I was a brown belt when my coach passed away unexpectedly. We were due to goto a seminar a few weeks after his passing. So i went alone. Mainly hoping to talk to others coaches for advice on what i should be doing now. I was given my black belt at the seminar, unaware my coach had set it up before he passed. I was then left to be the coach at our small club. And i have been struggling ever since. Being a black belt has been a curse as it has put so much preassure in me to run our club. So i havent had any time to enjoy just being a black belt.

I like to think that this is way more difficult to get away with in BJJ than most other systems for the reason that we still place a relatively high standard on BBs and on lineage.

3 strip 44yr old purple belt here. Just got more serious about BJJ a few yrs ago. I try and develop my game the best that my understanding and body will allow. The belt will come when it comes. I feel the best I can do is only share/ teach what I know and nothing beyond that. Should I keep moving towards a black belt even though as my body breaks down I will not be as good against younger more athletic folks?

Not at all. Thats why Carlos shared there are 3 variables they consider. In the full interview he shares more on his view of competitors vs hobbiest. Currently, Carlos is a competitor so most of this segment was from that view point! Congrats on all you've accomplished my friend, and I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video.

You are getting old but if you want your body to hold a bit longer do your research on peptides like BPC-157, TB-500 combined with sports TRT plus low dose of HGH and compounds like cardarine for instance. This should rewind your clock back to feeling 30 in no time and can be done safely.

Everybody has their own reasons for training. Not everyone has plans to be a “pro” competitor, it doesn’t mean though that they can’t be competitive in the local scene and still deserve the belt they’ve been awarded. I’m 9 years in right now, one stripe brown belt, and I have enough time to compete in a few comps a year. My instructor believes I’m competent to hold the rank I have, and I can hold my own against black belts and other brown belts pretty well, so ultimately it’s their decision when the right time is for advancement. The only time I think it’s not deserved is if they’re fast tracking based only on attendance, but they’re not actually capable of executing techniques they technically should be at whatever rank they’re at. Lots of variables, lol. I do agree on the point of the black belt promo photo being absolutely important, instructor has to be in the pic unless they’re out of state or the country. That’s the biggest promotion you’ll get, and I for one want proof that it was given to me by my instructor. Videos, pics, etc.

I totally agree when it comes to the differences between the two mindsets. I'm a blue belt, and (for myself) I refuse to wear a black gi. To me, the color black symbolizes proficiency, expertise and experience. A black gi goes with a black belt, and I haven't earned the right to wear that color during practice yet. Though I fully acknowledge the most important part is the belt, I still feel like a fraud by wearing anything black, period. I wear a white or blue gi because that's where I'm at in my own journey. I've studied five different styles over 33 years and have gotten two black belts from that bunch (I'm working on two more right now) so I understand the importance of the color. Obviously that's just for me. I don't judge anyone else who chooses to wear it. Maybe I'm weird, who knows...

Am I underthinking it, or does being a black belt in simple terms just mean you've been training consistently for at least 10 years? Not including for prior grappling experience and gym politics such as moving around a lot. I just feel if you're on the mats in one spot for around 10 years, you're going to get there whether you're a competitor or not.
@thepracticaldad2 ай бұрын
The way my coach explained it was, based on your age, weight, gender and belt, you should be able to go anywhere in the world and be competitive with people the same age, weight, gender and belt as you. Training time wasn't something he gave much consideration.
@CombatCreativeCoАй бұрын
I think you're correct. The skills and knowledge need to be there. I cant imagine training consistently for 10 years and you not have enough skills or knowledge.

Doesnt having a belt system provide the context for identifying fake bb's? Like anyone can train for a while at Renzos or Atos or whatever but they cant just claim theyre a Renzo or Galvao bb if Renzo or Galvao didnt actually belt them?

I disagree on a few of these points. it should be based on how good you are period. nothing else
@raphiey3 ай бұрын
but if your first reaction on getting submitted is to punch the wall and curse, you're still too immature to get a higher ranked belt. you represent the sport and other bjj practitioners too, and if you don't have your emotions under control everytime you lose you're mentally not where you should be. and also let's say youre good or even really good, but you're always going really hard and aggressive on people, no matter what, older people, women, beginners, injured people, then yeah, maybe you have a decent skill set and know how to perform the techniques, but you have no control over yourself. and there are also other reasons why simply being good at it shouldnt be enough. it should be an important aspect of course, but not the only one.
@CombatCreativeCo2 ай бұрын
Fair point. I will say the more I interview professors they all base it off skill according to the students goals. Competitor vs a Hobbyist. That seems to be the most common.
