The Fair City of Udaipur formed part of the ‘Secrets of India’ series, produced by the Gaumont-British Picture Corporation in 1934. These educational geography films were the by-product of the company’s involvement in a filmed flight over Mount Everest, footage of which appeared as Wings Over Everest (1934) (Low, 2005, 61). Among the crew were the cameraman S. R. Bonnett and director Geoffrey Barkas, who were also responsible for The Fair City of Udaipur.Several of the ‘Secrets of India’ series films were re-edited by Gaumont in 1937, when this documentary was re-issued as A Central Indian Town: Udaipur.
The city of Udaipur is in the state of Rajasthan in western India. It was founded by Maharana Udai Singh as the capital city of the Kingdom of Mewar following the fall of the former capital, Chittor, to Mughals in 1568. Udaipur is located in a mountainous region, which rendered the city safer from the attacks of mounted Mughal warriors. The kingdom nevertheless suffered continued attacks from its neighbours. During the early nineteenth century the Mewar rulers petitioned the British raj for protection. This was granted in 1818 when Udaipur was established as one of the Princely states of British India.

Today people wash clothes inside the river while people in ancient times washed their clothes near the banks and used the water by putting on the cloth

To a point. People had more faith in those days and to be honest the world was more sustainable. Nowday's far too many people roughly 7.75 bn people vs about 2-2.5 bn when this film taken.

What is the most important thing in the film is the name of the Director: Geoffrey Barkas was the director of the Camouflage departement for the british army during WWII, thanks to him Montgomery won the second battle of El Alamein in November 1942; he was responsible for the project consisting of luring Rommel's army to think that the battle would take place in the south of the railway station when actually it did in the north. He realized with his crew a complete dummy army while succeeding to render till the last minute the British VIIIth army invisible to Rommel! There are 2 books worth reading : his memoirs "The Camouflage story" and more recently Rick Stroud's fantastic book " The Phantom Army of El Alamein." His major assistants were Peter Proud, Steven Sykes and Tony Ayrton who was in charge during the camouflage of El Alamein. Proud deceived the germans during the Tobruk siege by using a mixture of flour, Worcester sauce and sand to use as paint. In particular it was used on windshields to prevent them from reflecting the sun and be an easy target of the german Luftwaffe, he also contributed to prevent the germans from completely destroying the harbor and completely cached the desalinisation factory by making it look destroyed by germans bombs with a "trompe l'oeil' decor.

Yes after that carpet bombing was done near North to make obvious to German. After that attack on south was delayed by storm for one day. But this camouflage plan worked Very well.
