Extremely appreciable step by MCC!! Few more rules need to be added to restore the balance of the game.. *- any ball above 120kmph should be declared a NO BALL as it makes it difficult to spot the ball. *- any ball that spins more than a feet should be declared a WIDE as well... that deviation is annoying, and against the spirit of the game. *- the fielder should sound two warning calls before making a direct hit... anyone failing to do so should face one match ban for disgracing sportsman spirit. *- Not the bowling captain, but rather the batsman should choose the bowling order... Often 'plans' with specific bowlers targeting specific batsman are devised. Batsman choosing who would bowl will restore the pride and prestige in this gentlemen's game.

Hacker Boy Couldn’t agree more. Watching batsmen having to actually work for their runs rather than be gifted high scores makes for great entertainment. A batting side under the pressure of keeping mistakes to a minimum produces interesting battles and brings the real talents to the top. It more than often produces an amazing game, which is decided by one side either running away with it, or a game that results in a winner with a wicket or two in hand or within a hundred runs. Seeing flat decks produce 600+ plus for both sides for 5 days is what keeps the boards happy but the entertainment factor, which is why we have professional sport, is then of a low standard. Although I’m a bit concerned that 4 day tests are being mooted, as I think it will lead to even less positive results and make bad weather and flat pitches an even greater factor in draws, it might mean that pitches consistently produce fantastic matches, day in, day out.

Yes I know batriarchy is a big issue but I feel this rule is fully just. It is the batsman's responsibility to watch the ball but as the narrator said sometimes it is difficult to follow the ball and the fielders might take advantage of that thus this allows greater fairplay. If it doesn't injure the Batsman I don't see the need to protect Batsmen from something like that which probably won't even cause him to lose Wicket but mostly scare him to may be run faster or dive. Meanwhile ball hits Stokes' bat accidentally while running & goes to the boundary & instead of making it a dead ball the rule allowed for the boundary to be given as over throw when it wasn't really an over throw.

Cricket seems to be trying to get like golf, i.e. more and more rules that are there mostly for the sake of just being there. I once played at respectable club level with two veteran bowlers who, if they ever batted together, used "Yes" and "No" the wrong way round, i.e. shouted an urgent "Yes!" when they had no intention of running and "No!" when they were in fact running a quick single. They garnered quite a few runs over the course of a season as a result of these "fake calls", and even the odd overthrow boundary, to which they weren't really entitled. Perhaps more importantly, we thought (and the opposition usually agreed with us; at least in the bar afterwards they did!) they had a LOT of laughs. Is there a law to prohibit that yet? If not, I bet there will be soon.

While the batsman is running he should be looking at the fielder who is throwing the ball and not the wicket keeper. Hence the keeper's action is irrelevant here. If the ball goes to the keeper and then if he acts as if the ball is not near him then this constitutes an unfair action. Dhoni used to make subtle movements. He used make a move just before the ball reached him. This action, by no means, is an unfair action.

Cricket is becoming more of a batsmen game.. if there is law to prevent fielder from fooling batsmen then there should also be law to prevent batsmen to play switch hits. This also confuses fielding team.

It's a normal part of the game of baseball known as 'deking' (decoying) and accepted by all. You run at your peril. The onus is upon the hitter to keep his eye on the ball. When a bowler doesn't release his delivery and stumps an ambitious batter who left the crease prematurely, how is that aloud then?

Excellent explanation. You can add in a recent fielding event. The NZ vs Eng World Cup final. the fielder threw in the ball to run Stokes out. As Stokes dived for the line the ball hit the bat and went for 4. This left the Umpires with a problem. Neither England batsman was keen to claim the 4, they left it to the umpires to decide all they did was assure the Umpire it was a freak accident. The problem was the ball had hit the rope. That meant that under official rules it was 4 runs - exactly the same as a miss field going for 4 or a contact with the hand holding the ball whilst a body part of the fielder is touching the rope. The England players didn’t try to influence the Umpires, and said they’d accept the decision what ever it was. The NZ team said openly the didn’t know what could be said, if it was an accident, which the replay proved then it was up to the Umpires - so neither team tried to fool or influence the Umpires. Because the ball touched the rope it was a 4, so it was given as a 4. Stokes spend ages apologising for it to the NZ players when it wasn’t his fault. The NZ team accepted it was just a freak. They could have said it was inadvertent, the batsmen didn’t try to take runs whilst the ball was heading to the ropes. It made it down to the Umpires. That is how the game should be played. NZ didn’t enter a complaint. Both teams accepted that it was a total accident. England went on to win, but NZ did miss some chances in the mean time. So all in all it became a fair but lucky 4 runs. This should be the approach. If “fake fielding” is done to stop a run it should be called out. Just as a bowler deliberately running in aiming to mankad the the batsman without giving a “warning” to the batsman, because he should be looking to bowl to the other end. And if the batsman and bowler collide by accident no action should be taken but no run out wicket etc should be claimed either. Deliberately interfering with the batsman run is a different rule as is running on the pitch etc.

This is so dumb. This pretty much must be the only stupid sport in the entire world where you can't "fake" something. I can't think of 1 sport literally where faking out your opponent would not be considered a genius/great move. For e.g. every single play in the NFL is designed to confuse the opponent (even extra points are sometimes faked). That goes for both the offensive calls and the defensive calls. I suppose it is deemed under the rules as cheating. What if the ball went over the boundary but fielder played it as if it didn't and batsman was run out - or a fielder successfully claimed a catch that he knew wasn't- is that the same thing? A degree of honesty is expected if the game is to maintained at a professional standard.

Alan Hayward Your first scenario sounds like the Ian Bell dismissal vs India. The umpires, who had signalled, and batsmen assumed the ball had crossed the boundary rope and went off for the lunch break. The fielder assumed the same but Dhoni knew the ball was still within the boundary and wanted it thrown back in and ran Bell out. Would that be liable for 5 penalty runs under today’s laws? I mean technically it was a deception as the fielding side were not honest and the umpires had, I believe, called for lunch.

With regards Bairstow and Sangakkara, it should most definitely be considered as falling under the rule as the extra effort to make the ground takes a toll on the batsman, and thus an advantage IS gained by the fielding side. They wouldn't be doing it otherwise. I think that the ruling will be extended in the near future, because I can't see incidents like Bairstow's going without complaint.

I've always thought the moment a player changes from right hand to left hand (and vice versa), whether by grip or stance before the ball is released, it should be a dead ball or penalty to the opposition.....it should be the same as a bowler not telling an umpire he is changing to around the wicket.... If you can reverse sweep without a grip or stance change then that's ok, it's just another shot...

Just watched it for the first time now. SA claimed afterwards that he was pointing for someone to back the throw up but that looks like complete rubbish. If that was the case he’d have been pointing behind him and not at the bowlers end. Anyway, glad that this wasn’t in a critical World Cup match.

Well field deceiving should be allowed in case of misfields,so that the batsman feels tricked,he could be aware of where he had hit the ball,but the keeper's case is unfair as batsman wont be having an idea of where the ball is then!

Yes but if a batsman injures himself by diving, then it has given the fielding side an advantage. Or the batsman could tweek a hamstring trying to sprint for no reason, not to mention the unnecessary physical exertion.

All the rules are made in batsman favor. Even leg byes are given as runs even though ball has not touched the bat. Two new balls...making it easy for batting, preventing reverse swing during death overs and also difficult for finger spinners to spin the ball
