That "wrong" picking at the beginning actually sounds very warm and smooth!!!! A lot better than a lot who do pick "right" but don't sound nearly as good.

Honestly, I don’t like the tone of most of the guys claiming to do it the right way. Matter of taste.

Using "wrong" technique and "wrong" instruments can make music more exciting and alive and less robotic. When watching great gypsy jazz (or classical) players, I often wondered why they used those thin sounding guitars 😀 This was an improvement, your guitar sounds great.

Truth be told all selmer style guitars sound like crap. They are crunchy , they buzz , they don't find they bark. Lol. I know that's the sound. I grew up playing this style. We never called it gypsy jazz we were just playing our guitars. I prefer arch top guitars. They are fat , warm , every note rings , they sound sweet as well. Birelli ,stochelo and all the great gypsy jazz players can make any guitar sound great. I own a DuPont But I prefer my arch top.

I have friends who play western style with gypsy guitars and they great players but the technique is wrong and they don’t get “the sound “, it matters. Before I began to educate myself and study I didn’t know the difference, I do now. Great lesson Denis!

Denis does the Gypsy Jazz Picking book have audio examples? I realise its aimed at guitarists but the licks and etudes could be useful for those like myself who play other instruments.

it does, but to be honest, i am not sure if all the phrases will translate well to other instruments unless you make little modifications here and there. The phrases are super idiomatic for Gypsy Jazz guitar and take advantage of the “traditional” technique

i used to be a sushi chef in london and japanese people are quite resentful that some western can be as good as them. i had a head chef saito he said he would rather hire western sushi chefs as japanese are too full of themselves

The single best thing for me was just being there and forcing myself to just start speaking the language in very controlled environments. I started with the convenience store and fast food restaurants. As I gained confidence, I started trying more and more difficult environments (making appointments, signing up to the gym, sending stuff at the post office, etc…). I continuously forced myself into various situations where I would have to practice specific grammar points and vocabulary.

Oh and also having lots of Japanese friends who can’t speak English helps a lot too!

@@DenisChangMusic I learnt Vietnamese to a C1 level over 5 years... I think we have the same approach there. The best way to improve is to get a job live interpreting. That will turbocharge your abilities ;) Next level sink or swim (or in GJ context... sink or swing!)
