Perhaps... Fairbanks morse still makes OP engines and they are installed in high reliability applications like hospital generators etc... probably the biggest problem on the old engines is oil consumption and it being mechanical injection which are not issues on modern engines since we have figured out how to deal with those issues.

😂I always liked fairbanks morse locomotives. I remembered years ago back in the 1960s the new haven RR had some FM H16-44 diesels. When one of these locomotives was idleing for some time and was throttled up they always produced a cloud of white smoke.

OP engines when properly maintained are the cleanest diesels bar none. Fairbanks still makes OP engines and they are some of the best made. The fact that this engine is so poorly maintained and its still going .. are a testament to how robust that engine is.

Probably just came out of the yard and was at idle or a lower RPM for a while. FMs were designed to be run hard. They load up bad at 350-360 rpm, idle, but once you get them kicked up, 600+rpm, they burn out the excess fuel(and more than likely oil) and happily chug away burning cleanly. My company still use a pair of them in a shift tugboat in Alabama. We have to push into the hill every day and run them to the governor for and hour or so just to get them to burn off the fuel from idling during shift work.

@@Wingnut353 No head. the pistons face each other.one bank up top,one on the bottom. So when the pistns move towards each other to create the heat, from comprssing the air charge, there is no head to leak. It looks like unburnt fuel ,having served my apprenticeship on big diesels ,I've seen ship blow smoke like that when an injector sticks. too much fuel, and not enough air. Another couple of opposed engines were the Commer TS3 truck engine,6 pistons ,three cylinders and the Napier deltic. these were 9 and 18 cylinder OP engines with the banks arranged in a Delta formation.
