Used to be 2 of those in Sandpoint Alaska. They were installed in 1947 and ran without overhaul well into the 1980's. You could hear them all over town. I was just a young teenager and id go to the Aleutian Cold Storage shop just to watch them run. Engineer there told me they only get shut down for oil change and started back up. 350RPM
@thegoldensteed Жыл бұрын
That's sweet! Do you know how often they would change the oil?
@bobl7811 ай бұрын
hard to believe they were never rebuild in 40 years. There is no wear free engine Wonder how often they chaned the oil I guess they were used for generating electricity?

Our family Ranch in texas has a fairbanks morse like this installed 1930s 1960s it was placed in stand by auxiliary power .. well different times it has been Used .. 2021 massive snow ice storm it ran one month -- non stop no issues it always has been maintained 100% and concrete building protection from elements I think it is a 250 kw unit not sure but definitely 4 cylinder .. has to power main house bunk house barns one horses one for dairy cows and full Machine shop in business since 1930 .. its nice to see these running , but its best to use it for purpose it was built for like ours. Great video Thanks

VWs are no worse than any other brand. It's just that they got caught doing what every other manufacturer has gotten away with. Their only fault was not being sneaky enough. That's how the game is played these days.

How are the mains lubricated if it's a two stroke?
@kimmer658711 жыл бұрын
Same as a 4 stroke. It does not breathe thru the crank case.like a weed whacker engine so it has normal pressure oiling on journals and connecting rods.
@mikeshanahan348611 жыл бұрын
kimmer6 The air intake is in the crankcase,look at the pictures.On the same side as the exhaust at the bottom.I know this because i have seen other engine decriptions of the same exact type of fairbanks morse diesel
@kimmer658711 жыл бұрын
Yes..and my Detroit Diesel 3-53 also has a blower on the side and intake ports in the cylinder sleeves. But it is completely isolated from the crank case which has standard crankshaft oiling. The intake ports on this FM are in their own gallery and are not exposed to the crank case air.
@mikeshanahan348611 жыл бұрын
kimmer6 Then what forces the exhaust out?On the detroit diesel the supercharger does the work of forcing the exhaust out and a fresh charge in.Since the fairbanks is not supercharged and you say the downstroke of the piston does not do it what does? Also i have heard from another source that the mains are lubricated by a wick system like an old electric motor.
@mikeshanahan348611 жыл бұрын
kimmer6 You can read about how these engines are scavenged and lubricated at Oldengine.org.They have an online copy of a 1940 FM manual.The print is kinda small but readable.
