Welcome to this Tales From the Hut & Hangar Aviation Rarities episode about the Fairey Britten- Norman Mainliner. A very rare known about project.
Another odd British transport aircraft. Was a good idea but sadly never happened.

Thank you for researching this unusual proposal. I used to fly in Trilanders to Alderney and a few Silver City car ferry trips from Lydd to LeTouquet - I never expected a hybrid of the two! The Bristol Superfreighter experience was special; once I was allowed to go to the jumpseat to watch the pilots make a landing at Lydd.

I live in KFLL and have Britten-Norman aircraft fly over my house every day at low altitude, typically the twins and CERTAINLY overloaded. They are carrying freight to the Bahamas. At those scumbag places, if it fits in the door, it's going- Those pilots are total cowboys; Fort Lauderdale Executive could basically be shut down if the FAA really cracked down on these carriers. In any case, this aircraft is interesting. It is bigger than the Dash-8/ATR/CRJ, and while the fuel burn would be atrocious with the screaming Dart engines, a set of nice 2500 hp P&W Canada PW100 series engines could substantially change that, or a pair of the late PW150's from the Dash-8 Q-400 with 5000 hp per side could make this a winner. B-N is a tiny company and could never get this off the ground without another major company coming in and helping. That's why it didn't happen; There was no business case for this product at the time.

Great concept, and great runway performance. To bad it wasn't produced.

This is a novel design. Suspect that it would have found many niche users had it made it into service... I continue to be intrigued by your research and presentation! Enjoy your summer!!

Another interesting video. It was probably going to underpowered with only 3 engines compared to the Hercules 4.

Great video and rare find. I wonder how low economic countries would have faired with the difficulty of servicing the 3rd lofty engine.

The joke around the industry has always been that BN use "Acoustic lift Technology" (the noise vibrates the air particles creating lift) and it looks like they continued this concept with the choice of Darts!

Pointless design. The HP Military Herald with RR Tynes was a better prospect and also got nowhere.

I disagree. Nothing is pointless in aviation. People learn if they fail and improve as they go on .

It's ugly but the islander and trilander I have worked on both and they were very reliable aircraft and the company I worked for had 5 trilander and 1 islander and they flew the trilander as they were ment for and they were very profitable aircraft we did 75 hourly s and one would fly 75 hours a week every Tuesday it was in for a check and the aircraft nevery was a problem . Britian Norman got it right build dimple and I think this aircraft would have been fantastic for short haul and the problem is people don't see it my way but they want retractable gear pressurized and all the fancy avionics just to haul freight a short distance were this aircraft may use a slight more fuel but would be cheaper to maintain and lest to go wrong and this means cheaper freight cost . We need to slow down a bit because especial carting freight you damage the hual it expencives to fis . We used islanders and trilander forr short island hopping someegs were 3 minutes and another company brought in Cessna Caravans and they had the Uthorities to put the other out of business as they were going to fly RPT and they had to go to 10,000 feet on every leg and the prices wentvup to over double and the trip took longer .now they have gone and got islanders for some of the trips because the caravan are to costly .show the experts that want the fancy aircraft are not so smart

Great comment.. I have covered many simply types on this channel. The Merchantman, Loadmaster & of course all the Shorts Sheds (one of the best ever I think). Simple maintenance , low costs, uncomplicated in general is key. The LDA-01 was another I have covered that went down this route. Some great new cargo/utility aircraft are about, but in the long term you need realistic aircraft you can support & fix in remote places away from all the hi-tech support. Ugly & functional is profitable.
