Using "Word games" to make an argument is just a way to argue without actually presenting a good case.

Belief is knowledge. Faith is believing without knowledge. (Seth Andrews)
@nagranoth_9 күн бұрын
well Seth Andrews was wrong. Belief is not knowledge in the same way an animal is not a cow. Knowledge is a subset of belief. Namely a justified true belief. A belief you can justify accepting as true because of evidence or logic.
@DavidWilson-eu1mv9 күн бұрын
@ That is exactly what is inferred in the statement so no, Seth is 100% correct. Also, there is a possibility that my quote is not verbatim .

"nobody has faith without evidence" Sure, dude, that's exactly how it works- Take your pills now and sleep a little.
@tobias44116 күн бұрын
Exactly. If there were irrefutable proof, it wouldn't be a religious faith. Faith doesn't require evidence; it involves believing without it. If there were irrefutable proof that Christianity was correct and God was real, everyone would be a Christian. In that case, Christians wouldn't have faith because it would simply be a fact.

When I cross the road I don't rely on faith to keep me safe. I have evidence that doing so would be dangerous to me so I check to see if it's safe for me to cross. I don't know how he thinks faith is the same thing since faith claims are by definition not testable or evidentiary.

@nagranoth_9 күн бұрын
well unless you're going to repeat the experiments yourself it sort of is. I mean you have peer review and such, but that's also other people writing down stuff: testimony. It's just that there's so much of it, and it has actual results that are applied every day, and most of it you could test yourself if you wanted, that makes it so a lay person who does not do science themselves can trust it even though technically it is testimony and it could just be the generations spanning worldwide conspiracy that all governments despite being enemies contribute to. The thing is what is more reasonable to believe? That scientists by and large try to give honest testimony based on facts others can check and others actually check it, or such a conspiracy?
@christianblevins187010 күн бұрын
If faith=trust I just lop off the other half of that equation because faith has a lot of ignorant baggage with it and I say Trust=Trust.

@brucewilliams415210 күн бұрын
You can believe anything but it is the strength and weight of evidence that supports that belief, the theist knows that the evidence for any God claim is weak which is why they try to push faith into athiests.
@TheLevantin10 күн бұрын
If faith is the same as trust, but trust has to be built up with evidence, does that mean that no one on this earth has faith in God? doesn't that destroy their entire position? Don't theists have arguments that don't shoot themselves in the foot?
@tobias44116 күн бұрын
They imagine they have evidence for their specific god.
@kitchencarvings462110 күн бұрын
Thanks for the fallacious package deal. One can have trust for rational reasons or irrational ones, and you lump all of these together into a single concept. I trust that my wife can drive a car, take care of sheep, walk, cook, whistle, etc. because I've witnessed her do each with consummate skill. I don't trust that she can perform brain surgery since she hasn't been to medical school.

This is nothing more than an attempt at shame transference. Jeff is embarrassed that he has been duped, so he employs a lazy “both sides” strategy to drag the world down to his level to feel balanced.

I have two different concepts of "trust" and "faith". I do not agree with Jeff's usages. I also find Jeff's arguments to be invalid. Now what? This would be very easy for a "god" to clear up.

The fundamental problem is Christians can’t seem to understand that “Faith” is a majestic based verbiage in their world. When I have “Faith” colloquially in a chair, it’s because of consistency. Meaning… They haven’t given us enough evidence for us to believe in their Faith due to the lack of consistent evidences. I don’t choose to not believe, because I’d be lying to myself. If there was an evidence that could make me believe, it wouldn’t be a choice at that point. I can choose a plethora of other things to not do considering their faith, but NOT believe couldn’t be one of them.
