One tip I learned from an amazing book called ‘Organic Housekeeping’ is when you’re cleaning using a cloth, fill your sink or a bucket with hot water and add several cleaning cloths. As you use one, don’t rinse it in your clean water, rather set it aside. Take another clean cloth and continue cleaning. It uses less water overall and you’re never getting dirty the water you’re using in your bucket.

Emptying the toaster for the birds, that’s very mindful. I need to make a feeder like that. Enjoyed seeing what’s in your cupboards and how you run your kitchen. It’s nice, how you said, you’re” mindful about not hoarding but having just enough.” Loved seeing the different birds 🐦. Thanks for sharing.

I'm wondering about that, because all up to date advice is not to feed bread/breadcrumbs to birds, as it harms their digestive system.
@kH-bv8ix3 жыл бұрын
Well, in the States, our bread us fortified (synthetic). The wheat is hybridized (bad for all creatures' digestion). Organic wheat is about 50% contaminated with hybridized wheat. So, I agree, that is bad for the birds (and people).

Where I come from, a lot of women would put newspapers on top of their kitchen cupboards (and tall wardrobes or other tall pieces of furniture). No one sees them but they are great protection. My mum used to do this and I still do, especially in the kitchen where the dust they collect is harder to scrub (rather than just changing the newspapers when needed) due to the grease and steam caused by cooking.

A small kitchen is better than larger kitchen in my view. It's size makes you prioritize only what you need. Especially with those old homes, they knew how to accommodate people who only lived by necessities so it's perfect for you. Most European kitchens are smaller, and yes, I think they are better than large kitchens. You hoard less stuff, and they are easier to clean. But I'm seeing a trend in the UK towards pulling down walls and creating huge open-plan kitchen-diner-living room areas. I'm old and can see the pitfalls with that - cooking smells everywhere, difficult to keep tidy and clean, and expensive to heat such a large area. I prefer smaller, cosier rooms, but heh ho :)

With bulk spices, if you have to buy in large quantity but don't see yourself using them up in a year, especially with ground spices, Find a friend or neighbor or coworker, someone else who will cut the cost and you can share the spices between you. My friend and I do this quite a lot. We are both low waste sustainables in the area and we just got back from the store and splitting up our haul. She even gave me her recipe for Dill dumplings. Here is the recipe in USA measurements if anyone is interested. Knowledge is free and doesn't weigh a thing. ~ Fluffy Dill Dumplings ~ By my friend Darlene 1 1/2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon parsley flakes 1 Tablespoon dill weed 2/3 cup milk 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 Tablespoons, oil In medium bowl, combine dry ingredients. Add milk, egg & oil. Stir only until ingredients are moistened. Drop by teaspoonful on top of hot chicken soup. Cover tightly; simmer for 12 - 15 minutes or until dumplings are done underneath. Good morning 💕 My daughter in law cleans my house once a week. We use vinegar and water baking soda/lime and sometimes alcohol. We had new windows made that open inward so its sooooooo much easier to keep them clean. I only keep out a small bottle of olive oil, salt pepper, and a covered butter tray. My cookbook holder recipe box and candles ( we loose power often ) I was trained when cooking to pre measure all ingredients first. So dont need everything if front of me all the time. I have a bench in front of the pantry for prep. Then roll it over to the stove/oven It's so windy and dusty here so i refuse open shelving. I do put on the wall my most used cooking cutlery and spices. I cook for 15 most days so i need tons of plates, cups and cutlery! 😏 I save foods in pyrex glass containers. It can store or cook and skip dirtying a pan. I hate the oder of plastic. Well only the floor left to install and I will be moving to the castle ! Squeeeeeeeee!

Cleaning around things works for everyday cleaning and in-between deep cleans - my mother always said "a lick and a promise" in reference to light cleaning when I was growing up. I asked her once what she meant by that, and she commented that it was a promise to return at another time to clean more thoroughly - if one let the mess and grime build up, it becomes a self-fulfilling obstacle in that the mess after a while seems overwhelming and one would just not bother for much longer than one should. If only I had listened to my mother more when I was younger...

One of my favorite parts of your videos is when you show the little birds. I’ve grown up watching birds and appreciating them and learning their names and songs. When you see the same birds everyday, throughout your life, it’s easy to forget that there are others you’ve never seen before; ones that you don’t know the names of. When I see your little birds, I always go, wow what is that? Oh my, how pretty! Little, little bird that I’ve never seen before! You’ve probably seen them your whole life and it’s nothing new, but I really love seeing them, as they are not a species where I live. ❤️

I use a rainbow vacuum cleaner that uses no bags. The dirt all goes into a water reservoir, which I strain out after use. I use Norwex microfiber cleaning clothes that require no cleaning supplies. There are clothes for specific tasks, such as wet wiping things down, dusting, mopping, and polishing glass and mirrors and chrome. It saves a lot of money since they can be used over and over again. Embedded within is colloidal silver which keeps the cloth from building up bacteria and smells. Best to clean them in the washer with biodegradable laundry soap and no fabric softener.

