean basically the same thing.

I vaguely remember later in the episode, they had to figure out what he meant from the “nonsense” he said. I always thought it’d be easy to rig up a computer program he could use to talk. Get a list of English words, and set up a binary search program so that he can find a word in 14-15 simple questions that are all phrased “Is it this word, before it alphabetically, or after it alphabetically?” Speed it up by having it ask about more common words first.

Happened out of nowhere while at the grocery store and there was no other symptom. Doctor - "He thinks he's saying it normally." Me - Why disqualify the rush = Why rule out speed. (Synonyms) "Why disqualify the rush?" Disqualify (rule out/get rid of) Rush (speed, in this case drugs) 〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️ I'm tabled = I'm stable (QWERTY) "I'm tabled" D moves to the left of the word "tabled" making it I'm "dtable". D is changed to S, because S is on the left of D in QWERTY, making it "I'm stable". 〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️ Of golf = of course. (Similar) "Of golf." You play golf on a golf course. "Of course." That's why they sound right to him. I'm still trying to figure them out "I flung the investment." (I have one idea, but I'm not 100% sure.) "Why can sign?" "It's perficient." "I displaced my function, back laid." "I grapple average." (I have one idea, but I'm not 100% sure.) "Cancer glisten." "Keep the stained. Knife can't force." "What is the durable."
