Welcome to the summer intensive #stagecombat course with the Academy of Performance Combat in sunny Sandwich, Kent! Because I had such a fantastic time last year at Basic that I did three more two-day courses at Intermediate and then came back this summer again for the Advanced course.
Five weapons. One week. No mercy. Lots of nunchucks to the face.
IN THIS EPISODE: 18th Century Smallsword, Nunchucks, Double Escrima vs. Sai, Found Weapons, and 2vs1 Unarmed stage combat.
ALSO IN THIS EPISODE: More fun than you can shake a stick at.

The feeling of being in a safe community and not wanting to go home and being completely knackered afterwards is very relatable to me- it sounds just like going to Discworld conventions. Especially the Irish Convention, where I'm an assistant in the combat workshops: after two or three longsword/dagger/unarmed combat workshops a day and about four hours' sleep a night for four days running, the feeling is mostly "I want to keep doing this forever, so long as I can fit in an eighteen-hour nap somewhere".

@@JillBearup I forgot...but I have at last remembered long enough to track down this video. Fencing was really fun and sweaty. Like I played sports in school, but something about sweat dripping down your nose and not having time to wipe it away because Fight, made it way more noticeable. I also discovered that fencing seems to be a small person sport. Me being taller than the average girl had trouble fitting equipment. Overall though, it reminded me of dancing except it was a direct competition which isn't something I thought I wanted, but super cool to experience.

Great video, Jill 😀 I did a week intensive course back in 2012, doing unarmed, rapier and rapier/main gauche - definitely the hardest (physically) week I have ever spent, especially as the oldest person in the class by 20 years... Also the most fun class I have ever done - stage combat is AWESOME fun! Your video brought back some great memories, for which I thank you. Coming to it from a martial arts background made it a curious mix of learning cool new techniques and weapons, and fighting existing muscle memory to *not* hit your partner or throw them through the floor 🤨 Since then I have created and performed fights for (counts on fingers) 14 shows, including Romeo and Juliet, Lear and the Scottish play (I love Shakespeare’s stage directions: “They fight” 😂 )- every single one was an absolute blast to do, and perhaps the most fun it is possible to have with your clothes on.

I can relate to the "everything aches" part a lot. Some years ago at Summer i participated in a one-weeklong Kali Seminare, (with participants from a lot of Otter european countries). Even as a FMA practitioner (with at least 3 training sessions weekly) i was tired and exhausted every evening, and felt years older at the weekend. Still a great experience.. but directly after i felt as if i need a holiday.

7:04 same as in martial arts/combat sports. Did judo for some years and in training it was mixed, albeit in male dominant groups. Some of the younger folks and new ones were hesitant to fight mixed (especially in kids classes), but it got pretty normal for me at least. I can understand, cause there are some techniques, especially holding the partner on the ground, where you come really close, like kuzure-tate-shiho-gatame.

I know the feeling! A few years ago I did a week long taekwondo intensive in the mountains. It was lovely. We spent a few afternoons in a padded gym doing takedowns for hours at a time, I went through so many tee shirts per day cause I was sweating so much, and we also had a massage day halfway through the week and it hurt so good. I almost won a kima bo contest, which is where you get in a wide, low squat and see how long you can hold it with your staff balanced across your knees. But more than anything I loved the camaraderie one can build with people you spend a week eating, talking, and training to main and/or kill each other with. Good times I remember with fondness.

We did bear pits. Winner of each bout takes on the next comer. After a couple of bouts, back to back even the best fighters start getting tired. Polearm served me well. I had just spent 2 weeks fighting every day (Pennsic War) and came back on fire. Quarterstaff moves work just fine with a 6 foot glaive. Won 6 straight fights until I got my thumb dislocated. My gauntlets had not survived Pennsic (they were in pieces) and I was fighting in hockey gloves. Not a smart move.

How do you feel about conversations during fencing? If it was a real fight, no masks, no protective gear, foils, sabers, 18th century smallswords, or whatever other relatively light sword, could you fight and have a conversation without lots of grunting and huffing between phrases? Does that sort of thing make more sense when you pause to engage in the mind games to wreck their confidence before you stab them somewhere important? Is that just a great opportunity for your opponent to stab you when you're paying less attention to your defense because you're trying to say something vaguely intelligible? Does that start to become a viable option when you are vastly more skilled than your opponent?

Your shoulders hurt after the nunchucks, because you were swinging them as if they were clubs. Take a look at Bruce Lee doing them, and you'll see the action of the nunchuck is in the wrist - short, flinging, flicks of motion only AIDED by the rest of the arm. Also, choke up on them ever so slightly (leaving about 2 inches sticking out the end of the bottom of your fist) and feel the fore-end swinging on its tether, as it responds to where you are pointing the grasped end, you're more likely to be aware of exactly where it is, even in its quick arcs, being able to have greater control/precision over where it goes. (...and you are much less likely to hit yourself with them.)
