The old Prior had the answer to Jaspers doubts that would have brought him a measure of peace immediately, but he wasn't listening. Somerset Maugham's stories are brilliant.

Yes, my faith in Vishnu comes from Vishnu. Which also happens to be the religion in which I was born in, but this is totally unrelated as it would mean my faith in Vishnu mostly comes from.... my parents.

This is brilliant, and brings this question for which I could never find an answer... Why is faith erected as a quality ? Why is it right and good to believe, without a single proof, to a delirious story ? If I say I'm the incarnation of the entity that created the universe, and that people should have faith in me, it would sound (rightfully) totally stupid. But older, totally stupid stories are just fine... This really questions what happens in the human brain.

and like the many ignorant after... they kneel at the graves of the faithless before. so sayeth.... well me. FOR i can create a god if you need it... just like i can feed the poor or offer them shelter... but the divinity you prescribe... is no more than a man a little more truthful than your earnest belief.
