Fairlane Falcon Mustang Suspension 1963 1973

1963 1964 Falcon and Comet used the same strut rod.
1965 Falcon Comet and Mustang used the same strut rod.
This was the beginning of Ford's slow march to a single type in their suspensions on the mid-size and smaller cars.
1963 to 1965 Falcon Comet and 1965 1966 Mustang used the same lower control arm.
1963 to 1965 Falcon Comet and 1965 1966 Mustang used the same upper control alarm. However one source shows a different upper control alarm for Comet in 1963.
1963 to 1965 Fairlane, is all on its own as of 2023. No lower or upper control arm is available.
1966 to 1967 Fairlane Falcon and 1967 Mustang strut rods are common.
1967 Cougar strut rods are their own thing altogether.
1968 was the first year that Ford pulled everything into a common source. Therefore, the 1968 to 1970 Fairlane Torino Falcon Mustang Cougar Comet and Montego strut rods are all the same.
1966 1967 Fairlane Falcon, Comet and 67 Mustang and Cougar used to same lower control arm.
1968 1971 Fairlane Torino Falcon Comet and Montego and 1968 to 1973 Mustang and Cougar all use the same lower control arm.
1966 to 1971 Fairlane Torino Falcon Comet and Montego all use the same upper control arm.
I'm not going to go into springs. Because springs vary between models engines and accessories. There were a myriad of different springs that Ford used between 1963 and 1973 on their cars.

I have a 63 Fairlane, and a 64 Comet wagon. The 63-64 Meteor had a “quite ride” giant bushing in the front suspension (I can’t remember how it worked or where it was exactly) but the Meteor suspension is near identical to the Fairlane’s.

And that forehead mark is the same exact reason why I have a nephew that we refer to as "Tasco". He shot a borrowed rifle the score got him. I told him either the score was set up wrong or he was holding the rifle wrong. So, he shot my 30.06. BAM! Same thing, same spot, Dave amount of blood. Nice scar though! 😂

1966 Fairlane has one year only tie rods. Can’t remember if it was inner or outer. They want a bloody fortune for them.

I used Kelsey Hayes vented discs and stub axles from a 1970 Falcon on my 63 falcon futura only needing the 65 upper arms and tie rod shims...also i put the same 1970 disc brakes on my 66 mustang...bolted straight up !!! cheers...

Big problem with 63/64 fairlane 500 platform, it was a different front suspension setup, had to have different tools for setup, remember the dealer had the only tooling to do alignment.

I can understand the fun!Currently need a RH 67 mustang control arm. I have a 65-66 mustang in my stash as well as a 68 fairlane arm. Always fun, I dont have an extra 68 strut rod so no dice.

Early Comets had Edsel part numbers, since was planned to be an Edsel, but Edsel was killed off in 1960 model year.

The springs were different between Mustangs and Cougars. Look at the stance difference between Mustangs and Cougars. Also, since the 67 - 68 Cougars were longer than a Mustang the engine mounts were also different.

So, are you telling me the lower control arm for a 1965 Fairlane Sports Coupe is different than a 1965 Mustang? Can you explain the difference?

FoMoCo was at times like Sony and their electronics. The cassette for CD's for automotive usr was different than home use. You could get both to jold 10 CD's but no interchange. So you could not pull the cassette out of your home 10 disc changer and put it in the car. I got an explanation that different teams designed the automotive components than designed the home components. In like manner, for some teason Ford does not have the bell hoising intercjangability that the General has. Different teams?? Then as you mention, the suspension. I can understand different suspension components between different models due to weight. But some of yhose differences are ridiculous. A number of years ago, Ma Mopar had a look at steering columns. They had about 30 different part numbers on the books. Basically the same bit different lengths and colors to fit compacts, full size, pickups and vans. Pretty expensive to warehouse that many columns around the country. Each warehouse might keep oy a couple. So they decided on I think it was 4 colors. Then there are the intermediate shafts with different lengths to accomodate fitment to the various models. Basic matt black for all. Using the grey matter for more than growing hair. The one smart decision Mopar has made since about 1973.

Don't even get me started on when we start talking about suspension & brake parts for the '55 - '56 Ford Full-size cars! Why Ford couldn't just use the truck parts on their station wagons, instead of making the wagons their "own breed" of parts is beyond me. Brake parts are virtually non-existent for the wagons!!
