I live near Philadelphia. We call a picture rail a picture rail. Chair rail is something different. Picture rail is about a foot down from the ceiling and pictures are hung from it. A chair rail sits about the height of a chair to keep chairs from scratching the walls.

Same here in Virginia. We call it a picture rail, which is also different from a chair 🪑 rail that protects walls from chair rubs.

I am loving the process and the progress on the fairytale cottage! I’m so glad you’re doing a nice crisp white bathroom. You might want to consider a green grout that will match the skirting board colors. To pronounce the white paint color name correctly, just think of the author W. Somerset, Maugham; remember that the G is silent.

I’m in Australia & my 120 year old ‘California Bungalow’ style timber house we bought in 2020 during Covid Lockdown has high ceilings with daddo rails (chair rails) in all the bedrooms & living room & picture rails in the living room. Timber floor throughout. It’s a beautiful house & I’m very happy here. We lost our previous house in the Bushfires here in 2019. Love watching your renovations.

I am from the South and most old homes have picture rails down from the ceiling or right under the ceiling. When homes had plaster walls, you would not want to hang a picture by hammering into your walls. Hanging from a picture rail offered a variety of picture placement. Very smart thing to do.

We call them picture rails in Canada too but of course we have a British heritage. It's called that because pictures were often hung from the rails. Chair rails of course protect the walls (often plaster) from the backs of chairs put to rest against them or from the marks left by sideboards etc.

We call the picture rail a picture rail in Texas... I love that sage color; same color we used in our bedrooms, with ultra white trim and ceiling. It's very restful. Public area is light gold, and the bathrooms a light yellow to reflect the light. Love it. The brighter tiles will help light the bathroom.

Julie, after all that labor to send that floor clean I truly hope that you left the grain visible. Painting it so dark that is black you won't see the grain. Another thing is that every single speck of anything shows up against black. Doing some warm shade of wood tongue is a much better choice. I've redone floors over and over and over

I have heard the term plate rail were you display plates, cups, saucers but that is just a particular term for what purpose the moulding is being installed for. Also, a plate rail would theoretically be wider. But in your instance it looks like there is a groove on the top suirface to catch the hanger

'Picture rails' in America we call 'picture rails' . My 1925 Craftsman style bungalow in Oakland, California where I lived by the Bay 37 years had 'picture rails'. I loved them for hanging pictures from (so that we didn't bess up the beautiful plaster walls), and other decorative pieces, even an ironing board behind a bedroom door. Very useful, 'picture rails'. I miss them.

Picture rail in America Chair rail is not the same. The purpose of a chair rail is to be on the level with the back of chairs. They protect the walls from being marred by chairs. Picture rails are obviously higher and are for hanging pictures without making nail holes in the wall.

Exactly right. When interior walls were made from plaster (before wall board or dry wall was in use) a nail could create quite a crater or crack in the surface.

We call them the same in the USA: picture rails. My moms from Europe so I’ve realized from your show and just growing up that I have been introduced to a lot of things the rest of those growing up in the US hasn’t (like eating with the fork in the left hand and knife in the right and many other customs you’ve delighted in and discovered in the UK). I mention it because there might be another name they are called here in the US for picture rails but I’m installing in our home and on the west coast it’s picture rails. Rambling comment over!!