I love every video you release, even if it's about cleaning! Before I used to hate cleaning but now I see it as the way to keep our house nice to live in. I lived with my son in a very tiny house in mom's backyard... two houses in the same terrain. Then she bought a bigger house 5 years ago, 2015, its a 4 bedroom house. My bedroom is the attic and it used to be the only place I like because I decorated on my own, mom seldom went upstairs and didn't like my "hippie" style. I'm a crafter, artesana means crafter or someone who makes handscrafts and taller is workshop, mom didn't like this, she was really snob and old fashion for decorating (and her ideas too, XD). I could'n cook either cause she was at all times in the kitchen and claimed she made it much better... I never had the chance to have my own place again... so I was usually making my knitting, weaving and crafts upstairs in the attic. Last year mom got dementia during the pandemia and our local public health center was on strike. It was hard for me, but little by little i got the chance to make decisions and change some things in our house. I've had long tried to convince mom to recycle, she threw everything togheter to the garbage, so I changed that as soon as I could and separate things for our recycling local center. Mom died in nov. 30 but before I got to declutter the kitchen and reorganize it, since I was cooking for her and the family. Now I reorganizing and decluttering all the ground floor, cause she hoarded plastic bags, cardboard, newspapers, old bills and medicines (I even found crackers, cookies and chocolates from many years ago which I had to throw away!). We're keeping the furniture in the same places but had made some small changes little by little... now I feel I have a home and not simply a house. Maybe that's why I hated cleaning, wiping and organizing before... I didn't feel it as something good to keep my place nice to live. Now I do.

I started being low waste and simple living about 3 years ago, but mom never picked the idea, my son and me try to recycle as much as we can. We're not zero waste nor minimal but don't hoard things like mom did.

I saw you lined your shelving with paper. When I was growing up, we used old newspaper. Perhaps that led to ink allergies later in life. Living in FL, it was just extra work as cleaning & changing paper would need to be done weekly due to amount of pesky insects that hoped to collect crumbs etc. Since we were newlyweds, we couldn't find good housing at affordable prices which met no a/c or 'tight' structures. At the moment I am living with daughter. She doesn't line her shelves, & deep cleans every 3 to 4 months which is fine with me. When I get into my own kitchen been thinking of using the rubberized mats. They can be washed & returned when deep cleaning. Newspaper is rather rare in this day & age and I will be saving a tree or two.😎 We do what is important after the family has left the nest.😊

I’m interested in your method of painting your cupboards. I put a great amount of effort into mine and they show scratches around the knobs.

Loved this video! Peaceful and relaxing. I don’t always take everything off counters every time I clean but, will give deep clean when needed. Feels good to have things clean and organized.

I just bought a new fridge this New Year and the old fridge will be given to my Brother's worker. I had deep cleaned it (it was a mess) and it felt amazing too even if I was not going to use it. As you said, it's a showing of gratitude toward the fridge and the receiver. Happy New Year to you!

Baking soda and white vinegar are marvellous for general cleaning, plus lemon juice and afew drops of essential oils. I can't use commercial oven cleaners as they make me feel sick, so B. soda is a better option. We have a small kitchen and I prefer it as have to be really organised due to limited storage. Great idea about toaster crumbs for birds. Greetings from New Zealand.

So peaceful to listen to you. 👍 Konmari method of tiding is helpful to keep a house clean for a long time. Especially a small space. I'm now rearranging accordingly and find it so convenient. 💕

Hi Niamh, I loved the video! I just wanted to leave a little comment for you, because I only recently found out that Oatly is partly funded (as of July) by the Blackstone Group, and that their funding also extends to a company directly involved in the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. I'm not commenting it to blame anyone who is buying it or anything like that, I just thought I'd let you know in case you hadn't heard about it, because I didn't find out for ages, and that was my favourite plant milk! You have both done so much already to ensure that your interactions with the environment are respectful and helpful, and there is no way we can entirely avoid brands that are supported by eco-capitalist ideals, particularly when it is so often hidden from the consumer. Either way, I just felt I should let you know. I hope this doesn't come off as rude, it really isn't meant that way. Sending you good wishes for this lockdown, from Dublin!

I loved your kitchen cleaning video! I don't know why it's so soothing and fun to watch someone else clean their kitchen - lol. You did an amazing job and I love your little space. I have triple the amount of cupboards (which I thought I would love), but having a family of 4, they fill up with junk so so easily! I usually tackle cleaning out the cupboards once a year...but, it takes days and days. You definitely inspired me to clean out my refrigerator. I think I'm going to wait until my son leaves for college this summer to do a thorough job because most of the condiments in there are his and take up 1/2 the space - lol. Thank you so much for sharing! :D xoxo

I had a professional oven cleaner in once and he used a double sided blade (like the ones used in old fashioned razors) to take the dirt off the glass without lots of elbow grease! My husband is a painter and decorator and has a similar safer gadget for cleaning paint off window glass. It works a treat! Love my homemade spray - mine uses grapefruit oil for the scent at the moment 😁
